ROBERTO CLEMENTE COLISEUM
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO
JULY 13, 1977 7 PM
REFEREE: RICKY BENITEZ
ATTENDENCE: 10,000

--Puerto Rican national anthem

The lights die down in the Coliseum. An announcer makes his way to the ring. He identifies himself as Rick St. James and tells the audience that he will be the TV announcer for the WWC TV show that will begin in August. He explains the stipulations for the Russian Roulette Battle Royal that is about to occur.

Twelve wrestlers will participate in the battle royal. The first four wrestlers eliminated will wrestle in a tag match later in the show. The order of elimination, from then on, will determine the quarterfinal match-ups for the tournament to decide the WWC Puerto Rican Heavyweight Champion. That tournament will take place in its entirety tonight. As an added bonus, the winner of the battle royal will win $3000.

St. James introduces the wrestlers as they come to the ring. They are:

THE INFERNOS 1 & 2
EL DIABLO MASCARAS (ACCOMPANIED BY MARK MANSON)
GORILLA MONSOON
HURACAN CASTILLO
KING CURTIS
HIGH CHIEF AFI (IN FULL SAMOAN WAR REGALIA)
GIL HAYES
EL TIGRE PEREZ
SUPER GLADATOR
VICTOR RIVERA
CARLOS COLON

Homer O’Dell accompanies The Infernos to the ring.

ORDER OF ELIMINATION:

1) Inferno 2-Super Gladiator throws out Inferno 2
2) Super Gladiator-Inferno 1 reverses an Irish whip and O’Dell pulls down the top rope, out of the sight of Benitez.
3) Inferno 1-dropkicked over the top rope by El Tigre Perez.
4) El Tigre Perez-clotheslined over the top rope by Gil Hayes after an atomic drop.
5) Gorilla Monsoon-The remaining wrestlers gang up on Monsoon and dump him over the top rope.
6) Gil Hayes-Flipped over the rope by Monsoon during the struggle.
7) El Diablo Mascaras- Flipped over the top rope by Colon.
Manson goes to the back but returns to the ring.

8) Huracan Castillo-Crotched over the top rope by High Chief Afi, falls off the rope to the floor, hobbles to the back Manson cheers and is obviously representing the High Chief.
9) King Curtis-Charges Colon in the corner hits his shoulder on the ring post. Rivera Irish whips Curtis into a Colon dropkick. The momentum carries him over the top. Manson is livid.
10) Victor Rivera-thrown over the top rope by the High Chief after a swinging neck breaker.
11) High Chief Afi-Throws Colon over the top rope. Colon skins the cat and flips back over. Clotheslines Afi over the top rope as Afi turns around.
12) Carlos Colon-Left alone in the ring-Wins the $3000.

Time: 16:28
Match 1-

THE INFERNOS w/ HOMER O’DELL defeat SUPER GLADIATOR/ EL TIGRE PEREZ

This is a very competitive match that looks like it will go to Super Gladiator and Perez. Inferno 2 is in a chicken wing, applied by the Super Gladiator. Homer O’Dell jumps on the ring apron, distracting Benitez. Inferno 1 knees Gladiator in the back. He drags Inferno 2 on top of The Gladiator for the win.

Time: 17:10

Match 2-

WWC PUERTO RICAN HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINALS

GORILLA MONSOON defeats GIL HAYES.

This is an exciting match that has a controversial ending. Hayes has Monsoon in an Indian Death Lock, having worked on Monsoon’s right knee for most of the match. The pain puts the big man’s shoulders down. Benitez counts three just after Monsoon grabs the bottom rope. Hayes thinks he has won. Monsoon comes up from behind as Hayes argues. Monsoon lifts Hayes into a Samoan drop for the win.

Time: 16:30

Match 2-

EL DIABLO MASCARAS W/ MARK MANSON defeats HURACAN CASTILLO

Diablo Mascaras and Castillo wrestle a high intensity mat war that has the crowd on their feat for the Huracan. Manson hits Huracan with a thrust to the throat after Diablo throws Castillo to the floor. Manson rolls Castillo back into the ring. Diablo Mascaras hits a flying head butt. He clamps on a camel clutch and pulls violently back. Castillo submits after several attempts to reach the ropes. With an eerie smile on his face, Manson tells Diablo Mascaras not to release the hold. Only when Benitez threatens to reverse the decision does the masked man let go.

