Andersons vs. Ivan & Nikita Koloff
Jan 19th, 2007, 5:15pm

I was surprised to find this photo in a 1985 wrestling magazine. It is Gene Anderson with Nikita Koloff in the ring; Ivan Koloff is visible in the background on the apron.

I never knew these two teams wrestled each other, and it must have been a "one off" type thing at the time, because Gene was basically retired by the time Nikita Koloff broke in with Jim Crockett Promotions in 1984.

However, Gene came back for a few matches with Ole in Georgia in June of 1984, which is right around the time Nikita got started.  This was right before Vince took the TBS TV time slots. During these last days of "Georgia Championship Wrestling", Crockett promotions was helping Ole out considerably, sending talent to the TV and bigger house shows, as well as helping out with TV production. One of Ole's last programs before Vince took over was a match at the Omni against his old nemesis the Assassin (Jody Hamilton) managed by Paul Jones. Jones and Hamilton were Crockett guys at that point. At the end of the match, Paul and the Assassin were double teaming Ole and out of nowhere Gene Anderson ran in for the save, which got a great pop from the Atlanta crowd because the Andersons had been such a fixture there for so many years, and Gene was retired and wasn't appearing on this show so it was a big surprise. This set up a match between the Andersons and the Assassins with Paul Jones (or perhaps Jones and only Assassin #1, I can't remember exactly).

So Gene was back for a very brief period of time, and I have to believe this photo was taken during that time, likely during June of 1984.

Does anyone have Crockett results from Greensboro or Charlotte, or from Atlanta during that time period and can find a match between the Andersons and the Koloffs? It's also possible Gene could have been teamed with someone else in this photo besides Ole. But Gene couldn't have wrestled more than a handful of matches during that brief comeback.

Any help will be appreciated!

wudn't greensboro. i wish it were.
as far as charlotte goes..it wudn't 10/7(us title tournament), 10/21, or 12/25. those were the only shows i was at in charlotte during 1984.

nikita debuted on 6/6/84 in raleigh. i recall seeing CWG once in the fall of '84 when the koloffs were talking about going to georgia (with kruschev, i believe, not sure).

my bet would be georgia, and as far as the date goes all my records show ivan koloff in singles or teamed with don kernodle up until they lost the belts on 10/21/84. after that, i see the koloffs as more of a team. but that is just the results of shows i attended live.

Thank you CWH! I am amazed Gene was still working shots then, and have no memory of that show although it would have been being plugged on "Championship Wrestling from Georgia", Ole's Saturday AM show.

I believe that show must have been the last Ole Anderson show at the Omni before the Crocketts took over the TBS programming the last weekend in March.

Gene worked several matches with Ole during the first 3 months of 1985.
The last two results for Gene that I have seen were six man tags he did
with Ole on April 5 in Lansing ,MI and Wheeling,WV.

I was really hoping that there would be at least one where Gene,Ole and
Arn teamed but no luck.

That is so wild. Thanks for sharing.

CWH, you make a good point, considering, what, didn't Ole and Arn win the National tag titles in Charlotte in April 1985? So there's not much of a lapse there.

Yeah.Actually before Gene wrestled with Ole the last time there is a result
with Arn teaming with Ivan and Krusher (Gene and Ole were not involved in
that match). So Arn was already in but a six man tag with Gene and Ole has
not been found (yet anyway, but still hoping).

What the hell? Why would a match between two white boys have the loser be painted white?

With all due respect to the Koloffs....Ivan & Nikita can say they wrestled the GREATEST tag-team ever!!!!!!!!!!  Gene & Ole rule!!!  Man...I would have loved to have seen Khrushchev/Koloffs vs Gene/Ole/Arn!!!!!!!!  What a match!!!
