Lubbock - January 25, 1967

This is from Nick Roberts' 1967 journal. The page on the left is for the matches on the TV show the preceding Saturday (January 21) and the page on the right is for the Lubbock house show card at the Fair Park Coliseum the following Wednesday night, January 25, 1967...

From the journal, we can see...

January 21, 1967 The TV show (I believe airing at 4:15 p.m.) was a re-run of the December 12, 1966 televison., or maybe just a portion of it.

The January 25, 1967 Lubbock card drew the largest gate of the new year (2350 people,) no doubt based on the previous weeks' buildup to tonight's main event where Dan Miller finally got the best of Professor Tanaka. In other matches, Dory Funk Sr. lost to Dick Steinborn, Silento Rodriguez and Pat O'Connor beat Brute Bernard and Art Nelson, and Bobby Duncum and Terry Funk wrestled to a draw in the opener.

You can see the dollar figures noted next to each wrestler denoting their pay for the evening; significant increases over the month's previous shows. (Tanaka and Miller each made $160 in the main event this night.)

The $1151 figure noted in the top right corner is the total amount paid the wrestlers, referee plus the TV costs and $70 paid to "Jack." Again, not quite sure who "Jack" is at this point.

Jack Cain?   Dory Srs brother in law.  IIRC, he was a stooge kinda like Herman Gust (Srs brother).

I think you might be right on that, port. I've seen his name listed in other places in Mr. Roberts' journals. I had wondered that myself but wasn't familiar enough to say.

Can you or anyone tell us more about the brother and brother-in-law?

The Jack Cain stuff is mostly from Terry Funks book.  Theres a thread talking about it on KM.  Terry also claims that Jack Cain was a (stepfather?) to Billy Bob Thorton.  He was married to Funk Srs sister.  Herman Gust was a Funk. (legit brother to Funk Sr) and was a stooge for the Amarillo office.  He used Gust as a last name because they didnt want the workers to know he was a Funk.

There are those that think Terry was somewhat confused about Jack Cain and is somehow confusing him with somebody else in his book.

OH, Jacks "real" name was Jack Thorton OR Jack Cain,  nobodys confirmed which is the actual name yet.  Maybe it will show up in these journals somewhere.

Jack Thornton was his real name, I lived down the street from the family in the mid 60's, Jack Cain was his wrestling name.  His adopted son Bill Thornton is not "Billy Bob Thornton" even though we are all the same age, just a coincidence.
