NWA Amarillo Sports Arena (8/2)
Aug 2nd, 2007, 3:27pm

August 2, 1977
Amarillo, Texas
The Sports Arena

1- THE KOZAK BROTHERS + HANGMAN HARRIS V LANNY POFFO + SATORU SAYAMA + SKIP YOUNG- The story of the match was how powerful and dominant young Hangman Harris looked in his Amarillo debut. Harris over-powered all three of his opponents but his partners couldn't extend the dominance when they were in the ring and that cost Harris and the Kozaks the match. Lanny Poffo gets the win after a reverse splash off the second rope on Nick Kozak. Poffo looked impressive, in advance of his match this Saturday on TV with Dick Murdoch against the Anderson Brothers.

2- MIKE JACKSON V FRANK DALTON- Jackson is one of the best Junior Heavyweight wrestlers in the world today and he takes dominance with his impressive technical wrestling skill. Dalton has some success, but Mike Jackson is able to put him away with a sunset flip off the top rope.

3- JERRY OATES + PAUL ORNDROFF V THE AUSTRALIANS w/ Steve Rackman- Oates and Orndorff have natural timing as a team since Jerry helped to break Paul into the sport of professional wrestling. Oates struggles however after he is double-teamed by The Australians, who then isolate Jerry and prevent him from making the tag for several minutes and do a lot to injure Oates' right leg. Eventually Jerry Oates is able to knock Larry O'Dea away and make the big tag to Paul Orndorff, who comes in and cleans house on both Australians and their manager Steve Rackman. Orndorff is able to get the win after driving Ron Miller into the canvas with a big powerslam. After the match, Jerry Oates is having a lot of problems standing on his right leg and has to be helped to the back by Orndorff and the referee.

4- LOSER MUST BE TARRED & FEATHERED- DENNIS STAMP V CHOI SUN- Sun comes into this match looking for revenge and charges into the ring, but Stamp immediately bails to the outside. Choi Sun tries to give chase, but it back fires as Stamp catches him with a clothesline as Sun tries to get to the floor. The two men brawl for several minutes before Dennis Stamps looks to finish things with a Texas Lariat. However, Choi Sun ducks out of the way and then drills Stamp with a karate kick to the chin that knocks Dennis out cold, allowing Choi Sun to get the win. Mike Jackson, Lanny Poffo and Paul Orndorff come out afterwards and corner Stamp. Choi Sun approaches from behind and dumps a vat of tar over Dennis Stamp's head. Dennis is covered from head to toe and as he storms around the outside area, Paul Orndorff hands Choi Sun a bag of feathers. Sun then dumps the feathers over Dennis Stamp and Dennis goes running to the dressing room area screaming. Choi Sun has gotten the revenge he wanted so badly, tonight!

5- GIANT BABA & THE MONGOLIAN STOMPER w/ Wild Bull Curry V CHRIS TAYLOR & CYCLONE NEGRO- This one is a malfunction in the Junction folks because these four tear each other apart as soon as the bell is rung. All four men do damage and it looks like nobody's safe with these four men battling each other. The conclusion of the match has Cyclone Negro and The Mongolian Stomper brawling up the aisle while Chris Taylor sets Giant Baba up for a belly-to-belly suplex. However, Baba blocks the move and body-slams the four-hundred and fifteen pound former Olympian. Giant Baba then uncharacteristically goes up to the second rope and comes crashing down with a boot on Chris Taylor's throat! Taylor is gasping for air as Giant Baba then hits a big leg drop and makes the pin, which Chris Taylor cannot kick out of giving Baba and The Stomper the win. After the match, Wild Bull Curry orders Giant Baba to continue the punishment, but out comes Western States Heavyweight Champion Dick Murdoch with a steel chair. He drives the chair over Giant Baba's back and sends the Japanese giant to the outside. Wild Bull Curry and The Mongolian Stomper have to told Giant Baba back and eventually drag him to the dressing room. Murdoch and Cyclone Negro help Chris Taylor to the dressing room area.

