AWA-CWA TV 7/7/77 Roach's date/Garvin v. Schultz
Jul 8th, 2007, 12:57pm

AWA-CWA Championship Wrestling
Recorded and broadcast Live 7/7/77 from the studios of ch3
Broadcast across the territory on a 1 week tape delay in an edited format

The theme to 2001 plays as a classic Greek statue is rotated 360 degrees with the words Championship Wrestling emblazoned over it. The scene then fades to Lance Russell and Dave Brown and the announce position.

LR: Welcome back fans to AWA Championship Wrestling. It has been a long time in coming for me to say it but we are glad to be back and hope you are glad to have us in your homes. Lance Russell here with Dave Brown and Davy, we have an exciting program in store for our fans today, especially after what we saw July 4th in the Louisville Gardens.

DB: That is a huge understatement Lance. Southern Heavyweight Champion Jerry Jarrett came away on the short end of things against the Outlaw Ron Bass, sustaining a serious injury to back during the contest but keeping his AWA Southern Heavyweight Title.

LR: This morning we have gathered that the champion will be at the Mid-South Coliseum Monday to defend his title against Ron Bass, but he wasn’t the only man managed by Tojo Yamamoto who came away successful. David Schultz and Butch Malone left the Tag Team champions in a bloody tangle. We will see Dr. David Schultz in singles action in our main event today. We’re ready to get going, but first a word from our sponsors.

-Commercial Break-

LR: Fans we’re back, and for we have a contest ready to go in the ring. Take it away Davy.

Bobby Jaggers defeats Bill Howard in a spirited contest after connecting with a hangman’s neck breaker. After the match, Bobby joins Lance Russell.

BJ: Before you start Lance Russell, it sure does feel good to be back wrestling here in Memphis.

LR: Bobby, you took down the Spider last Wednesday night in Louisville but I understand that you want him again at the Mid-South Coliseum.

BJ: That’s right Lance. Spider, I’m past your sting and I’ve gotten inside that peanut brain of yours. At the Mid-South Coliseum, I’m gonna make sure that I break your body into so many parts that the only thing left to identify will be that greasy mask you wear. I want you in a Kansas Strap match. That is how my brothers and I settled things back home and that is how I want my business with you to end here. No hiding Spider. No escape. And certainly no help from that cripple you call a manager, Angelo Poffo.

LR: Thanks Bobby. We’ll be back with more action after these words.

-Commercial Break-

LR: Another big happening that came from the July 4th spectacular in the Louisville Gardens will be a World Heavyweight Championship match, coming right here to Championship Wrestling let’s take a look at the footage from the battle royal:

The brawling between Pat Roach, Don Muraco, and Jerry Lawler to end the battle royal is shown culminating with Roach tossing Lawler out of the ring after he had been previously thrown through the ropes.

LR: Pat Roach, come on over here. And it looks like you have some supporters here.

Pat Roach, Marc Rocco, and Jim Breaks all come out, Rocco and Breaks looking ready for action.

LR: Pat Roach, you have a shot that many here in Memphis have been looking for for a long time: a shot at AWA World Champion Nick Bockwinkel.

PR: You think your boys have been looking for a long time? I didn’t get invited to your tea party in that horse barn for no reason Mr. Russell. I’m the European Heavyweight Champion, British Heavyweight Champion, the man that won the Salibar trophy for being the best in the Battle Royal, and you have the gall to tell me that Memphis has been waiting for a while to see the champion? Nick Bockwinkel has been hiding over here in America for too long, not coming out and defending his World title where the real competition is. I’ve got an open contract Nicky and I’ll wager pints to pounds that you won’t live up to it.

LR: Now Pat, that is an awfully harsh thing to say about our World Champion…

PR: I wasn’t finished Russell! Bockwinkel, I want you this Monday night in the Mid-South Coliseum. No more hiding. No more “It’s too much to travel to Europe. I’ll be too tired”. I’m here Nicky and there’s no running anymore. Boys, go out there and show these people what real wrestling looks like.

