I was surprised to find this photo in a 1985 wrestling magazine. It is Gene Anderson with Nikita Koloff in the ring; Ivan Koloff is visible in the background on the apron.
I never knew these two teams wrestled each other, and it must have been a "one off" type thing at the time, because Gene was basically retired by the time Nikita Koloff broke in with Jim Crockett Promotions in 1984.
However, Gene came back for a few matches with Ole in Georgia in June of 1984, which is right around the time Nikita got started. This was right before Vince took the TBS TV time slots. During these last days of "Georgia Championship Wrestling", Crockett promotions was helping Ole out considerably, sending talent to the TV and bigger house shows, as well as helping out with TV production. One of Ole's last programs before Vince took over was a match at the Omni against his old nemesis the Assassin (Jody Hamilton) managed by Paul Jones. Jones and Hamilton were Crockett guys at that point. At the end of the match, Paul and the Assassin were double teaming Ole and out of nowhere Gene Anderson ran in for the save, which got a great pop from the Atlanta crowd because the Andersons had been such a fixture there for so many years, and Gene was retired and wasn't appearing on this show so it was a big surprise. This set up a match between the Andersons and the Assassins with Paul Jones (or perhaps Jones and only Assassin #1, I can't remember exactly).
So Gene was back for a very brief period of time, and I have to believe this photo was taken during that time, likely during June of 1984.
Does anyone have Crockett results from Greensboro or Charlotte, or from Atlanta during that time period and can find a match between the Andersons and the Koloffs? It's also possible Gene could have been teamed with someone else in this photo besides Ole. But Gene couldn't have wrestled more than a handful of matches during that brief comeback.
Any help will be appreciated!
