WWWF - World Wide Wrestling Federation The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA Ring Announcer: Gary Michael Capetta Referees: Dick Whorle & Dick Kroll July 16th, 1977 1-Victor Rivera drew Jerry Valiant... (20:00) *More back and forth action between these men and once again nothing was resolved. Neither man has yet to be pinned here in the WWWF. 2-20 Man, Over-The-Top Rope Battle Royal to recieve a shot at WWWF Heavyweight Champion 'Superstar' Graham later in the card... *Early on everyone ganged up on Gorilla Monsoon and eliminated him. When the dust settled, King Curtis, Baron Mikel Scicluna, Tony Atlas, S.D. Jones & Ken Patera were the final five men left in the ring vying for the title shot. Tony & S.D. were outnumbered, but they banded together and evened the odds when Tony eliminated Patera. As this was happening, King Curtis & The Baron teamed up to toss the sentimental favorite, 'Philly's Native Son' S.D. Jones from the ring. This left Atlas to square off against the former WWWF Tag Team Champions, 2 on 1. Atlast did his best and ducked and dodged until he was able to catch both men off guard by ducking under a tag team double clothesline attack and firing back off the ropes with a one man double clothesline of his own that send King Curtis down and Scicluna stumbling back towards the ropes where he almost fell out of the ring! Atlas was quickly on The Baron and went to dump him out, but as he did Curtis recovered and came over to dump Atlas to the floor. Scicluna tried to hang on, but ended up falling to the floor as well in the process. Your winner: King Curtis Iaukeau (13:37) 3-'Polish Power' Ivan Putski pinned Butcher Nova following The Polish Hammer and a Sit Down Splash... (6:15) *Putski is returning after a long absence and really thrilled the fans in his return to The Spectrum. 4-Pat Patterson (w/The Grand Wizard) defeated 'Irish' Pat Barrett with the sleeper hold. (7:21) *Barrett put up a little bit of a fight in the early going as long as Patterson was sticking to the rules, but once Patterson got rough it was all over as 'Irish' Pat could not escape the dreaded sleeper hold. Following the contest, Referee Dick Kroll reversed the damage that Patterson had done and then helped 'Irish' Pat to the back. 5-Ken Patera (w/ Capt. Louis Albano) defeated Gorilla Monsoon by countout. (10:55) After what had transpired in the battle royal earlier, Monsoon was much fresher that Patera and decided that he needed to go in for the kill in the early going. Monsoon hit Patera with a series of chops to the head in the opening moments and then quickly slammed Patera and followed up with the big splash! Referee Dick Whorle started the count but then realized that Patera foot was hanging off the ring apron and under the ropes so he stopped his count. Monsoon continued his attack, but missed an avalanche in the corner and this allowed Patera to catch his breath and battle back, thanks to a distraction from Monsoon's long time enemy, Captain Louis Albano. Patera controlled the next several minutes of the match until the big Gorilla started to mount a comeback. Capt. Lou got up on the ring apron and tried to get involved again, but this time Monsoon grabbed the good Captain by a handful of hair and rammed him head-to-head into Patera. Gorilla then followed up with the Giant Swing on Patera and looked to have the match at hand, but he went around too many times and got dizzy from the many, many rotations. As Gorilla dizzily stumbled backwards towards the ropes, Albano had recovered enough to hold the ropes open and allow Monsoon to tumble backwards through the ropes. Thanks to Albano, Gorilla landed hard on the concrete floor and could not recover in time to beat the referee's count. Intermission: 6-Tony Atlas defeated Baron Mikel Scicluna with the full nelson...(8:11) *The Baron jumped Atlas before the bell and controlled much of the early going, but once Atlas locked his hands and cinched in the Full Nelson it was all over for the man from the Isle of Malta. 7-WWWF Tag Team Champions Carlos Colon & Chief Jay Strongbow defeated Spiros Arion & Nikolai Volkoff (w/ Freddie Blassie) 2 falls to 1 to retain the titles... First Fall: Blassie's team was disqualified by referee Dick Kroll when Arion & Volkoff both remained in the ring for an extended period of time and victimized Chief Jay Strongbow...(9:38) Second Fall: Nikolai Volkoff continued to dominate the match and pinned Chief Jay Strongbow following an over-the-knee backbreaker...(16:38) Third Fall: Strongbow was eventually able to make the hot tag, which led to Colon pinning Arion following The Cannonball to win the deciding fall of the match...(22:45) 8-King Curtis Iaukeau battled WWWF Heavyweight Champion 'Superstar' Billy Graham to a no contest when referee Dick Whorle deemed that both men were too bloody to continue. (14:45) *This one was out of control from the beginning and only got worse after that as the end saw both men bloody and rolling around the canvas as they gouged at each other's face. 9-S.D. Jones pinned Jesse 'The Body' Ventura (w/Capt. Louis Albano) with a small package in what has to be considered an upset...(9:15) *It was clear that Ventura wasn't concerned with his opponent from the very beginning as he seemed to take a lot of glee in hamming it up with Albano while he pounded away on 'Special Delivery'. Ventura continued to torture Jones until he set him up for and locked him into 'The Body Breaker' over the shoulder backbreaker. Ventura looked certain of victory as he bounced around the ring with Jones upside down across his shoulder. Ventura turned to move back towards the center of the ring, but he got too close to the top rope and Jones was able to get his feet on the top rope and use them to push off and flip over onto his feet, much to the shock and dismay of 'The Body' S.D. then quickly small packaged Ventura and though Jesse tried, he could not escape before the count of three! S.D. Jones has pinned Jesse 'The Body' Ventura! Captain Lou & 'The Body' are livid in the ring as Jones quickly rolls out of the ring and celebrates his victory! Jesse complains to the referee that Jones used the ropes, and Referee Dick Kroll leaves the ring, goes over to S.D. and RAISES HIS ARM IN VICTORY! This one is going to stand. Albano and Ventura can't believe it and continue to stomp around the ring and bellyache as Gary Michael Capetta tries to announce Jones the victor, but Ventura won't let him! JESSE VENTURA: 'Gimme that mic, Kaputski.... Now you listen here, Jones! That was nothing but a fluke! (It) Couldn't happen again in a million years and you know it! Besides, you wudda' never pinned me anyways if you wouldn't have used the ropes! Why I'd say your nothing but a no good cheater! If you think your some kinda' 'REAL MAN' why don't you get up here in this ring RIGHT NOW and try to pin me again...Let's just see that happen, huh!?!?! What about it!?!?!?' *With that Jones slowly and carefully got back into the ring, being sure to keep an eye on 'The Captain' at all times. Ventura demanded a test of strenght, but Jones ducked under his lock up attempt and began peppering 'The Body' with his lightning quick boxing jabs! Ventra is reeling... Wait, here comes Ken Patera! Patera jumps 'Special Delivery' from behind! Now they are both beating down on Jones. Look, even that coward Albano is getting in a few cheap shots. Wait, what is this...The crowd is stirring. Now the crowd has errupted.... IT'S TONY ATLAS!!!! Atlas hits the ring and begins clobbering everything that moves and as he does S.D. starts to fight back! S.D. and Tony are now both having their way with Albano's men! A double clothesline sends Ventura to the floor! A double dropkick sends Patera out the other side. LOOK, ALBANO IS CAUGHT IN THE RING WITH JONES & ATLAS!!!! Each man grabs a handful of hair and runs with Albano and tosses him over the top rope where he bowls over Ventura & Patera, who had regrouped on the floor! The Spectrum is rocking from the rafters as Albano and his men high tail it to the back!
