AWA in Toronto  8-9-77  SHEIK VS BOCK!
Aug 9th, 2007, 6:02pm

EXHIBITION STADIUM in TORONTO, ON

Presented by the Queensbury Athletic Club
Sanctioned by the American Wrestling Association

Thursday Night, August 9th, 1977
Belltime: 7:00pm

---------------------------------------------------------

Match #1 - 1 fall, 20 minute time limit
Steve Bolus
fought Mike Loren to a DRAW.

Match #2 - 1 fall, 20 minute time limit
Carlos Rocha & Billy Red Lyons
defeated Chris Tolos & The Wildman.
This was a pretty evenly-matched bout early on, but by the 10-minute mark, Lyons and Rocha had the match well in hand.  In the end, Rocha caught Tolos with a dropkick and pinned him.

Match #3 - 1 fall, 20 minute time limit
The Mongol
defeated Edouard Carpentier.
This match went back and forth for the most part.  Carpentier gained an early advantage, and nearly put the Mongol away, until a rake of the eyes put a stop to that.  In the end, Carpentier found himself on the mat, and the Mongol charged at him, planting a boot right between his eyes.  Carpentier was out like a light and the Mongol covered him for the pinfall.

Match #4 - 1 fall, 30 minute time limit
The Masked Assassins w/ George Cannon
defeated Bulldog Brower & Billy Red Cloud.
Brower and Red Cloud had the early advantage, but George Cannon constantly interfered in the match.  At one point, Cannon gets the attention of the referee and Brower.  When the Bulldog goes over to Cannon, the Assassins switch, bringing the fresh man in.  Neither Brower or the referee saw this, and the fresh Assassin attacks Brower from behind.  For the next several minutes, the Assassins keep Brower isolated in their corner.  Brower finally tags Red Cloud in, but constant double-teaming proves too much for him to overcome.  In the end, the Assassin on the apron removes his boot and hands it to the other Assassin.  While Cannon distracts the referee, the Assassin in the ring clobbers Red Cloud with the boot, then throws it back to the floor.  The referee turns back to the match and counts the pinfall, giving the Assassins yet another tainted victory!

Match #5 - 1 fall, 30 minute time limit
Mr. Wrestling
defeated "The Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff.
Koloff attacked the masked man before the bell rang, and proceeded to give him a vicious beating for the next few minutes.  Mr. Wrestling was groggy, but managed a comeback, and went for the kneelift.  Koloff saw this coming, and was able to avoid it, then hit a low blow on Mr. Wrestling to once again gain the advantage.  Koloff continued to pummel Mr. Wrestling, but when he went to the top rope for the kneedrop, Mr. Wrestling rolled out of the way at the very last second, and Koloff crashed into the mat!  Mr. Wrestling got up, and when Koloff staggered to his feet, Mr. Wrestling caught him with the kneelift, leading to the pinfall.

Match #6 - AWA MIDWEST HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH - 1 fall, 30 minute time limit
Dino Bravo (Challenger)
defeated BlackJack Mulligan (Champion) by DQ.
The two men meet in the middle of the ring, and exchange words.  Mulligan taunts his smaller opponent, but Bravo says something that sets Mulligan off, he shoves Bravo back.  Bravo shoves Mulligan back, causing Mulligan to unload on the challenger, nailing him with lefts and rights that leave Bravo on rubbery legs.  For the next few minutes, Mulligan completely dominates the match, and it seems that he could put Bravo away whenever he wanted.  When he finally goes for a cover, Bravo surprises everyone by kicking out.  Bravo then starts a comeback, and nails the big man from Eagle Pass, Texas with everything but the kitchen sink!  Mulligan is dazed, but won't go down...until Bravo catches him with a big running clothesline!  For the next few minutes, Bravo dominates the match, but can't keep Mulligan down.  In the end, Bravo has the match well in hand, and charges at Mulligan, who's just coming out of the corner.  Mulligan, thinking quickly, pulls the referee in front of him, and referee Tiger Tasker takes the full force of the Bravo clothesline!  With the referee down, the two men continue to brawl, but when Tasker finally regains his senses, he immediately calls for the bell, disqualifying Mulligan!

Match #7 - 1 fall, 60 minute time limit
The Crusader & Rufus R. Jones
defeated Baron Von Raschke & Greg Valentine.
Greg Valentine goes to start against the Crusader, but when the Crusader instead tags Rufus in, Valentine immediately tags the evil Baron in!  Valentine wants no part of Rufus R. Jones!  Throughout the entire match, Valentine does whatever he can to stay away from Rufus.  The only time he'll come in is if the Baron has worn Rufus down, then Valentine will come in and stomp away at him.  Finally, Rufus gets his hands on Valentine, after playing possum.  Valentine came in, and Rufus jumped up and grabbed ahold of him!  Rufus pummels Valentine, throwing him all around the ring like a ragdoll.  Late in the match, The Crusader comes in and squares off against Baron Von Raschke.  The momentum shifts back and forth, but in the end, Von Raschke whips the Canadian Champion into the corner, but as he charges after him, the Crusader hops up onto the 2nd rope and then comes off with a flying bodypress!  The Crusader comes down on top of Von Raschke and gets the pinfall!

Main Event - WORLD TITLE VS U.S. TITLE MATCH - 1 fall, 60 minute time limit
Nick Bockwinkel (World Champion)
defeated The Sheik w/ Eddie Creatchman (U.S. Champion) by DQ.
The two Champions tear right into each other as soon as the match begins.  Bockwinkel tries to keep it a wrestling match, but to no avail, The Sheik starts brawling almost immediately, and Bockwinkel realizes that if he wants to have a chance of winning, he'll have to fight fire with fire!  Bockwinkel shows that he can brawl with the best of them.  After several minutes, The Sheik produces a foreign object, it looks to be a pencil, and begins to jab Bockwinkel in the head.  He keeps it out of the referee's view, and within minutes, blood is flowing from a gash on the head of the World Heavyweight Champion.

Bockwinkel fights back though, he wipes the blood from his eyes, and continues to fight the U.S. Champion.  At one point, Bockwinkel gets the weapon from The Sheik, and starts jabbing the Noble One with it!  Late in the match, Bockwinkel has taken control of the match, and begins to work on the knee of the U.S. Champion.  Out of desperation, The Sheik lets fly with a FIREBALL!  The referee immediately calls for the bell, disqualifying the United States Champion!  Bockwinkel wins the match, by DQ, but neither title changes hands.

Big win for The Mongol.

Valentine will have to answer to Rufus eventually.

The Sheik/ Bockwinkel match was really entertaining.

With the knee lift, was this Wrestling I or II?

Great Toronto action.

That's right, it was Mr. Wrestling II that used the kneelift, wasn't it?  Ah well, let's just say Woods picked this move up from II down in Georgia and decided to use it here!  Grin
