History of Wrestling in Lubbock - Introduction

Thanks to a ton of material I recently received from our very own "Perfect 10" Baby Doll, I'm going to try to piece together a partial history of wrestling in Lubbock, Texas.
 
Nickla Roberts' dad, Nick Roberts, promoted Wednesday night cards in her hometown of Lubbock for many, many years. Talent was shared amongst several promoter's towns, the biggest of which were Amarillo, San Antonio and even Dallas.  
 
Much like the Gene Anderson and George Scott journals you may have seen on the Mid-Atlantic Gateway website, Nick Roberts kept a very detailed journal of not only his weekly Wednesday night shows, but also the TV show from the preceding Saturday. The journals are VERY detailed and I hope someday this info can be included in a book. You won't believe how much history is contained in his pocket-size journals.
 
Thanks very much to "Baby Doll" for sharing these with me and with all of us here on the forum.
 
In what will be a regular weekly feature here on the forum, we're going to relive the year 1967 in Lubbock wrestling. Each Wednesday, we'll take another date from Mr. Roberts' 1967 journal and decipher it as best we can. I hope you guys enjoy this. To me, it's incredibly fascinating.

This sounds fantastic Greg! I for one cannot wait! We all here love the history of wrestling or we wouldn't be here and this special feature each week will no doubt help us relive some of those memories. Thanks to you for doing this and thanks go out to Baby Doll for sharing!

Having grown up and living in Lubbock for  the first 29 years of m,y life, and going to Mr. Roberts matches from a very early age, My first conscious memory  is of a Ricky Romero-Cyclone negro matchat the Fairpark Coliseum. I think I was about 3-31/2. So I think this will mean the most to me. Here we are starting 4 years before I wan born . This is going to be incredible.
I've aleady learned that I lived just a little over 2 miles from one of my most favorite women to ever step inside the wrestling ring. That's before we even get going with the history lesson.

  I couldn't help but cry when I saw what my friend had done with my Dad's books.  I have had them with me since he died 5 years ago.  I looked through them so many times since I was a little girl. In some of the books you will be able to see my writing.  There were a very few times that my Dad let me circle who went over in the matches and even write down the following weeks lineup. It is so awesome that you guys will be able to witness the detail my Dad took when it came to the business.  Now my Dad's work will be appreciated and live on forever.
   I cannot not possibly begin to thank GP for doing this for me  really for all of us.  I knew he would mark out over the info but had no idea he would do all of this.  GP, thank you fromthe botton of my heart for everything.  This is so great you would take time to do all of this for us.  
   I was so priveleged to have had the childhood I did.  My Dad was my hero and still is.  Words cannot describe what it was like as a little girl to see my Dad every week on TV.  To get to go to the matches when it wasn't a school night.
I love the business and know I am such a big mark.  
   If you guys have any questions about my Dad's info, please do not hesitate to ask....thanks so much..you have no idea what all of this means..Nickla

I want to thank you for sharing this history with us.The sixties is my favorite
time in wrestling history. I especially loved the tv shows that were either
taped or broadcast live from the studios.
 
Do you have any photos from your Dad's tv shows that you could share
with us?

I wish I did..wish there were tapes from that time too but the tapes were bicycled.  Which meant the tapes were recorded over week to week and sent out by bus to the various towns. Plus this was way before the time of home VCRs.
I remember when the VCR first came out on the market. They were huge machines and cost between 700 and 1000 dollars..YIKES.
My Dad did have the middle office lined with old photos.  I wish I had them but my Mom sold three boxes full of them for about a total of $5 at one of her garage sales.  My Dad was livid.
Not as mad as my brother though.  She sold one of his really old glass soda bottles for a nickle.  He had had it appraised for over $300 and that was in poor condition.  His was in perfect condition with the cap intact.  Still to this day I don't think that he has forgiven or forgotten about that.  Plus this was over 25 years ago so you could just imagine what it would possilbly be worth today.

Bobby Eaton/Corny and myself had the pleasure of working for Nick Roberts.We used to wrestle in Amarillo and Lubbock area.We would do a show in Amarillo in the afternoon then do a night show in Lubbock.Sometimes we would work a night show in Lubbock and then the next night in Amarillo.Anyway these were the 2 towns we worked in this area.We enjoyed working for the Roberts family,they deserve all the credit for making that area known for wrestling.I am enjoying hearing the memories of this area.

This is solid gold to me.  This was the era that I first started watching wrestling and this was the territory that I lived in (Clovis).  Some of the greatest memories of my life.  I wish that I could go back to those great years when I was a young total mark.  I've had the priviledge of meeting and knowing a number of people from the business.  I've seen matches from differant era and areas in later years.  Even made my own pro wrestling debut at age 53.  But, still, when I think about wrestling I think back to what we had back there in the 60s.  Greg, I can't wait for each installment..this will be a fun nostalgic ride for me.

Oh!!! Those guys.  Yeah, I know 'em casually.  Last time I saw that Akbar character, he shoved me and well, I shoved him back.  Kox?  Well, I think I've met that guy, too.  That's all I'm gonna say, wouldn't want people to think I was namedroppin'.   Wink