Marc Rocco and “Gentleman” Jim Breaks defeat Burrhead and Tom Jones with a rapid array of technical moves that seem to have the fans in stunned silence. The Joneses try to mount a comeback, but Marc Rocco delivering a diving headbutt to the shoulder of Burrhead Jones, followed by Breaks locking on some unique looking arm lock gets the Brits a submission victory. After the match, Pat Roach tells both Lance and Dave “That is what real wrestling should be.”

LR: We’ve got to go to a commercial break. Stay tuned.

-Commercial Break-

LR: This is time we do have set aside for Angelo Poffo to talk about his man’s match with Bobby Jaggers, but has anyone seen Angelo? Now here we go… Dennis Condrey, Phil Hickerson, and the Spider. Three men who fall under the charge of… Wait a minute sir. Who are you?

A masked man in a moth-eaten gray suit accompanies the trio to the interview area.

MM: It’s what I’m here for that is important Mr. Russell. I have assumed control of Angelo Poffo’s charges and now that the weakling is gone, fans will understand why the Miser will be in control of this territory.

LR: Well, Mr. Miser, what do you think of Bobby Jaggers’ challenge to your man, the Spider, for a Kansas Strap match?

M: Bobby Jaggers, take a good look at the men that you have chosen to get involved with. Phil Hickerson and Dennis Condrey are two of the top tag team wrestlers in this country, but nobody has heard of them because they wrestled in backwater gyms and two bit honkytonks. No more! The Spider is the most electrifying wrestler in the sport today but has to hide his face so he can lead a normal life away from the ring. I have scrimped and saved for years to get into this business and have now found the bargain I needed to get what I want.

LR: And Mr. Miser, what are your goals here if I may be so bold to ask?

M: All I’ll tell you Lance is that for many, the ends justify the means. My means will justify going to any ends to get what I want. Bobby Jaggers will be the first to find this out.

LR: We’ll be back with more action after these messages.

-Commercial Break-

LR: Fans, we have a real treat for us. One half of the Southern tag team champions, the impressive youngster Tommy Rich, is in action against the masked man calling himself the Big O. Joining us for some additional commentary is the King of Wrestling Jerry Lawler. Jerry, it’s a pleasure to have you here.

JL: Lance, what is a real pleasure is to see a young man the caliber of Tommy Rich get a chance to move up the ranks. It will take him a while to be the equal of the likes of yours truly, but he has shown he might be championship material.

LR: Speaking of championships Jerry, you came very close to getting a shot at the World Heavyweight Champion.

JL: Pat Roach, let me tell you one thing here and now. You are taking the first World Title shot in Memphis in a long time and I wish you the best in getting the gold, but don’t come back here next week crying and complaining if Nick Bockwinkel does to you what he has done to other contenders across this country. But don’t get a real big head about winning a battle royal in Louisville Roach. You may be the European Champion, but I’m still the King of Memphis.

LR: It looks like we are ready in the ring, so take it away Davy.

Tommy Rich looks impressive here in singles competition, dropping Big O with a flying fist drop before taking him down for the final time with a Thesz Press fro the 1-2-3.

After the match, it is announced that Tommy will be defending the Southern Tag Team Titles with his partner Ricky Fields Monday night at the Mid-South Coliseum against one of the men in the Main Event, Dr. David Schultz.

-Commercial Break-

LR: Dr. David Schultz is set in the ring, with his manager Tojo Yamamoto and he is set to face a real up and comer here in the AWA, Rugged Ronnie Garvin. It’s our main event with television time remaining. Hope you enjoy it. Take it away Davy.

Ron Garvin defeats David Schultz by disqualification in a highly competitive match that finally turns when the “Honorable” Tojo Yamamoto gets involved. Garvin seems to be set to win, but Butch Malone comes out and makes it a three on one brawl until Tommy Rich and Jerry Lawler come down to even the odds. Yamamoto and his men retreat with Garvin, Rich and Lawler standing tall in the ring.

Lance Russell runs down the MSC show before signing off and telling fans to check back in at the same time on the same station.
