AWA "Maple Leaf Wrestling" TV  8-4-77
Aug 4th, 2007, 5:29pm

Brought to you by Queensbury Athletic Club
Sanctioned by the American Wrestling Association

Saturday, August 4th, 1977
Airing across Canada on CHCH Channel 11 from 1pm to 2pm

Hosted by Lord Athol Layton
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

.
.
.
.
The opening plays, accompanied by Herb Alpert’s A Bandita.  We see short clips of some of the stars that have appeared on Maple Leaf Wrestling over the years, like Whipper Billy Watson, Gene Kiniski, Bruno Sammartino, Johnny Valentine, Jack Brisco and many more.

We then join Lord Athol Layton standing behind a podium with the Maple Leaf Wrestling logo on it, behind him, the Maple Leaf Wrestling logo and a big red and green Maple Leaf.

Lord Athol Layton runs down the matches that will take place on today’s program, including the feature bout, Billy Red Cloud & Whipper Watson, Jr. take on the masked Assassins.

MATCH #1 - 1 fall, 10 minute time limit:
Dino Bravo defeats Golden Boy Apollo after applying the Airplane Spin to Apollo, leading to the pinfall.

A masked man walks out, and joins Layton during the match.  He wears a white mask similar to the Crusader’s, except that it has a red maple leaf on each side.  His outfit is a mix of red and white.

Layton says that this man is known only as the masked Canadian, and he’ll be in action on Thursday night at Exhibition Stadium.

The masked Canadian says that he’s a big fan of Dino Bravo’s, and he has something he’d like to say to Bravo after the match.

After getting the pinfall, Bravo walks over.  The Canadian immediately offers his hand, he says that he’s a big fan of Bravo’s.  Dino smiles and shakes his hand.

Layton says that the Canadian said a few minutes ago that he had something to say to Bravo.

The Canadian says that he will make his television debut right here next week and would be honoured if Dino would be his tag team partner.

Bravo agrees, the two men then shake hands.

Layton asks Bravo about his match on Thursday night against the Midwest Champion BlackJack Mulligan.

Bravo says that they’ve both been out here, talking about how the match is going to go down.  But the time for talking is over, he says that on Thursday night, he’s going to climb into that ring and give 110% and hopefully, he’ll leave as the new AWA Midwest Champion!

MATCH #2 - 1 fall, 10 minute time limit:
The Sheik defeats Brian Mackney after locking Mackney in the Camel Clutch for the submission.

After the match, Eddie Creatchman and The Sheik walk over and join Layton on the set.

Creatchman says that Nick Bockwinkel is making a huge mistake, he says that Bockwinkel’s never been in the ring with someone like The Sheik, and no matter how much videotape he watches, no matter how much he prepares, there’s no way Bockwinkel can defeat this man!  He says that Sheik has been a dominant U.S. Champion, he’s steamrolled over anybody who’s challenged him for that title, and he is going to do the same thing on Thursday night, he’s going to run over Nick Bockwinkel, like a tank, and leave Exhibition Stadium as U.S. Champion AND World Heavyweight Champion!

Creatchman then says that he hopes Nick Bockwinkel was watching a moment ago, because what he did to that chump in the ring, well that’s just a small sample of what’s in store for the World Heavyweight Champion on Thursday night!

When we come back, Baron Von Raschke is standing in front of an AWA backdrop.

Baron Von Raschke says that The Crusader comes out here and calls him a coward, but it’s the Crusader who’s the real coward!  He says that he would never purposely get himself disqualified, he says that in other areas where he’s wrestled, they don’t have that over-the-top-rope rule, so he was unaware.  He says that the Crusader is a coward for hiding behind that rule, instead of defending his title like a man, he says that the Crusader was just looking for a way to get out of that match while still Champion!  He says that this just further proves what he’s been saying all along, that Canadian wrestlers are inferior to German wrestlers!

After the interview with Von Raschke is done, Greg Valentine walks over and joins Layton on the set.

Valentine says that, despite what Rufus R. Jones tells these people, the reason they wanted a tag team match was because he and Von Raschke got together and realized that they could kill two birds with one stone in a tag team match!  He says that if there’s anything left of Rufus after the tag team match this Thursday, he’d be more than happy to give him a one on one match.

MATCH #4 - 1 fall, 10 minute time limit:
Rufus R. Jones defeats Gary McLaughlin after nailing McLaughlin with a headbutt, leading to the pinfall.

After the match, Rufus walks over to the set, where he and Layton are joined by the Canadian Champion the Crusader.

Layton says that they have a very tough match ahead of them on Thursday night, a tag team match against Baron Von Raschke and Greg Valentine.  He says that they each have issues with those two men, this match should be an all-out war.

Rufus says that Greg Valentine put hard times on him and his family, he had no way of providing for his family, they were scraping just to get by.  He says that what Valentine is gonna pay for that!

The Crusader says that these are two very evil men.  He says that we’ve seen what both of them are capable of in the ring, they take pleasure in hurting and maiming their opponents, but it stops on Thursday night!  He says that he made a promise to himself and all of the great fans here in Toronto that he would clean up this sport, and that’s exactly what he intends to do…starting with Greg Valentine and Baron Von Raschke on Thursday night!

MATCH #5 - 1 fall, 10 minute time limit:
The Assassins defeat Billy Red Cloud & Whipper Watson, Jr. after George Cannon distracts the referee, and the illegal Assassin comes in, slips something into his mask, headbutts Red Cloud, then drapes his partner, who’s in rough shape, on top of Red Cloud, leading to the pinfall.

Layton: "That does it for another week of Maple Leaf Wrestling.  Next week, we'll have another action-packed hour of AWA wrestling for you.  On that show, Carlos Rocha will be in action, as will Greg Valentine and the young Native American Jay Youngblood.  The big feature match will see Dino Bravo team up with the masked Canadian to face the Assassins.  All that and a whole lot more, next week on Maple Leaf Wrestling.  Until then, I'm Lord Athol Layton, saying so long and we'll see you at ringside."

Jones and The Crusader will have their work cut out for them.

Hope that Bravo is not being suckered in by the man in the mask.

Sheik against Bock is going to be a different type of match that should be entertaining.

Great show.
