AWA Championship Wrestling Recorded and broadcast live 7/28/77 from the studios of ch3 Broadcast across the territory with a 1 week tape delay The theme to 2001 plays as a classic Greek statue is rotated 360 degrees with the words Championship Wrestling emblazoned over it. The scene then fades to Lance Russell and Dave Brown and the announce position. LR: Welcome back wrestling fans to your home for AWA Championship Wrestling. Lance Russell and Dave Brown here and Davy, wouldn’t you agree we have an exciting card in store for our fans today? DB: Indeed we do Lance. The Fabulous Jackie Fargo and Tommy Gilbert will be teaming up to take on the Medics, the impressive youngster Kelly Kiniski will take on the veteran Burrhead Jones, Rugged Ronnie Garvin will square off against Bill Ash, and in out main event, Southern Tag Team Champions Tommy Rich and Ricky Fields will take on Phil Hickerson and Dennis Condrey in a non-title match up. We will also finally be hearing from former Southern Heavyweight Champion Jerry Jarrett. LR: He must have plenty to say. Sounds like a great program of action and we will be back with it all right after a word from our sponsors. -Commercial Break- LR: We’re ready to go today fans and glad you can be with us. Take it away Davy. Jackie Fargo and Tommy Gilbert defeat the Medics in a strong performance for the veterans as Tommy grinds down Medic #2 before Jackie finishes him off with his atomic knee drop. LR: Jackie Fargo, Tommy Gilbert, this is a very solid win for you here today on Championship Wrestling. TG: It sure is Lance, but I’ve gotta tell ya, it would be a whole lot sweeter if it were those no good Limeys Breaks and Rocco here to take that kind of beating. Those British Bruisers seem to think that they are the only ones who can put up a fight here in the CWA. Well, Jackie and I have been fighting each other since before those boys left grammar school. JF: But since Lord Raven has sent those two boys packing to the West Coast, seeking World Championship gold, we will take on any two other men you want to toss out there Raven. Campbell, Roach, or even you, it don’t matter. Anywhere in this territory, Tommy and I will be happy to show you what real Southern men can do to the likes of you. LR: Jackie Fargo, Tommy Gilbert, thanks for your time. We’ll be back after these words. -Commercial Break- LR: Fans, as you heard at the top of the telecast, joining me now is a man we haven’t seen here on Championship Wrestling is quite a while. He is the former Southern Heavyweight Champion Jerry Jarrett. Jerry comes out to a rousing response from the studio audience. He waves, but looks a little long in the face. LR: Jerry, it’s good to have you out here and I understand you have something important to say. JJ: That I do Lance. A few weeks back, Ron Bass decided to try and put me out of wrestling permanently by working on the one part of the body no wrestler can really protect: the back. In the Louisville Gardens, he hit me with one of the most bone rattling back breakers I’ve ever felt. I staggered to the back after the match, but something didn’t quite feel right. I went on to the Mid-South Coliseum and in that brutal fence match, he didn’t just hit me with one more back breaker. He didn’t stop at two or three back breakers, but he dropped me with that back breaker four times. Now Lance, you’ve seen what one back breaker can do to a trained wrestler. Two back breakers have been known to stop the strongest men in this sport. But Ron Bass tried to cripple me with FOUR back breakers. I was so beat up that they had to take me into the hospital for observation and X-rays. Do you know what the doctors told me? They told me “Mr. Jarrett, you are lucky you are still able to walk.” They told me, “Mr. Jarret, you’re lucky you still have use of your arms.” They told me, “Mr. Jarrett, you’re lucky you still have control of your bowels because that man could have crippled you.” Lance Russell, those doctors told me to take the next 4 months off in the hopes I can someday wrestle again. I was told that coming back any sooner would not only be putting my career in jeopardy, but also my life. LR: Jerry, that has to have been some of the hardest news you have ever had to hear in your life. JJ: It was Lance, but I have to tell you, the harder thing to hear was my boy coming in and asking if I could come out and play with him and thinking that if Ron Bass had hit one more back breaker, I’d never be able to throw a ball or even hug my boy again. Lance, right now I’d like to call two men out here: Jerry Lawler and Ron Garvin. Lawler comes out in his street clothes while Garvin comes out, ready to head to the ring. JJ: Guys, while I’ve been out, you two have done solid work trying to get the Southern Heavyweight Title around the waist of an honest champion. Now, as the former champion, I’ve got a guaranteed rematch for the title, but I can’t use it in the 30 day since I lost the belt. I’ve had to do a lot of thinking and I’ve decided that I want one of you to have this shot at Ron Bass. JL: Jerry, I know I can speak for Ronnie here and tell you that whomever you choose will do his best to get that Southern Heavyweight Title and make Ron Bass pay for putting you on the shelf for 4 months. JJ: I’m glad you feel that way King, because I’m gonna give my rematch to Ron Garvin. The audience gasps and Garvin shakes Jarrett’s hand. JL: Wait one second Jarrett! Ron Garvin has had his shot at Bass and he dropped the ball. Yamamoto has put roadblocks in my way and I’ve yet to get my shot at the Southern Heavyweight Title. You know I can beat Ron Bass. I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again. JJ: Jerry you said it. Ron had a chance and had Bass beat too. That’s why he gets my rematch and that is why I’m asking you to shake his hand. If Ron can’t do it, you still have a shot. Now shake his hand. Lawler scowls but reluctantly shakes the hand of Ron Garvin and then abruptly walks off. LR: Ron Garvin will get another shot at Ron Bass and the Southern Heavyweight Title fans, thanks to Jerry Jarrett. Jerry, we wish you a speedy recovery and Ron, we’ll see you in action later. We’ll be back after these messages. -Commercial Break- LR: We’re back fans, and Big Bill Howard is in