North American Championship Wrestling? NACW
Feb 18th, 2007, 7:25pm

Does anyone remember a promotion based out of North Carolina called North American Championship Wrestling? It used to be on Friday night's out of Hickory NC several years ago. They had a huge show in Tennessee with Ole Anderson doing some commentary, Rick Steiner and Buff Bagwell were on the show. Jamal ( Umaga of today's WWE) was a featured star who was beating everyone half to death.
Whatever happened to that promotion? They had some entertaining old school shows.

I remember going to one of their shows in Gaffney,SC.  Maybe summer of 2004?  They were taping 4 (?) weeks worth of TV.  I did actually get to see it on Charter Cable several weeks later very late at night.  Tim Horner was the booker for the show, and the owner was Ben Throckmorton who also did announcing/interviews.

Eventually they teamed with a group called Wrestling Xtreme Overload (?) or changed their name to that.  I remember them hyping a big show in Morristown,TN that had Buff and Rick Steiner on it.  The crowd didn't look all that big thouhg.

Danny Dollar, Big Wood, Drew D-Light, The Turbanators, Perry James, Lance Gaylord, Deon Johnson and The Black Angel were some of the guys I remember being there.

I'm certain it wasn't Mr. Hamilton...if you go to the site below and enter www.nacw.net,  you can see what their old site looked like.

Thanks for the feedback. They seemed to be on the verge of taking off and then all of a sudden, the promotion disappeared. I was just wondering what happened to them. I gather funding or lack thereof killed them. I did enjoy their tv show, though. They had a mix of young stars and a lot of veterans from the old mid-atlantic days.

Grin It's nice to know that someone was watching.

I started NACW in Shallotte, NC in early 2000 and ran it actively through early of 2005.

As with most start-up companies of any kind, we were undercapitalized and over worked.

We grew the TV into 13 states on CSS Sports South and were on for nearly a year. The cost of the TV outgrew our live attendance so we called it quits.

Contrary to most, I still believe a a regional entity could survive and flourish in today's environment but it would be expensive to bankroll for for a period suffiecient for it to take root and grow.

I would still like to give it a go if I could find sufficient funding. Oh well ..you just never know your luck.

Any way, thanks for asking about NACW.

If I can answer any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

On a separate note, we will be doing a fund raising event at The Shallotte Middle School on Saturday November 3rd. Tony Atlas will headline.

Ben, thanks for the response. Your group put out a quality product and I enjoyed the weekly tv shows. I do understand the financial constraints and how they impacted the promotion. I can see how it would take a lot of money to get a regional promotion to sustain itself for 2-3 years before you can turn a profit. Too bad you didn't have deep pockets like Vince McMahon or Ted Turner. Money is the only thing that kept them going, not the product. NACW was so much like Mid Atlantic wrestling as you always focused on the wrestlers and the matches, not stupid back stage vignettes or crude soap opera story lines so prevalent in today's WWE and even TNA.

Sorry but I was rambling on earlier and failed to answer any of the questions already posed.

There were a smidge over 800 folks that attended our live broadcast "Retribution" which aired in 13 states Live on CSS. This live broadcast peaked at 1.4 in the ratings in several major markets including Atlanta and Nashville. The average was just over 1. About the same numbers TNT draws on a weekly basis.

WXO was the brainchild of a guy named Steven Mills who is from Wales. He had several TV outlets overseas that wanted a high end program. Specifically outlets in Africa, Germany, Diego Garcia, and others.
I rebranded my product, "NACW WARZONE", naming it WXO and added an entrance set, etc to accomodate the look he felt we needed. We added "name wrestlers" and lots of dollars to the budget.
In hindsight this was a mistake but we needed funding and this appeaed to be a viable option of getting additonal funds to grow the business.

As often happens in the wrestling business, Mills took the money and run after getting 11 weeks of TV. I had sent him the "retribution show split into 2 weeks prior to the WXO productions beginning to "get himn across to the new shows" . He had 13 weeks of TV (a full season according to the contract with ActionX in SA) and had no further need to pay me. I'm guessing here but I never got any money from the sale of the shows which we co-owned.
In my opinion the guy was/is a crook!