Time: 17:22.

KING CURTIS w/ MARK MANSON defeats VICTOR RIVERA

The veteran Rivera makes a costly mistake late in this match. He lowers his head too son on a back drop attempt. Curtis lands a big running kick to the head. He repels off the ropes and takes Rivera out with a big splash. After the cover by Curtis, Manson lifts his charge’s arm in victory, with a maniacal smile on his face.

TIME: 15:39

CARLOS COLON defeats HIGH CHIEF AFI w/ MARK MANSON

Afi and Colon have periods of dominance during this match. Afi uses a special combination of strength and agility to work on Colon’s back. A shoulder block off the apron sends Colon into the ring railing. Colon explodes and poles Afi and rolls him into the ring for a series of bone jarring suplexes. Afi barely gets his foot on the ropes to stop a pin.

Afi goes to the top rope late in the match. He raises his arms and tries a splash that hurtles him across the ring. Manson turns to the crowd and points back toward the ring. Colon rolls out of the way. He follows up with a cradle suplex for the pin. Manson is livid when he realizes what has happened.

Time: 15:53

SEMI-FINALS

GORILLA MONSOON defeats EL DIABLO MASCARAS w/ MARK MANSON

Gorilla grabs Manson early and shoves him into the ring apron. This takes care of manager interference for the duration of this match. Diablo Mascaras takes out the legs of Monsoon and works on his back, with a bow and arrow being the move of choice. It takes a lot out of him, but Monsoon powers out of the moves of the masked man.

Late in the contest, Diablo Mascaras climbs to the top rope. He tries to throw a flying body block on Monsoon. Monsoon catches Diablo, shifts his weight, and executes a running power slam for the win.

Time: 20:25

KING CURTIS w/ MANSON defeats CARLOS COLON by CO

Manson does not come out with Curtis to start the match. During the match, chop to the throat by Curtis to Colon have the fans ready to storm the ring. The Monster Curtis wears out Colon with fist and kicks that open Colon up.

Benitez and Curtis argue throughout the match. Colon takes advantage of one of those arguments to climb the ropes and throw a missile dropkick. Curtis falls to the floor. High Chief Afi comes out to attract the attention of Benitez. Manson comes out from the back and grabs the ring hammer. Manson hits Colon with it. Colon is counted by Benitez.

WWC PUERTO RICAN HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

KING CURTIS w/ MANSON vs. GORILLA MONSOON

Benitez says he cannot change the result of the preceding match but he can send Manson back for this contest. Manson protests but it falls on deaf ears. The crowd roars their approval.

Monsoon and Curtis do not wrestle a technical classic. They beat each other from pillar to post. Curtis takes out a pencil and carves up Monsoon. It takes a while, but Monsoon uses the foreign object to do some composition of his own.

Manson comes out despite the banning earlier. Monson tells Benitez he will take care of the problem. Gorilla throws Manson into the ringside table. Curtis has recovered in the ring and attacks Monsoon when he returns. Curtis takes off a turnbuckle pad. Curtis tries to whip Monsoon into the metal casing. Monsoon reverses and sends the heel into it instead. Monsoon lifts Curtis into a backbreaker for the win.

Great win for Gorilla Monsoon! Probably one of the best in the business that never really got a title run. At least here in Puerto Rico, he can have a nice ride into the sunset.

Liked Manson going after everyone, especially Carlos Colon. I know he has bigger and better things coming down the pike here in the Caribean, but a loss to King Curtis must be a tough one.

The WWC is a great blending of talents and I look forward to more from all involved.

I liked it. I liked Monsoon. I haven't seen a lot of him, but I did see the Ali incident in it's initial airing. He makes a very credible first Champion. He colud hold the belt for a while, or whoever beats him will look good. A very good booking choice.

I'm very happy to see WWC up and running again, and I think you guys will do a great job with it.

I will agree about Monsoon, I think he makes a great Champion, I was always impressed with him IRL, although most of what I saw was in the final years of his career, but even then you could see how good he was.

I like how some groups help each other out and do this joint shows. They are fun to do and with two people not that much work. Loved the show and this looks to the start of something big.

Nice start for the World Wrestling Council. I have a special place in my heart for Puerto Rico wrestling so it's great to see the WWC start on such a high note. Congrats to Gorilla Mansoon on a hard-fought title victory. King Curtis looked impressive as well, especially going over Colon.
