"Mid-Pacific Wrestling", Kahuku, HI, 7/21/77

Kahuku High School
Kahuku, HI
7/21/77

Opening Match, one fall, 20 minutes
Takashi Onoume vs. Jerry Monti

The veteran Monti takes on the youngster from Japan. Monti roughs up Onoume, but Takashi rallies and pins Monti with a sunset flip.
Winner-Takashi Onoume (13:53)

Second Match, one fall, 20 minutes
Robert Toronto vs. Dr. Hiro Ota

The devious Dr. Ota meets the man from Samoa. The Kahuku crowd gets behind Toronto and he dominates the early action. Ota takes to the floor to regroup. The ringsiders jeer him. Ota returns to the ring and goes to the martial arts. Toronto is in trouble. Ota slaps on the Japanese sleeper and it’s all over.
Winner-Dr. Hiro Ota (15:39)

Third Match, one fall, 45 minutes
Samson Kawamatsu vs. Steve Rickard

Kawamatsu is a newcomer from Japan. The veteran from New Zealand will have his hands full. The early minutes go back and forth as neither man wants to make a mistake. Rickard takes control with a punishing headlock. Kawamatsu shoots him into the ropes and drops him with a shoulder tackle. The match continues to be even until Rickard wraps Samson up in the sleeper. A hard-fought win for Rickard.
Winner-Steve Rickard (21:09)

Semi-Final, one fall, 60 minutes
The Von Steiger Brothers vs. Bill Francis and Superfly Tui

The Von Stiegers want the Hawaiian Tag Team Titles, as does Francis. Bill’s regular partner is in the main event, so he teams with the young Tui. Francis looks very good early as he outwrestles Karl Von Steiger. Kurt tags in and starts to roughhouse. Francis tags in the you Superfly and Tui’s speed confounds both Germans. The Von Steigers ratchet up the physicalness and the tide turns. Karl bodyslam Tui and covers him for the win.
Winners-Von Steiger Brothers (19:58)

Main Event, one fall, 60 minutes
Hawaiian Championship
Ripper Collins (Champion) vs. Sam Steamboat

Collins will meet High Chief Peter Maivia at Blaisdell Arena at the end of the month. He should not overlook the skilled Steamboat, or he will not have the Hawaii Title when he leaves Kahuku. Steamboat controls the early action. Everything Collins tries is matched and bettered by Steamboat. Sam clamps on the abdominal stretch, but Collins gets to the ropes. The “King” takes to the floor to regroup. The ringsiders give him a hard time and Ripper gives in right back. Collins returns and lands a boot to the mid-section. Steamboat is slowed and may be in trouble. The next few minutes belong to Collins. Sam makes a brief rally, but Collins drops the elbow and covers Sam for the win. It looks like the Champ is ready for Maivia.
Winner-Ripper Collins (25:21)

Thanks, I had some time, so I threw together a house show. Kahuku High School is on the North Shore of Oahu. It's well known in ahtletic circles in the Islands. They won the state football championship last season. US Womens Soccer Team member, Natasha Kai, is a graduate of Kahuku.

Some of their football alumni
Chris Kemoeatu
Maake Kemoeatu
Toniu Fonoti
Chris Naeole
Itula Mili
Aaron Francisco

Lots of good football players and lots of vowels, as well.

I freaked out when I saw this because I thought I'd forgotten about it happening. I see it's just San Fran guys. Smiley

I wish I knew more about Ripper Collins. He's actually gay and because of that workers used to think Luke Graham was too, and he could get great heat. Outside of that, I'm clueless.