Regarding WHKY TV 14: We were on WHKY TV 14 in Hickory (which served Shelby to Rockingham(east to west) on cable and Boone to gaffney north to south) We ran regularly in the western part of NC and SC drawing decent numbers in Morganton, Lenoir, Newton, Gaffney, Laurens, Walhalla, and elsewhere. We also always drew good at home in Shallotte with our TV playing on WSFX TV out of Wilmington.

Our Assassin was none other than Randal Brown, the maker of the finest wrestling ring in existence btw. Randal was a big asset to our organization and a good friend to me to this day.

Follow this link to check out some of the stuff we did:

http://www.brightcove.tv/channel.jsp?channel=595242125

There are 17 complete episodes of The Warzone online ready to stream free of charge along with 8-9 WXO programs.  If you've got some time to kill check it out.

Who were your INFERNOS, and why didn't they get a bigger push?

The Infernos in NACW were Jim Tucker and Ray Gordon.

Both guys were affordable and dependable and always entertaining. We used them to help get baby face teams over as needed. It was/is difficult to find guys who can work and entertain the fans and who are willing to do what is asked of them.

Both Jim and Ray were professionals in this sense and valuable to NACW.

Ben,
If you ever get the itch to put on an old school show in the Greenville, SC area, let me know. There are a lot of old school wrestling fans in this area. Monday nights at the old Memorial Auditorium were classic. That was torn down in 1997 to make way for the Bi-Lo Center. I have not been to any wrestling shows at the Bi-Lo center. When WCW went under, I have had no desire to see any of the WWE crap that parades through town.

Ben, sounds like a great card. Unfortunately, a little too far from my area. I hope the show goes well. Once again, I enjoyed your product and wish you the best in whatever you choose to do.

Wow...talk about memories.  I had the distinct pleasure of working with NACW and Ben over the years.  I can say without a doubt that Ben is just plain and simple a classy individual.  He is a great person.  He led by example.  He gave the best and expected the same and he got it.  He allowed me the opportunity to step into the "squared circle" and work as a referee.  What an experience.  I got to call matches for some of the legends...Ricky Morton, Robert Gibson, Buff Bagwell, The Barbarian, Abdullah the Butcher. Lelani and many others.  I also got to work with some of the young talent like Danny Dollar, the Main Attraction, Bad Brad Hunter, Persephone, Amber O'neal, Krissy Vaine, Jenny Taylor and many others.  It was truly an honor to be in the ring with these legends. I was always amazed at just how much punishment these guys and girls could take and keep going.  I have seen some of the wrestlers in the back be in so much pain that I didn't think they could do the match..but when the bell rang, they were ready to rumble. That type of dedication is what NACW was all about.  It was also always geared toward families....the excitement of seeing the kids around the wrestlers was just great. I just found out that Ben ran a show in Shallotte.  Ben...if you need a referee ...my number is the same.  Call me.  I would really love to get back in the ring with a class organization.  And if NACW is back...and I hope it is...it will be a class organization.  Looking forward to hearing from you Ben....let's get this thing going again.

Hey Randy....

Thanks for the kind words.

Last Saturday's show went pretty good.

The crowd was around 350 and seemed to really enjoy the matches.

The six man with The Tucker brothers vs Black Angel, Bubba Jones and T-Roy Jones was the most fun I've had at a wrestling match since 1976.
Awesome stuff.

Tony Atlas beat Abdul Zaatar in a a really good match and was mobbed by the kids afterward.

Brad Hunter beat Jake Manning who was managed by Tony Cicero by DQ in the final bout. Jake was subbing for Bobby Houston who couldn't make it.

No Randall Brown was the Assassin on this show & contrary to his claims, he never teamed with Jody Hamilton & I got that directly from Jody. Jody did put him over as being a good guy but said he was NEVER, EVER one of the Assassins
