Quick question...who was Checkmate behind the mask?  Just saw him teaming with The Magic Dragon on 24/7 and figured one of you WCCW fans had to know.  Thanks!

Actually I think it was Tony Charles.

I have heard both names myself, no clue which is was for certain without doing research, I always thought it was Les though

Had Dusty Wolfe and a few other buddies in the business back then confirm it was Tony Charles, Les was still wrestling for Crockett/NWA at this time with the NWA Jr. title.