6- WESTERN STATES TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP- GINO HERNANDEZ + JERRY BRISCO w/ Bobby Davis V JOSE LOTHARIO + ANDRE THE GIANT- The fans go wild as Andre and Lothario make their way down to the ring. Once the match begins, Andre tosses both Hernandez and Brisco around the ring for a few minutes before tagging Super Sock into the match. Jose Lothario comes in and decks both of his opponents and then knocks their heads together. However, as he bounces off the ropes for a cross-body block, Bobby Davis reaches in and grabs his leg. Jose pulls Davis up onto the apron and is about to blast him, when Gino knees him from behind and suplexes him to the canvas. Hernandez and Brisco beat up Jose Lothario for the next several minutes by making quick tags in and out and liberally bending each and every wrestling rule. Late in the contest, Wild Bull Curry leads a man out that is covered in a black robe and some kind of crazy mask with only one opening, which is a mouth opening. All the while, Gino Hernandez and Jerry Brisco double-team Jose Lothario, until Andre The Giant has seen enough. Andre storms into the ring and headbutts both Gino Hernandez and Jerry Brisco, but the referee reprimands him and orders him to the outside. While the referee is tied up with Andre, Jose Lothario tries to pull himself up using the ropes. But once he gets to his knees, the man wearing the crazy mask takes it off to reveal A MAN WITH HIS FACE PAINTED GREEN AND RED! THE MAN THEN BLOWS RED MIST INTO JOSE LOTHARIO'S EYES! And the referee didn't see anything because he was tied up with Andre, but The Giant sure saw it and he jumps out to the floor and tries to catch this mysterious man that Bobby Davis had promised to bring to Amarillo. Jose Lothario is writhing around on the canvas screaming that he's been blinded, but Gino shows no concern for his mentor and proceeds to drop and elbow on him and then cover him. The referee, having not seen what happened, had no choice but to count the pin, allowing Jerry Brisco and Gino Hernandez to retain their Western States Titles. Andre The Giant realizes what just happened and charges back to the ring, but Bobby Davis and his champions clear out and join this man with the painted face and Wild Bull Curry in the aisle way. All five villains leave to the dressing room, but in the ring Lothario is still screaming that he cannot see and has to be loaded onto a stretcher and hurried out of the Sports Arena. It looks like we may have seen the end of Jose Lothario tonight in Amarillo!

7- NWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP- TERRY FUNK V JACK BRISCO- Brisco and Funk lock up and there's a very serious vibe here in the Sports Arena because this match is for the richest prize in professional wrestling. Brisco seems too cocky in the early going and that comes back to haunt him as Terry Funk gains control and takes Jack down with a hip-toss. Funk bounces off the ropes and connects with a clothesline. Hethen then comes off the ropes again and connects with a running knee drop, butt he can't put Jack Brisco away, not by a long shot. Funk applies a headlock and really wrenches back on it for the next several minutes. Jack Brisco manages to get to the ropes and as he gets up Terry Funk charges, but Brisco moves and Funk crashes into the corner. Brisco comes off the ropes and hits with a forearm strike and goes for the cover, but he can't put the NWA World Heavyweight Champion away that easily. Jack Brisco has Terry Funk up and he drives him to the mat with a knee breaker and then drops a knee across the face of the World Heavyweight Champion. Brisco works over Terry Funk with a leg lock of sorts for the next ten minutes and he jaws with the fans as he wrenches back on the hold. Funk eventually manages to break free, but Brisco is one him yet again with a side headlock. Terry Funk manages to fight his way back to his feet and he breaks the hold, finally, with a series of elbow strikes to Jack Brisco's stomach. Brisco is dazed, but soon he is knocked over by a hard right hand from the NWA World Heavyweight Champion! Funk then grabs Brisco and hooks him from behind, scoops him up, and drives him into the mat with a back suplex. Terry Funk is clearly favoring the right leg that Jack Brisco was working on so effectively and he perches as Jack gets back to his feet. Funk goes for the Lou Thesz Press, but Brisco dives out of the way, sending Terry tumbling to the canvas. Funk is down and it looks like he landed on that right knee, which Brisco immediately notices and exploits. Brisco then pulls Funk into the center of the ring and then locks Terry in the Figure Four Leg Lock! There's nowhere for Terry Funk to go because he's locked right in the center of the ring, but he's valiantly fighting back and refuses to surrender. Jack Brisco continues to apply pressure and it looks like Terry is in absolute agony here! Terry extends his hands and is seemingly calling for the fans to rally, which they do. Despite being in enormous pain, Funk feeds on the energy of the fans and is able to turn the hold over, thus reversing the pressure. Brisco however is right by the ropes and he latches on to them, thus forcing Terry Funk to break the hold. We have just past the sixty minute mark and both men are down, but slowly getting back to their feet. Once their back up, Brisco connects with a right hand, which Funk returns in kind. They trade rights and lefts and then Brisco sweeps Funk's legs and goes to apply the Figure Four again. This time, Terry kicks him away and Brisco falls through the ropes to the outside of the ring. Funk takes a few moments to regroup as Brisco gets back onto the apron. Terry catches him with some rights and then goes to suplex Jack back into the ring, but Brisco blocks it and drives Funk's throat into the top rope. Terry Funk collapses to the canvas and now Brisco is back in and he's setting up for suplex of some kind. Funk counters and then somehow manages to lift Brisco into the air, bad leg and all, and then DRIVES HIM INTO THE CANVAS WITH A TEXAS BRAINBUSTER!!! Brisco is down and out and the NWA World Heavyweight Champion Terry Funk makes the cover for the three count!!! At 72 minutes, Terry Funk has pinned Jack Brisco to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Title in what will surely be remembered as classic match.

INTERMISSION

8- NWA INTERNATIONAL HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP- TEXAS DEATH MATCH- THE SUPER DESTROYER V DORY FUNK JR.- It's time for the match that will have huge ramifications on the wrestling world as a whole. Dory Funk Jr. is out first and he soaks in the applause of the crowd in what may be his final appearance in his hometown of Amarillo. Bobby Davis leads the Super Destroyer to the ring, but the Super Destroyer orders Davis to leave the ring before the match begins. Bobby Davis reluctantly agrees and heads to the dressing room area. Funk and SD meet in the center of the ring after the bell is rung and talk some smack back and forth. SD slaps Funk across the face and Dory returns the favor with a hard slap that can be heard from the last row in the Sports Arena. SD knees Dory in the gut and then chops him in the throat. Dory fights back with some right hooks and then scoop-slams the International Heavyweight Champion. Funk stomps on SD's neck and tries to apply a neck-lock, probably just to soften up the neck since submissions will not garner a win in this match. Funk now has SD's neck over the middle rope and he jumps up and drives his knee into the back of the Super Destroyer's neck over and over again. Funk drags SD back into the center of the ring and goes for the cover, but Super Destroyer kicks out and then manages to jab Funk in the throat with something. Dory rolls over and gasps for breath as the Super Destroyer gets back up and kicks Funk right in the face. Super Destroyer comes off the ropes and lays in with another kick, this time sends Dory sprawling out to the floor. Dory uses the rails to pull himself up, but Super Destroyer leaps off the ring apron with an open-handed strike to the throat. SD then grabs Dorr by the neck and throws him head-first into the ring post and we can instantly see it has opened up a cut on Dory's forehead. Super Destroyer grabs him yet again and throws him head-first into the post for the second time and Funk collapses to the ground. Super Destroyer throws Dory back into the ring and then climbs up to the second rope. SD comes down with a stomp onto Dory's forehead and the blood flows even more! SD makes the cover and gets the count for the one, two, three!! Super Destroyer has pinned Dory Funk Jr. and now Dory has a ten count to get back to his feet or this match is over. The official begins his count….

