I'm not saying he is bad, but alot of you guys use him as the measuring stick for all announcers, and I feel that there were alot of announcers better than him.
I have to agree that Solie seems to be getting too much credit.
Having grown up on Mid-Atlantic Wrestling I know my opinion is biase.
1. Bob Caudle ( I especially enjoyed the years he teamed with David Crockett, Bob was a calming influence on David.
2. Jim Ross (Easily one of the best ever, can work with anyone but just overused at this point, maybe too much of a company man to get the best commentary now.)
3. Rich Landrum (Just a smooth delivery, should have been kept on by the Crocketts)
4. Les Thatcher
5. Gordon Solie (Not sure if I could take him on a weekly basis for a whole hour)
6. Gorilla Monsoon with Bobby Heenan was always enjoyable
Les Thatcher, Chris Cruise and Rick Stewart were good on commentary. Tony Schiavone was good for many years but burned out before WCW ended. Too much of Tony by the time Thunder came on.
Color men come and go. It was good to have Cornette and Dangerously fill in for a while. Bobby Heenan was good for many years. Most wrestlers and managers that have the gift of gab would have worked well for short periods of time. Switching color men keeps the shows & play by play men fresh.
