AWA International TV 7/21/77 (Duke fires someone!)
Aug 1st, 2007, 10:27am

AWA International Wrestling TV 7/21/77

Taped: Wednesday July 18, 1977
Broadcast Date: Saturday July 21, 1977

All matches sanctioned by the American Wrestling Association.
Referees for today's program: Andre Roy and Adrian Desbois

- In a match not filmed for television, International Tag Team Champions Kurt & Karl Von Brauner defeated Daniel Martel & Rick McGraw when Karl pinned Martel after a double clothesline.

TV INTRO

Jack Curran and Jack Britton welcome the fans to another great program of International Wrestling. They make mention that TV Champion Mad Dog Lefebvre has drawn Billy Two Rivers as his opponent and challenger for today’s program.

Major Duke George makes his way out and talks about two major announcements that he has for us this week. One will be the hiring of a new acquisition, the other will be the FIRING of a current member of the army. The Major says that one man has been causing all the problems in his army and today that man will be F-I-R-E-D! But he will get to that later on today’s program, it’s not a concern of his at the moment. Right now he would like to bring out his newest protégé.

Duke goes to the back and comes back out with a rather large wild man carrying a prehistoric sized bone. The Major announces the mastodon as Eric the Red!

Major: “Eric the Red is here for one sole purpose, to wreak havoc on the entire promotion. He is the wild man I have been looking for, he’s not here for money or gold, but to do my bidding. And that means ANYTHING I want.  He beckons to my call only, for I hold the whistle that controls him. The only time this man can be controlled is when he is under the spell of the owner of this whistle right here.”

The Major holds up a dog like whistle, slightly larger in size, and blows it. Eric behaves as though he hears a noise and follows George off the screen.

Britton & Curran don’t know what to make of this but admit that this Eric the Red looks like a very dangerous creature.

They then begin to wonder who on Earth could the Major be firing?!?!?

Bout 1: Jacques Rougeau Jr. defeated Fred Peloquin in 4:30 after a pair of dropkicks and a back suplex.

After the match Jacques mentions he has a bout coming up in a couple weeks time where he will receive a shot at the AWA World Jr. Heavyweight Championship. Young Rougeau says he feels prepared for the champion, Roddy Piper.

We will hear from Roddy Piper later today fans. And we still have to wonder, who is the Major looking to 86 before this programs end?

As we fade back to action, “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe is out, still gloating about his win over and subsequent elimination of Serge Dumont from International Wrestling. The Pretty Boy says there’s no way Dumont will ever recover from the Texas Death Match they had a couple weeks back. Jack Curran then asks Sharpe about the man that aided Larry in the win on that night. Sharpe said he promised to reveal the identity of his friend and calls him out to ringside.

Out walks the blond man in pretty nice physical condition. Sharpe talks about knowing this man for years, growing up together. Pretty Boy calls him his blood brother, Mr. TNT himself…..”Dynamite” Jack Evans!

Jack Evans gets on the stick and bad mouths Dumont, Curran and Canada as a whole. Evans says he always thought it was weird that half of Canada thought they were Americans and half thought they were French. He said he understood the ones that wanted to cross the border and be US citizens, but never cared for the ones that were “light in the loafers” and wanted to drink wine and eat cheese. Evans says he is prepared for his first match here on today’s program.

Bout 2: “Dynamite” Jack Evans (w/Larry Sharpe) defeated Greg Peterson with a gordbuster suplex in 4:00

After the match Sharpe entered the ring to raise Evans arm in victory. The pair seemed to be very in synch with one another throughout the contest. The Pretty Boy worked well as an outside coach. These two together could spell trouble for everyone else in International Wrestling.

It’s interview time ladies and gents.

First out we see film footage of an interview by AWA World Jr. Heavyweight Champion, Roddy Piper. (Note: I originally anticipated to write this interview and had half of it done, but time just hasn’t permitted me to give Piper the proper time he deserves so I am editing this and want to note future Piper interviews will be in detail.)

Roddy gets on the microphone and talks garbage on the entire Rougeau family. Piper says he understand the youngest of the clan of Canadian cockroaches has earned a title shot. Piper says if nepotism is earning then he guesses Jacques does deserve a shot. Piper talks about his good friend and confidant Major Duke George, and how the Major will manage his business and finances while Piper is in the area. Roddy says when he gets to the Forum, for Jacques not to bother to pack a lunch, it’ll be a short night…

Jack Curran then mentions that Roddy Piper will be HERE on the television program NEXT WEEK!

Our next interview is with Raymond Rougeau and Jacques Rougeau Sr. The Rougeau’s make a quick comment about Roddy Piper’s words before getting back to more important things.

Firstly they note that this coming Monday it will be Raymond and Jacques Senior in the ring again Major Duke George & one of his men. This bout will occur due to a win the Rougeau Brothers got on last Monday’s Montreal event. Jacques Senior is looking very forward to getting in the ring against George, it has been a long time coming.

