a flair story from days gone by...
Feb 1st, 2007, 12:48pm

oh man i remember as kid going to the greenville mem. aud. in greenville s.c. a many of monday nights, also as a teenager and later in life...one night after the bell rang in the main event to end the match i jumped from my seat and we started running trying to beat the crowd out to our car, well i got turned around in the auditorium  somehow  i just kept running down stairs from the balcony, next thing i know i looked up and there was flair with a towel around his neck walking down the stairs...i froze,i wanted so bad to follow him but knew i'd be in deep trouble, so against my better judgement i turned and walked the other way and finally found my car,for so many years i always wanted to go "behind the curtain", and when i got my chance i backed out, but again it was probably for the best, again just another great memory for me, flair still rules!!!, and he never knew i was even around him!         martin lee

Not to hijack the thread, but that was one of the neat things about when Crockett brought wrestling to Culpeper, Va., my hometown. It was just a small town back then, maybe 25,000-30,000 people in the entire county. The junior high school gym, where the matches were held, seats about 3,000-3,500 tops.

The wrestlers would come in the backdoor of the building, near the boys' locker room. Most of the time, the heels dressed in the boys' locker room and the faces in the girls'. Between the two locker rooms there is a hallway where the concession stands are. A lot of people would stand out in the hallway and chat with the boys, get their autograph and take pictures. It was such a neat experience.

And it wasn't like we didn't get to see just anybody. I mean, they brought in Flair, Greg Valentine, Roddy Piper, Jake Roberts, Johnny Weaver, Paul Jones, Jack Brisco, Ricky Steamboat, Jay Youngblood, Ole Anderson, Blackjack Mulligan, Tully Blanchard, Manny Fernandez, Ron Bass, Babydoll, Jimmy Valiant, Dick Slater, Bob Orton, Kabuki, One Man Gang and on and on. So we saw our fair share in the early 80s.

hey you were lucky...when i finally figured out the wrerstlers actually drove to the matches in greenville s.c and you could stand out back, that was the grandest thing to me,i would wait as long as i could before bell time, then i'd run by the souveneir stand, just to look of course, never had the money to buy but it was neat to wish.
on one note when steamboat first started getting popular, he drove up one night in an old t-bird,after he got out and went in we looked inside his car and was surprised to see a playboy magazine laying on the seat????

Ric Flair, what a guy!!!Ric is the one who brought the world championship belt to the status it deserved. He was professional and all business when it came to holding the belt and making it mean something. He looked like a champion, wearing the high dollar suits and fancy shoes. The promoters liked the way he portrayed himself,so they started wanting all the guys who held belts to wear suits. When Bobby and I won the Tagteam belts, they wanted us to start wearing suits and the nice shoes.Bobby and I are country boys from Alabama,we do not wear suits. We had to go buy us some suits so we would look more professional. We did it for a year, and then all the guys went to Crockett and complained it was too hot in the summer to wear suits. He listened to the guys and we did not have to wear them any longer.Ric continued to wear his, because that was his image and it worked for him.

One night at the old CHARLOTTE COLISEUM (now CRICKET ARENA), I went to the men's room to "freshen up", and while standing at the urinal, BLACKJACK came in, dropped his wrestling bag to the floor and used the urinal right next to him.

Unfortunately, not a good time to ask for an autograph, so I spoke to him, and he spoke back.

It was during his feud with SGT. SLAUGHTER.

well that reminds me of two other stories...
once while traveling down i-85 i got behind a car, not really paying attention until i noticed the tag number...it said rbear...i thought huh? root beer, nah bear what? then it hit me could that be ivan koloff the russian bear, and so i sped up and sure enough i got beside him blew my horn and waived and he waived back,  this was late in his career but i think he was still a heel.

also i was working at a burger king in lavonia ga. as asst. mngr. and who walks in with his kids...tully blanchard! one of his kids was really fussing wanting a kids meal toy but tully wouldn't give in he just bought them a sandwich instead of the meal, well i felt sorry for the kids ,why i don't know but i shook tullys hand and told him i had seen him many a times in greenville,he smiled and didn't really want to make conversation so i gave the kids just a toy from the kids meals, imagine that?

i was working at a BOJANGLES chicken place in asheboro,nc years back in the early '90's. as i walked by the drive through i saw a man there sitting n his car. i said, "frank?". he turned around. it was frank dusek. he was surprised. i don't recall him ever working this area. he had just began working with the ACW or whatever at the time or helping JCP some then. can't recall.
i think he was as surprised that he was recognized, as i was that i saw him.

After a JCP show in Greensboro, I stopped at a convenience store to get gas, and when I went in to pay, BRUTE BERNARD was buying a six-pack of "beverage".

He had worked the show that night.

I watched him get into his car (his then tag partner BRONCO LUBICH was driving.)

cool stories...
i have thought of another, our small town did have a few nwa events but very few, anyways we are a "dry" town anyway, no liquior, but one night after a show it was told flair went to our local golden pantry for a six pack or whatever of special beverage also, and it was after 11 pm, and our town doesn't sell alcohol after 11pm, they said he pitched a fit, but this is once he lost i think.

Greenville, SC???

Me too!

I don't see events advertised here any more, what about Spartanburg?

I noticed the Simpsonville's school's Wrestling Team are hot this year, but that's all I read about.  I noticed also that Duck's Gym was for sale, I guess the fancier 'salon's' are getting all the business now.

So SAD
