AWA Championship Wrestling 7/14 (Bock, Bass,& BBC)
Jul 17th, 2007, 5:26pm

AWA Championship Wrestling
Recorded and Broadcast live on 7/14/77 on ch3
Broadcast across the territory on a 1-week tape delay and in an edited format

The theme to 2001 plays as a classic Greek statue is rotated 360 degrees with the words Championship Wrestling emblazoned over it. The scene then fades to Lance Russell and Dave Brown and the announce position

LR: Wrestling fans, if you missed out on the action at the Mid-South Coliseum, you missed one heckuva night of wrestling action. Lance Russell here as always with Dave Brown and Dave, we have a new Southern Heavyweight Champion.

DB: That’s right Lance, “Outlaw” Ron Bass has finally fulfilled his mission and taken down the man that held the belt for over 6 month, Jerry Jarrett. But that isn’t the only big news we had at the MSC Lance.

LR: We also saw the World Heavyweight Champion, Nick Bockwinkel hold on to his title and the Champ will be here today to talk with us about what was a very exciting match. And speaking of world class people and organizations, just before we came on the air I was notified that today, here in the studio, we have a representative of the BBC here, also wanting to speak to Mr. Bockwinkel about his title defense against the Englishman Pat Roach. We have an exciting card of action set to go on this program as well. We’ll get right to it after these messages.

-Commercial Break-

LR: Fans, we’re ready for our first contest, so take it away Davy.

Kelly Kiniski makes a very impressive appearance, defeating the veteran Bill Howard with his family trademark, the Canadian back breaker.

After the match, Kelly joins Lance in the interview area.

LR: When you look at the history of this great sport, the name Kiniski is one of the names that show up with the greatest. And this man appears well on his way to adding to the legacy of his family. Kelly Kiniski, an impressive performance.

KK: Lance, thanks a lot. But you’ve talked to a lot of wrestlers about tradition and legacy. It’s something I have to live with every day. My dad’s got connections all over the wrestling world and I get letters telling me about what I’ve done in my matches, both right and wrong. I always have fans tell me how great they thought my dad was and how they wish me luck to follow in his footsteps. I came to Memphis, Lance, to get out from under my old man’s shadow. I may have a long way to go before I can get a title shot of my own here in the CWA, but it feels good to just be Kelly Kiniski.

LR: Well said young man, well said indeed. We’ll be back with more action after these messages.

-Commercial Break-

LR: We’re back fans and action is ready in the ring so take it away Davy.

The southwestern star Tito Montez defeats Dennis Condrey by disqualification after Phil Hickerson, who was at ringside, gets involved and the duo deliver a beating to Tito until Bobby Jaggers rushes to the ring with a steel pipe in hand, sending Condrey and Hickerson scrambling to the interview area where the Miser grabs the announce microphone from Lance Russell.

M: Jaggers, I thought going down to defeat at the hands of my Spider would have humbled you but you decided to stick you nose into the business of my men once again. Dennis Condrey and Phil Hickerson will take you and that grease ball Montez down not just Monday night in the Mid-South Coliseum but in every arena in this territory. Your days in the CWA are numbered Jaggers. Mark my words because you can take them to the bank.

Jaggers grabs the ring microphone

BJ: Whoa there boy. Tito Montez is a man that helped make me who I am today in this business because he taught me that you never leave unfinished business anywhere. If you pick a fight, you knock the man out. If you meet a woman you think is perfect, you make sure you see her at the end of the isle in a church. And if you go to war, you bring every weapon you have and you fight to the death. Now your boys think they can send me packing? Whether it’s in the MSC, Louisville Gardens, Civic Auditorium in Nashville, or even on the sidewalks on Beale Street, I will stomp a whole in each one of you with this man by my side. Bring it on boys. Bring it on.

Condrey and Hickerson look ready for a fight, but the Miser finally backs them off into the locker room.

LR: A huge barnburner here fans; we’ll be right back.

-Commercial Break-

LR: At the top of the broadcast fans, I mentioned that a representative of the BBC was here and he will be intently watching this next contest. It’s the British duo of Marc Rocco and Jim Breaks taking on the masked Medics. Davy, take it away.

Rocco and Breaks demolish the masked tandem of the Medics after Rocco delivers a big diving head butt on Medic #2 and then Breaks locks on his inverted hammerlock to get a submission victory.

After the match, the Brits come over and join Lance and his guest from the BBC.

LR: Marc Rocco, Jim Breaks, an impressive victory once again. And I understand that my guest here from the BBC, I’m sorry I can’t remember your name sir.

JR:  Lord Raven. Lord John Raven. Gentleman, this was exactly the type of performance that the BBC is looking for when we begin to broadcast top stars like yourselves. But, Mr. Russell, when we talk about top stars, there is one man that the BBC is by far wanting to speak with most; AWA Champion Nick Bockwinkel.

