Brody vs Rude  Lubbock TX  circa 86
Jan 27th, 2007, 1:24pm

I attended one of Nick Roberts WCCW cards in Lubbock Texas in (cant remember)  late 85 or early 86 and the main event was a World Title match between Brody and Rude.  Rude was the champion going in.
The odd thing about this match was that it was billed as a title match and Brody won but after the match, the win wasnt acknowledged by the ring announcer, the ref or either wrestler.   I once asked Percy about this because it always bothered me and he responded with a simple "Brody was the booker and did what he wanted, when he wanted."

Port, I believe the date was April 30, 1986. The same crew wrestled in Amarillo the night before.

From Nick Roberts' journal, the April 29, 1986 show in Amarillo (and beside it the notes from the following night in Lubbock)...

As you can see, the lineup changed quite a bit from what had been advertised.

It appears this may have been the "final straw" (as you alluded to the many no-shows in another thread,) and thus the final World Class shows promoted by Mr. Roberts. There is a May 25 card listed, but no town and no numbers so I suspect that may have not happened. The next shows were mid-July with UWF talent (many of them former World Class talents -- Freebirds, Fantastics, Kamala)

Kevin actually showed up but his arm was in a sling and couldnt wrestle.  He gave an explanation but for the world, I cant remember what it was.  Thats the exact card and I still have pictures of it.  PM me your address and I'll send them to you and you can stick them in the book.

Also check the previous card because in either THIS card or the previous card had KERRY vs Gordy in a first blood contest.  It might be that Kerry subbed for Kevin on this card.  I just cant remember.

OK, I think I got it figgered out.  The results show from Amarillo.  Next page says "Lubbock=Same as Amarillo"   BUT on this card Kerry subbed for Kevin in the first blood match against Gordy.  I remember Gordy already was wiping blood from his forehead (presumeably still bleeding from the previous nite in Amarillo) on the way to the ring.  And I have the photographic evidence.   Grin

Greg-   Something else I noticed is on these WCCW cards, Nick didnt put down a payment amount by the workers names like he did back in the Amarillo days.  Did he just cut a check to Fritz and keep his cut or did Fritz just pay him a single dollar amount for promoting the WCCW shows?

At what point did Nick stop putting the dollar amounts by the names of the workers?   1981 maybe?

Kevin did have the shoulder injury as this was one week or so before the Parade of Champions at Texas Stadium that drew, what, 5,000 tops. Kevin was replaced in the six-man at Texas Stadium by Steve Simpson.

There was a May ?th card where Chris Adams challenged Rude for the title unless Im confusing it with the March 86 card.

From Mr. Roberts' journal, this is the May 25, 1986 card. I was unsure if it ever took place since there are no notes as far as attendance and who the referee was (and, from looking at his other journals, that's unusual for him NOT to have that listed.)

It does have Chris Adams against Rick Rude, so maybe this IS the last card with World Class talent promoted by Mr. Roberts. It's the only show listed between the April 30 Lubbock card and a July 14 El Paso card featuring UWF talent.

A quick scan of the journals and it appears that Mr. Roberts' stopped noting payoffs for individual wrestlers in the late-1960s.

I remember a conversation with Nickla where she said once her father started using World Class talent, the Dallas office got a lump sum (a percentage of the gate,) and he didn't have to deal with the individual payoffs. If I'm not mistaken, Gary Hart was running the office at that time. Maybe Baby Doll can elaborate more on this?

I used to call Nick monthly to see what the cards were for the month.  He'd usually call me back with the card line ups.  I remember this transition period because he stopped returning my calls and finally called out of the blue to tell me about the UWF card which I already knew about due to the TV advertisements which came from KVIH channel 12 (ABC affiliate) out of Lubbock.  Shortly after this time the KVII station from Amarillo  took over the eastern New Mexico area and we had no UWF TV for a couple months until somebody started carrying the syndicated UWF show.

Thanks. I'm sure all of us would like to see some pics from the Lubbock shows here and I'd be happy to pass along the hard copies to Nickla to include in the book if that materializes.

You can send to NWALegends.com, Post Office Box 2351, Monroe, NC 28111-2351.

I can scan them and return them if needed. Just include your return address.

Thanks very much, port!

Interesting side note.  The matches I recall from the first UWF card was......................

Sheepherders vs Fantastics      New Zealand bootcamp match (barbed wire, tables etc)

Gordy and Roberts vs Watts and Terry Taylor

Koko Ware vs John Tatum

Think Sting, Gilbert and Rick Steiner were on hand and it was held at the Coliseum instead of the Civic Center which I thought was odd as its probably about 5 times larger than the Civic center.

I was at the same match that POrt was talking about and i found it rather odd as wel, that no one acknowledged the Title Change.
But Port I'm afraid you have a couple of your stations messed up. KVIH is not a Lubbock Station. KAMC chanel 28 has always been the ABC affiliate in Lubbock. By this time in the grand scheme of things, @orld Class had moved to KJAA, (Now KJTV) chanel 34. When UWF came on it came on Sat. Nights at 1030 on KLBK chanel 13 the CBS affiliate.
Not trying to be cantankerous and contincious, just clearing up some stuff.

I didn't realize that was the first UWF card in Lubbock. I was at that card as well with my little brother. It was a great card.I loved the tag amtch between the Sheps and the fantastics. It was awesome.
I also remember the sutograph session that they had at the Coliseum before the card. I've still got  some of the autographs in my collection. Terry Taylor was one of my favorites of all time.
