Lubbock - January 4, 1967
Jan 17th, 2007, 11:54pm

This is from Nick Roberts' 1967 journal. The page on the left is for the matches on the TV show the preceding Saturday (December 31, 1966) and the page on the right is for the Lubbock house show card the following Wednesday night, January 4, 1967...

From the journal, we can see...

December 31, 1966 TV matches (I believe airing from 4-5 p.m.) included Dory Funk Jr. beating Wild Man Weeks (sp?), Dick Steinborn beating Alex Perez, Professor Tanaka beating Jerry London, and Dan Miller going to a draw with Batman.

The January 4, 1967 Lubbock card drew 1318 people, headlined by an NWA World title match with champion Gene Kiniski defeating Dory Funk, Jr. The North American title match between Dick Steinborn and Wahoo McDaniel was stopped due to blood. Lou Thesz and Dan Miller wrestled to a time limit draw. Terry Funk and Bobby Duncum defeated Professor Tanaka and Alex Perez. And Silento Rodriguez beat Jack Cain in the opener. Referee was Len Miller.

You can see the dollar figures noted next to each wrestler denoting their pay for the evening. (The world champ made $142 this night.) Near the bottom, you'll also see amounts listed for transportation costs for Thesz and Kiniski, and also a $48 fee paid to the NWA for using the champion.

The $756 figure noted in the top right corner is the total amount paid the wrestlers plus the $48 NWA fee.

Just wondering were Thesz & Kiniski on any other cards over the next few days or came in special for this show. I would assume that they were traveling together, not much reason to bring in the former champion on the same card as the present champion if they weren't wrestling each other.

I will have to defer to Baby Doll and others as far as the exact weekly schedule for the territory but, like other territories, I'd bet Thesz and Kiniski made the "loop" for a number of days instead of just doing the one show in Lubbock.

Unfortunately, Mr. Roberts' journal only details the Wednesday night Lubbock cards and the TV shows from the previous Saturdays. Although he did wrestle at other shows in the territory, I guess since he only promoted Lubbock and a few spot shows here and there, he only kept detailed records for the shows he actually promoted.

Maybe there are some other folks out there that can help shed light on this era and area.

Well, the poster in the other thread said that there were matches in Amarillo on Thursday, so I would assume that was pretty standard. As far as the rest of the week I'm not sure.
I thoufght it was interesting that the travel expenses for HTesz and Kiniski were differnt. Tha t would lead me to believe that the Lubbock card was the first nght of their trip through the terriory. Then agian this is all conjecture and speculation.

Its a lot of fun dissecting this.

Some numbers that I was wondering about . . .

"TV 170.00" ? And again, "T.V. 14.00". I also noticed a "Funk 34.00"--- I can only assume that was some sort of kickback to Dory Funk Sr, as the NWA promoter of record?
