Ernie Ladd IWA Champion
May 22nd, 2007, 2:44pm

After joining my first wrestling message board 3 years ago,I told the story of
Ernie Ladd doing an interview via telephone with IWA host Glenn Scott in 1977
about winning the IWA International Heavyweight Championship from Mil
Mascaras. The match probably never really happened but both Ernie Ladd and
Johnny Powers said it did on that tv episode.

After Ernie Ladd passed away,Greg Price asked me about this.I had not been
back to the Winston-Salem library to get the confirmation on this.Last week,
during a conversation with our good friend  clipcorner,I asked Mark
if he had anything on this. Sure enough he did. As you can see,Ernie Ladd
was still scheduled to defend the title  according to the small preview article
that appeared in the paper the day of the show.Even if Ernie Ladd did not
defend the title,he was at the very least, briefly recognized as the IWA
International Heavyweight Champion. This show was on April 23,1977.
Magnificent Zulu subbed for Ernie Ladd against Bulldog Brower.

Something else,Mil Mascaras wrestled in Greensboro for Jim Crockett
Promotions on Feb.6,1977.He beat Sgt. Jacque Goulet in a mid-card
match. This would have also added credibilty to the story that he was no
longer the IWA Champion.

I remember the Ernie Ladd phone call that wasnt IWA best hour. Powers was trying everything to get more interest and ratings in the IWA. But when you had a guy like Charlie Babb working for you and everyone knows about his shady past and Being on at 1 am on WXII 12 didnt help ratings either.

It was on when only diehard IWA fans like myself were awake watching it. I totally believe the whole Ernie Ladd IWA Champion was a work.

You have some good points there Jimmy. Ernie Ladd was advertised as the IWA Champion on tv for two or three weeks prior to the show and the  newspaper article on the day of the show still had him appearing. I bet all of the fans who bought tickets based on Ernie Ladd defending against Bulldog Brower were unhappy.

I have a question for you Jimmy. Over the past few years I have discussed this with several other fans who say they remember Ernie Ladd doing taped promos for this match while holding a belt. I only remember the phone conversation between Ladd and tv host Glenn Scott. Do you recall Ernie Ladd doing any promos for this match?

vague foggy memories....
i seem to recall Ladd with a belt (singles belt) as a heel wearring the crown on TV. it sure wouldn't have been at 1am cause i don't even remember it being on anytime other than 5pm saturday afternoons on WXII. and i recall my mother and step dad making comments about him. and i know my mother would not be up talking wrestling at 1am...
but again..foggy memories...if anyone can clarify or correct me here, please do.

for that matter, i don't even remember Glenn Scott on the IWA til i read posts here and elsewhere a couple years ago...

I remember Ladd having a truly terrible looking belt reminding me of something you might see teens wearing at a backyard wrestling show. I do remember the short Brower Ladd Feud because Brower had turned face and Ladd was the hated heel he portrayed so well. Ladd always acted very scared of Brower. As far as the promo cant say that I remember it.

As far as the show goes when powers took over and brought the promotion to Charlotte I only remember 2 channels carrying it channel 11 durham on saturday afternoons and WXII 12 at first 7:30 pm saturday nights for 30 minutes and then for the duration of the Powers IWA 1 am Sunday Mornings  on WXII 12. Glenn Scott was the announcer until Charlie Babb took over and he was terrible. Glenn was good

ok, sort off topic here....
WXII...i recall that in '78 or maybe the new fall schedule of '77, they started airring the "$1.98 Beauty Show" and then at 7:30 pm, "Dance Fever"....
before then, i think it was called "Sci-Fi Theatre" with old B&W 90 minute movies starting at 6:30pm after the news...i recall the house i was living at when Sci-Fi came on and we moved in that house in mid'74. that is the only time i recall watching IWA and that was at the 5pm time slot, while i lived at that house.
otherwise, it was at 5pm. on WNRW channel 45 from Winston-Salem in September '1981, when they started airring the IWA reruns and then JCP's "East Coast Wrestling" at 6pm...
i bring all this up to try to get a fix on the time frames you guys are talking about. i DO remember a lot of the IWA from the mid'70's as well as the '81 reruns..but they are all foggy....especially when i try to figure out the time periods...

Bobby, I have been using old TV Guides and archived newspapers to try to confirm the schedule that the IWA ran on WXII channel 12 Winston-Salem from 1975-1977. This will give you an idea of when you may have been watching.

Feb.- Oct. 1975- Saturday 5:00 p.m. ( Jack Reynolds was host through the August 1975 tapings. Ron Martinez took over as host during the September tapings and finished out the year of 1975.)

November 1975 through early 1976- Sunday at 1:00 a.m. (Charlie Babb took over as host sometime during 1976.)

Early 1976/Spring 1976- Sunday Night at 11:30 p.m.

May 1976- Back to Sunday morning 1:00 a.m.

July- September 1976- Saturday night 7:30 p.m.

October 1976- summer 1977- Back to Sunday morning 1:00 a.m. (Glenn Scott became the new host in 1977.)

Jack Reynolds, Tex McKenzie, Rip Hawk, Ivan Koloff, Cowboy Bob Ellis, Gino Brito and Ernie Ladd all left the IWA at around the same time in 1975. Other than the on air phone conversation with Glenn Scott in April 1977, I just can't remember Ernie Ladd being on any of the tv shows that year. That is why I was wondering if he did any promos for the title defense against Brower in Winston-Salem.

You are 100 percent correct on the IWA on WXII. One of the best things I remember seeing on the 30 minute IWA shows was when Igor was attacked by the Islanders after losing a broken glass I think armwrestling match. Lars Anderson aka Luscious Larry Henimini also did a Igor attack also.

For a short while here in southern virginia Martinsville area. We got IWA on saturday nights at 11:15pm on WSET 13 Lynchburg Va. Until I think JCP bought the time out and they started airing World Wide Wrestling or maybe it was Wide World Wrestling. WSET I think moved the IWA for a short while then cancelled it.

Now Mid Atlantic stronghold station WSLS Channel 10 also carried IWA wrestling on Saturday nights at 11:30.

Until so many ppl complained about not being able to watch Saturday Night Live then they moved it to Sunday nights at 11:30 and Monday Morning at 12:30 am for a short while. Somebody please correct me if Im wrong. I miss those old IWA shows.

saturday night live??? that's one of the stupidest shows ever on the TV..dang, i'd rather watch current WWE crap than ANY SNL shows...i definitely would never complain about something else on in opposition...that show should been canned after a couple months.
IWA was a classic..SNL is classic crap.

Back then the news was only on for 15 minutes on Satuday nights on WSET then the IWA came on at 11:15pm. Wide World Wrestling replaced it with Ed Chapral as the host. Later the news went to 30 minutes with Wide World Wrestling (or possible World Wide Wrestling if the name change had taken place) came on at 11:30.

I can't remember WSLS in Roanoke running the IWA in place of Saturday Night Live, maybe someone can confirm this. I'm thinking that it might have followed SNL at 1:00am but I didn't stay up that late too often back then.

the fued with Ladd actually had Ladd as the face. They did a racial storyline with Brower attacking Ed Fury,Pez Whatley and a young guy named Preston Nicholson ( all black) Luis Martinez did a promo about not understanding why Brower was attacking every black he could find.