Raymond then focuses on his match against Paul LeDuc on the 6th of August for the Quebec Heavyweight Championship. Rougeau says he has been training hard in order to prepare for his rematch. He knows LeDuc is a tough man to beat, but Raymond knows he can do it. Rougeau looks to recapture the gold he calls his on the 6th at the Forum.

Britton notes Paul LeDuc is not here this week because he is in preparation himself, only instead of exercising his mouth on TV like Ray, he is in the gym getting fit for the title match. LeDuc will be here next week in a warm up match, to get ready for the Forum card on the 6th.

Bout 3: Television Champion Mad Dog Lefebvre (w/Major Duke) defeated Billy Two Rivers in 5:00 with a powerslam. At one point in the match The Major almost inadvertently cost Lefebvre the title, accidentally distracting the champion by giving him orders on what to do to Two Rivers next. The Mad Dog recovered from this mishap and still got the win with his devastating powerslam.

Speculation begins to run rampant amongst the fans and Curran & Britton, because when we come back we will talk to the Major and find out who it is he is planning to fire.

The moment of truth has arrived and Major Duke George is out with Mad Dog Lefebvre & The Hangman. The Major clears up any confusion as to whether it may be the Quebec Heavyweight Champion Paul LeDuc, by saying only a fool would fire the top champion of the promotion. The Major makes note he will NOT be firing Paul LeDuc nor his newest acquisition Eric the Red. Which only leaves two….

The Hangman & Lefebvre begin to look at each other, wondering who is getting the axe.  Curran puts over both men’s attributes but also mentions flaws in both men. The Major feels he can help fix one man’s flaws, but the other is hopeless. At this point the Major names THE HANGMAN as the one who is fired. The Hangman appears very shocked and doesn’t seem to want to leave the ring, but George tells him to leave or that there would be consequences.

Curran thinks it may do the Hangman some good to come into his own.

The Hangman slowly walks towards the ropes as The Major begins to turn the Mad Dog’s attention towards him. The Hangman does a 180, turns around and CLOBBERS Mad Dog Lefebvre from behind! The Hangman puts the boots to Lefebvre as Major Duke looks on with a shocked look on his face.

The Hangman stops for a moment and looks at the Major….The Major’s shocked look slowly morphs into a smile! IT WAS A SET UP! But Why??? The Hangman and Duke then both begin to put the boots to Lefebvre!

Why on Earth is The Major doing this to his long time mercenary Mad Dog Lefebvre? Duke instructs the Hangman to pick up Lefebvre, the Major then slaps the taste out of the Mad Dog’s mouth, which only enrages the television champion! Lefebvre fires back on both men!

The groggy Lefebvre throws the Hangman from the ring and corners the Major, who is on his knees in the corner. The Major begins blowing his whistle looking for any help he can get. The Mad Dog turns around just in time to be clocked between the eyes by the giant sized bone carried by Eric the Red!

Eric the Red begins to pound on Lefebvre who is now pouring blood from the blow given from the bone. Eric the Red begins to choke Lefebvre with the bone while George yells some not so nice words to the TV champion. The Hangman is back in and puts the boots to Lefebvre.

This brings out the Rougeau Brothers and their father, who run off George and his goons. The Major has to pull at Eric the Red to get him to leave the ring, he doesn’t seem to fear anything. The whistle finally gets the Red to leave ringside.

Raymond Rougeau, a former nemesis of Lefebvre, even appears to be concerned of the champs well being, and check on the Mad Dog as we go to commercial.

Curran can not seem to grasp what we just witnessed here.

Back from commercials, all Britton & Curran can talk about is what just went down before break. The Major turning on Lefebvre like that, Eric the Red bloodying the TV champion. Next week we are promised ALL of the answers by the Major as to why this was done.

- Also next week, AWA World Jr. Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper will join us.

- We will have an update on Television Champion Mad Dog Lefebvre.

- Quebec Heavyweight Champion Paul LeDuc in a warm up match.

- Our feature match will see Frenchie Martin battle Karl Von Brauner!

All of that plus much more next week on AWA International Wrestling!

Lefebvre getting the boot was a surprise.

I can't imagine what it was like to see the Rougeaus come to help.

Evans and Sharpe will be a tough team. Dumpnt may not be out, though.

I love the action in International.

I basically formed a tag team in Sharpe & Evans that actually did exist IRL way back when. They're going to work in both singles & tags quite a bit.

I have been doing my best for over a month to throw everyone off on the Lefebvre baby face turn. Everyone thought it would be the Hangman, but if you go back, you can see the seeds of what led to Mad Dog becoming one of the "good guys"

Thanks as always for your support!

I really thought it was going to be Hangman, particularly because Lefebvre is a Champion, so I figured Duke would rather have him in his stable.

It'll be interesting to see the Mad Dog as a babyface now.  I know one thing, I wouldn't want to be Duke or his guys right about now!  Grin
