AWA-CWA 8/3/77 Nashville (Double Main Event!)
Aug 4th, 2007, 9:20am

AWA-CWA Wrestling
Live from the Civic Auditorium, Nashville, TN
Bell time 8/3/77 is 7:30 pm

1)      Former San Francisco 49’er George Welles defeats Bobby Jones with a big football tackle after a competitive match.

2)      Mighty Ursa defeats Don Ross in a battle between powerhouses that sees Ross spending more time flexing and complaining to the official than actually wrestling. When he does lock up, it appears that Ursa is simply playing with him, finishing off the match with a big bear hug.

3)      In a special 6-man tag team match the Spider, Dennis Condrey, and Phil Hickerson defeat Tito Montez, Bobby Jaggers, and Dutch Mantel by disqualification when, as all six men are brawling in the ring, Mantel pulls his bull whip off the ring post and starts flailing away at the Spider. Official Tommy Morton has no choice but to award the Miser’s men the match, but the Spider will be feeling the sting from Mantel for a few days.

4)      Kelly Kiniski defeats Black Angus Campbell by disqualification when Campbell refuses to break a blatant choke on Kiniski. Lord John Raven steps between his man and the official to allow for a little more abuse of the young Canadian, but when security is called to escort Campbell and Lord Raven to their locker room, Kelly attacks, pummeling Campbell until he has to be restrained by security to let the British duo escape.

5)      Big Bill Howard is the next man to fail in his attempt to bodyslam Sugar Bear Harris as the big man from Mississippi, under the direction of Tojo Yamamoto, defeats Howard with a big splash in the corner and a bodyslam of his own for good measure.

6)      After a brief intermission where it is announced that tonight will feature a special main event, Lord John Raven comes out in wrestling attire accompanied by a monstrous looking beast he calls his Scottish Giant, challenging any men in the back to try and take them on. From the back charge Tommy Gilbert and The Fabulous Jackie Fargo and the match is on. The Giant dominates the match, but twice in the match, Lord Raven tagged in and was almost pinned by the veterans. The end comes however when the Scottish Giant slams Fargo and then delivers a huge standing elbow drop that looks to crush Fargo. Lord Raven distracted Gilbert long enough for his man to get the 1-2-3. After the match, Tommy tries to beat the Giant off of Fargo, but only gets splashed in the corner for his trouble. Then, to add insult to possible injury, Lord Raven bullies the official, with the help of his Giant, to count a second pin fall as he covers Gilbert.

7)      “Superstar” Bill Dundee defeats “Professor” Bill Ash with the bombs away after a big brawling match. Both Ash and Dundee are trying to prove they are the top junior heavyweight in the CWA and on this night, it looks like Dundee is the man.

8)      In the billed main event, Ron Garvin defeats “Outlaw” Ron Bass by count out in a contest for the Southern Heavyweight Championship. Garvin looked in control the entire match, rocking Bass with lefts and rights, but the champion came close to finishing off Garvin as well, dropping him with a huge lariat, but a foot on the ropes and then repeated kick outs frustrated the champ. Finally, it was Garvin, after working on the legs of Bass and ready to lock on the figure four, who sees Tojo Yamamoto pull his man from the ring and drag him back to the locker room, belt in hand, as the referee count to ten and awards the match to Garvin.

9)      In a Special Main Event, The BBC duo of Jim Breaks and Marc Rocco defeat the AWA World tag Team Champions, Dick the Bruiser and the Crusher 1 fall to none in a best of three falls match for the AWA World Tag Team Championship. Lord Raven, slightly more disheveled from his earlier ring encounter, is at ringside for his men and his aid allows Breaks and Rocco to get the only fall of the match by baiting the Bruiser into attacking him in front of one of the ring posts and ramming his shoulder into the steel. Both Rocco and Breaks, giving up almost 50 pounds to each man, then work over that shoulder on the Bruiser, allowing Jim to lock on his patented inverted hammerlock to get a very rare thing, a submission from the Bruiser, at 25:03. For the remaining time in the 45-minute time limit, a combination of good teamwork from the Champions and a few mistakes from Break and Rocco allow the brawling duo of Midwest greats to come away with their belts in tact as the match was best of three falls.

Good show!

The mains were good but some clean pinfalls may have been better endings, especially with two in a row like that. Maybe do some non-title stuff to where somebody can go over more easily.

Looking at things, you're right  that some non-title matches would be the thing to do... I will probably do more of those in upcoming cards.

I think the non-finish though works more for the World Title match than the Southern Title match. I guess I'm running out of ways to have Bass lose without actually losing the belt. Non-title would have probably been a better way to go...

Loved the show. I would have liked to see some pinfalls also in the last two matches. But you did a great job with the show and it was a good read.

i'm a firm believer in clean pinfalls, though i don't use them all the time. but i try to. i feel it makes it more believeable. then again i grew up in MACW AD (After Dusty) so i am so against the screwjob "dusty finishes"...

main event was pretty good. too bad they didn't beat them old nobody's...(i know i'm gonna hear it about that one... Shocked)
sixman was good. too bad howard couldn't do the deed.

Can Garvin close the deal on Bass? Even at this time, I believe that the answer is yes.

The submission is more important to the Brits that the title win. You could really build off that.

The push of Kiniski is realy being well done here. Slow but sure.

Can anybody slam Harris?

Nice Welles with a win. Always he was underated.

Love that Montez is competitive in Memphis. Thank you.

Always love to read your stuff, Midwest. Sorry it took me so long to respond.

Looking around the finishes of those matches, this show was awesome. I really would have liked to of been there!