the ring and he is set to face Sugar Bear Harris, but Tojo Yamamoto, I assume you want to respond to the comments of Jerry Jarrett. TY: Lance Russell, I want to tell you, and all the fools sitting at home to listen up. Jerry Jarrett, you had a shot at the Southern Heavyweight Championship and you handed it off to Ronnie Garvin. It might have been the smartest move you have ever made in your pitiful wrestling career. You don’t want to be a cripple. You don’t want to be a burden to your wife and family, because that is what will happen to you if you ever step back into the ring with the Outlaw Ron Bass. Ronnie Garvin, you not only accepted Jarrett’s title shot, but you accepted his fate. He was going to be broken in the ring. Now it will be you. LR: I notice that you have your man, Sugar Bear Harris, with you. TY: This warning goes out to the other Jerry in the CWA. Jerry Lawler, you have never beaten this man cleanly. Feet on the ropes, a loaded fist, every time you take a short cut Lawler and the massive Sugar Bear will not stand for it. Not only can you not follow the rules of wrestling, but you can’t even execute one of the most basic maneuvers in this sport on this man, the body slam. So Lawler, take notes because until you can body slam, until ANY man can body slam Sugar Bear Harris, you will not get a glimpse of the Southern Heavyweight title. And to sweeten the pot, I’m going to put $500 into a pot every time Sugar Bear Harris goes through a singles match a comes out without being body slammed. Bill Howard, go ahead and try to make a quick five bills. LR: I guess that is what Bill Howard is waiting for. Over to you Davy. Sugar Bear Harris pummels Big Bill Howard in this body slam challenge before hitting his big running splash in the corner and slamming Big Bill in the center of the ring. LR: A crushing defeat for Bill Howard at the hands of Sugar Bear Harris. I’m not sure that Bill even could try to body slam him. We’ll be back after these messages. -Commercial Break- LR: More action set to go in the ring fans. Take it away Davy. Kelly Kiniski defeats Burrhead Jones in a scientific contest following a big Canadian back breaker. After the match, Lord John Raven and Black Angus Campbell appear in the interview area. LJR: Lance Russell, say nothing or I will loose this man upon you and your broadcast colleague and this will be the shortest telecast the CWA has ever aired. Kelly Kiniski, you have worked your way onto the radar of the BBC. We are always looking for talent so keep it under advisement that the BBC is always looking for the best wrestlers from the British Commonwealth. I understand you have a match with this man scheduled for the Mid-South Coliseum. You are stepping up against a real wrestler and the BBC doesn’t want to see you get hurt. Kelly hops down from the ring and steps into the interview area KK: Lord Raven, with all due respect, I’m not wrestling in Canada to keep out of my father’s shadow and I don’t need you telling me what is in my best interest. Black Angus Campbell, you are a very tough man, but you will find out what Canada’s best can really do. Kelly turns to walk off, but Campbell clotheslines him from behind and starts clubbing away at the young Canadian. Angus then slams Kelly headfirst into the ring post and wails away with lefts and rights until Lord Raven calls his man off, leaving Kiniski a bloody mess. LR: Folks, we need some medical personnel out here to take care of Kelly Kiniski. We’ll hope to have an update after these messages. -Commercial Break- LR: Folks, medical personnel have taken Kelly Kiniski back to the locker room and are examining him there. We’ve got an impressive contest, could main event anywhere across the region fans, set to go in the ring. Take it away Davy. “Rugged” Ronnie Garvin defeats “Professor” Bill Ash after a nice sunset flip. Tojo Yamamoto was at ringside and early on was involved for his man, but from the locker room came “Superstar” Bill Dundee and that kept Yamamoto honest until the end. After the match, Ron Garvin and Bill Dundee step over to the interview area. LR: Ronnie, Bill Dundee, welcome back. BD: Ya know Lance, Bill Ash seems to think he’s got more important things to do than face off with me one on one. He seems to think that if he hands the Southern tag team titles to that fraud Yamamoto, he’ll show he is the best Junior Heavyweight in the CWA. I hate to break it to you Ash, but you can’t be the best until you beat me in the ring. LR: Speaking of a battle of the best, Ron Garvin, you have been handed the title shot against Outlaw Ron Bass. RG: Tojo, I see you aren’t out with your fish bowl because even you knew that the lots have been drawn and the die has been cast. Ron Bass, you keep slipping by me, but you aren’t getting past me Monday night. LR: A promise by Ronnie Garvin fans, and we’ll be right back with our main event right after these messages. -Commercial Break- LR: Main event time wrestling fans and it is a non-title contest here between the Southern Tag Team Champions, “Rapid” Ricky Fields and “Wildfire” Tommy Rich, and the impressive pairing of Dennis Condrey and Phil Hickerson. All four men are ready in the ring and we only have television time remaining, so take it away Davy. Under the direction of the Miser, Phil Hickerson and Dennis Condrey defeat the Southern tag team champions Rich and Fields after Phil catches Tommy with a double underhook pile driver after the Miser threw powder into the eyes of Rich, who was starting to get momentum shifted. Dennis and Phil hustle with their manager over to the interview area. M: Lance Russell, hold your tongue and listen up. My men, my investment, have just shown why they are the ones that should be getting their shot at the AWA Southern Tag Team titles. They have beaten Rich and Fields. They have beaten Montez and Jaggers, and we aren’t afraid of men like the British goons or Yamamoto’s fools. To the CWA championship committee, give us the contracts, make the deal or they will run over the tag team division like a express train through Memphis. LR: Dennis Condrey and Phil Hickerson have made a real statement here today fans. We will see you next week for more Championship Wrestling. For Dave Brown, I’m Lance Russell. See you next time.