8…DORY IS BACK UP TO HIS FEET!!!

The Super Destroyer is right on Dory, but somehow Funk buries a forearm right into the SD's stomach and then uppercuts him with that same forearm. SD staggers back and Dory kicks him in the gut, grabs his mask, and gives him some of his own medicine by throwing him head-first into the top of the post. As SD wobbles around, Dory hooks him into a double-arm suplex and then gets on top for the cover. The referee makes the count for the one, two, kickout! Super Destroyer has kicked out once again, but Dory is back up him slamming those knees into the back of SD's neck. The blood is still pouring out of the cut on Funk's forehead, but he will not let that stop him from extracting more punishment. Dory goes up to the second rope and looks for a knee drop to some kind, but SD rolls out of the way at the last second and hits the canvas. The Super Destroyer is very slow to his feet, but once he's back up and perches in the corner and waits as Dory slowly pulls himself back up. SD then charges and decks Funk with a big boot to the chin that sends Dory crashing to the mat. And now, SD adjusts the glove on his right hand and locks in the dreaded CLAWHOLD!!! Dory tries to fight his way out of it, but he can't break the hold and he eventually goes limp. Super Destroyer then covers Funk, with his right hand still gripped on Dory's face, and the referee makes the count for a one, two, three!! It doesn't look good for Dory Funk Jr. here because again he only has until the count of ten to get back to his feet or this match is over and he'll have to leave Amarillo forever.

The Super Destroyer is clearly frustrated and he slowly moves towards Dory, who decks him with a big right hand that rocks SD! The bloody and battered Dory Funk Jr. may be on his last legs here, but he refuses to stay down and he's fighting back with a vengeance. Funk once again grabs SD by the neck and hurls him into the post and now we can see blood trickling down the Super Destroyer's face through the eye and mouth holes on his mask. SD is wobbly and Dory is decking him with right hand after right hand and then pulls him into position. Funk lifts SD into the air and drives him into the canvas with a piledriver!!! THAT'S GOTTA BE IT, BUT DORY DOESN'T LOOK LIKE HE'S DONE YET!! Funk can barely stand on that injured leg but he pulls the SD in again and hooks into a SECOND PILEDRIVER!!! Funk makes the cover and the referee makes the count for the ONE….TWO….THREE!! Dory Funk has pinned the Super Destroyer and now it's SD who has a ten count to get to his feet.

Fever, with this card you have put your own distinctive stamp on Amarillo.

The twists and turns of both Funks were classic. I could picture the action in my head.
Brisco and SD have to admit the Funks were the better men here.

I love the undercard.

Oates and Orndorff are going to be a top notch tag team under your watch.

Loved the debut of the Oriental. Loooking forward to his reign of terror.

I am surprised that Baba had the strength to lift Taylor. Baba and Stomper better watch out. The whole locker room will go after them.

The tar and feather match was vintage Amarillo. Poor Stamp.

Great NWA action in Texas.

Even I will lower myself to congratulate Dory Stunk Jr and say it takes a real man to beat the Super Destroyer, but hopefully Funk will check recent history and realize that it is too bad the celebration will be cut short when Super D comes gunning to get his belt back a fourth time.

Dick Murdoch definitely made a cowardly "giant" sized mistake when he cheap shotted Baba with the chair. He caused the Honorable Baba-san to lose face, and I predict that very soon we will have a 8'9" Western States Heavyweight Champion.

It's too bad that Old Man Lothario, Super Suck, is now blinded for life, and wont be able to witness with his own eyes Gorgeous Gino outshining him in every way.

I am very glad that the four of you enjoyed the show. I was a little nervous with how it would be received as it isn't exactly what I had in my mind, but I'm glad to see it was enjoyable nonetheless.