Bockwinkel walks out into the interview area, bedecked in a finely tailored sport coat and with the World title belt clutched in his arm.

LR: Wait a second, Nick Bockwinkel, this isn’t your scheduled interview time…

NB: Lance, when a man wants to talk with the best in the business, they should get to speak with the best in the business. Now, Lord Raven, you have the attention of the World Champion. What can a man of my unimaginable intellect do for you?

JR: What I want is a World Championship match to sell to my bosses back in Merry Old England. It has to be a man with star power in Europe and there is only one man here in Memphis who fits that bill: Pat Roach. You give me a World title match Monday night in this pretty Coliseum, and you will find out what it is like to have the BBC involved in Championship Wrestling.

NB: Well Lance, Pat Roach pushed me as hard as any man I’ve been in the ring with in quite a while. If giving Pat another shot at the AWA World Title will help the AWA expand, then Pat will get his title shot…

JR: But to make sure that this American Wrestling is palatable to our customers, we request that this match be fought under British Rules.

NB: British Rules? Wait a second. I’ve never heard of British Rules…

JR: Well, if you sir are wanting to back out of this match, then the BBC will take our business elsewhere and make other men very wealthy.

LR: Now Nick, one match won’t make a world of difference and it will do great things for Memphis Wrestling and for the AWA as a whole.

NB: Okay. The match is on. But who will be running this match Raven?

JR: These two fine men know British Rules and I’m certain that despite their connection with Mr. Roach they will help follow these rules to a tee. Cherrie O!

LR: A huge match fans! This Monday is going to be a major night in the Memphis Wrestling. We’ll be back with more after these messages from Covington Pike Toyota.

-Commercial Break-

LR: We have one half of the AWA Southern Tag Team champions in action next up fans, so lets go to the ring for the action.

“Professor” Bill Ash surprises the studio audience with a very impressive win over “Rapid” Ricky Fields after he connects with the Arkansas Whiplash. Ash was very strong and only seemed out of the driver seat in very short stretches.

LR: A big win for Bill Ash in his charge after the AWA Junior Heavyweight Title. And speaking of champions, joining me now are AWA Southern Heavyweight Champion Ron Bass and his manager, Tojo Yamamoto. Gentlemen, I can only say it has been a rough week for you.

TY: Rough week? Do you think the Southern Heavyweight Champion losing in two separate non-title matches is just a tough week Lance Russell? It is a massive catastrophe Russell and we are going to avoid this at all costs.

RB: Jerry Lawler! Pat Roach! You boys got me when I wasn’t prepared and that ain’t happening no more! As far as I’m concerned, you two aren’t getting any title shot and now or never. And Roach, the one who should be getting the AWA title shots around here should be the Southern Heavyweight Champion. You don’t deserve those shots anymore than that fool Lawler does.

TY: So from now on, before we head into the Mid-South Coliseum, I will be drawing a name from this bowl and that member of the CWA roster will get a shot of a lifetime at the Southern Heavyweight Title, and we will start right here on Championship Wrestling. Lawler, if you want to even get your name into this bowl, you’re going to have to go through each and every member of my organization. Starting with this man right here, Dr. David Schultz.

Schultz walks out as Yamamoto san reaches into the bowl and pulls out a name, handing it to Lance Russell to read.

LR: I guess the man that will be wrestling next in our Main Event for the Southern Heavyweight Title is non other that… Bugsy McGraw.

The studio audience howls until Yamamoto san grabs the microphone.

TY: And once we destroy this mongrel, Monday night Ron Bass will face…

The fans start cheering again and out walks the fabulous one, Jackie Fargo.

JF: Yamamoto. Let’s cut through all this baloney and face two truths. First of all is your Outlaw is just too yellow to face Jerry Lawler.

Bass goes nuts and Yamamoto is straining to hold him back while yelling at the same time.

JF: And number two, since you don’t want to face the King of Memphis, why don’t you put that little scrap of paper back and face the me Monday night instead.

LR: What a huge challenge fans. Mr. Yamamoto?

TY: Jackie Fargo, you have just signed you own death warrant by stepping in the path of Ron Bass. We will see you Monday, after you see what we do to Bugsy McGraw.

LR: That’s out main event fans, and will be up right after these messages.

-Commercial Break-

LR: It’s a special main event with the Southern Heavyweight Title on the line. “Outlaw” Ron Bass verses Bugsy McGraw. Take it away Davy.

The Outlaw demolishes McGraw, finishing him off with a big gord buster. Yamamoto pushes Bass to be more and more brutal, yelling at Fargo who is at ringside urging on McGraw.

LR: A huge, action packed broadcast today fans. We will be at the Mid-South Coliseum Monday night and across the territory the rest of the week. See you at the arenas and back here for more Championship Wrestling. For Dave Brown, I’m Lance Russell. See you next week.

Poor Medics. Nobody looses to them.
