The Varsity Club

All this talk of great wrestling stables and groups No one has mentioned Kevin Sullivans' "Varsity Club" What a great bunch of talent there

1st I've always believed Sullivan was 1 of t he greatest "ring psychologists" the business has ever known and with this group he really shined through Mike Rotunda and Rick Steiner were a great team and Rotunda was an excellent Single's wrestler as well But Rotunda and Dr. Death Steve Williams even greater I didn't care for Danny Spivey

But What did you think of this group I think they should've had an angle with the Horsemen

The Varsity Club was a good stable. Not on the same level as the Four Horsemen, but still a really good stable.  The thing I always liked was they were believable in that gimmick.  As someone earlier pointed out, they all were college graduates and the fact that they all wore their college jackets to the ring seemed to help add to that persona.  It was easily identifiable that Steiner went to Michigan, ROtunda to Syracuse, Dr. Death to Oklahoma.  I thought Rotunda was a great World TV Champion.  The only thing that was missing from the stable really was a main event caliber wrestler.  Perhaps, if they had had Lex Luger join the stable it would've put them over as more of a major factor in NWA.  Luger played college football at Penn St. for Joe Paterno, so he could've made the transition in the Varsity Club.

I agree w/Garvinstomp. While the VC were a great stbale, not on the same level as the Horsemen, or MX or RnR. Just dont think they had the same ring psychology as those other teams. I also think Spivey was a heckuva member too, and doesnt get enough credit for being a big guy who can move. Spivey/Rotundo, and Steiner, IMO, were the best of the VC. Dr Death, while good, wasn't the same I felt once he was in the group.

Lack of ring psychology and chemistry as an overall team is the downfall.   The only link they really had was college backgrounds, and that Sullivan was thier leader.   Other than that, it was just a group of good individuals.   But they certainly had skills to make what they had work, and produced some good business.

Rotundo had only 2 very good partners to ever team with and that was Barry Windham and the other was Ted DiBiase. Not taking anything away from Sullivan or Williams or Steiner. Rick and Scott were a better team as was Williams with Gordy or DiBiase. They were all also great single performers and I think that is what the whole idea of the Varsity Club was about in the beginning. Rotundo and Williams were an okay team but not a great stand out team. Spivey was not there long enough to even be really remembered.

The Varsity Club vs. The Horsemen...interesting but the main match to see out of that would have been Flair vs. Rotundo, Rotundo vs. Tully, or Steiner or Sullivan vs. Arn maybe, Williams vs. Windham were also some decent matches. It could have worked in some aspects but not been a huge draw around the territory as opposed to the others the Horsemen had programs with at the time.

the gimmick was great. This is one of the best ideas Dusty (or perhaps Sullivan?) came up with. Mike Rotundo was going to go nowhere in JCP after the Florida buy, with his colorless persona. I thought the Varsity gimmick brought out the best in him. It was also the first time that Rick Steiner started to get a lot of attention from the masses. Doc fit in well. I always saw Sullivan as a weak link...should've been the manager, or just the fall guy for tag bouts.

I loved the Varsity Club stable.  I am a big fan of "super" stables anyway.  I liked the fact that any of the stablemates can/did team with each other if need be.

Varsity Club was a terrific use of talent--getting the guys over based on their work as collegiate wresters.  Quite a bunch of talent with Sullivan as the main spokesman.  IMO, they did not have the run together they could have as a complete group.  I suppose the limiting factor on the group was the same reason why they matched so well--while they all had very different looks, they all were based in the same character (collegiate wrestler--complete w/singlets).

IMO, the Army of Darkness was a better threat to faces out of CWF (sorry if I am posting this OT).  This other Sullivan group even featured the "Karate Man" Billy Graham for a time.

Thought the VC were great, but IMO, it would probably not have worked, with both of them being heels,  the Horsemen were cheered greatly, but had to become more dastardly every week to generate good heat.  But I do agree with the earlier post where as Luger would have been a perfect fit (or better than Horsemen) for the VC.  Didn't like Spivey in that role though, he was becoming more immoblile very quickly in his career. The VC was a good idea, but they had no one to feud with.  No natural match-ups.  The concept would have worked better if there were Brisco, Funk Jr., Gagne, Hodge type wrestlers to oppose them.  Unfortunately, that was not the direction the company was going, so the VC kinda stagnated.

There were always rumors that Ron Simmons was going to join up with this group, but it never seemed to get beyond that. His FSU credentials made him a natural fit for the group. Of course, it wasn't long before he was teamed up with Butch Reed, and that worked out well for both of them.

They were a good stable, unfortunately much shorter lived than the Horsemen, R&R, MX, etc...

Mike Rotunda and Rick Steiner were good, especially Mike who played the role well...  Spivey was good, but didn't fit in well...  Also, Steve Williams was more of a singles wrestler...

They had the gang mentality, but in the days of the 80's, it didn't seem like the "in thing" to put heel vs. heel...  Although, the NWA and WCW did it, and honestly it did work out well for them, it was a reason I watched them...

Rotunda has a backstage job with WWE as a road agent (or "producer" as they are calling them now)  He recently had a brief appearance on Raw as IRS.

And yes, he was somewhat briefly in the nWo.

You don't think the Varsity Club vs The Road Warriors was a good feud.  I love the way that Dr. Death would tie Hawk and Animal up who were known to bully a guy in the ring.
