WWC TV 8/11/77 TAG TOURNEY FINALS
Aug 11th, 2007, 6:14am

WORLD WRESTLING COUNCIL
SUPERESTRELLAS DE LA LUCHE LIBRE
TAPED AT: WAPA-TV CHANNEL 4 STUDIOS
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO
TAPED: AUGUST 9, 1977
BROADCAST: AUGUST 11, 1977
REFEREE: TOMAS MARIN
ANNOUNCER: RICK ST. JAMES

Theme music is played and the WWC logo is super imposed over arena match action.

Rick St. James welcomes the crowd and the TV audience to the program. He says that today, the greatest wrestlers in the NWA will compete in the greatest matches for the greatest fans here in Puerto Rico.

St. James walks over to a bracket board and says that the tournament to determine the WWC North American Tag Team Champions is one match away from being complete. That match will be today at the Channel 4 studios. The contest will be Tony Garea and Dean Ho facing The Samoan Kings: King Curtis and High Chief Afi, managed by Mark Manson. This will be a brutal match, as is witnessed by some of the film from the tournament, which we will see today.

St. James says that the fans will see a rare World Championship match on television. Jerry Brisco will defend the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title against El Diablo Mascaras. Diablo Mascaras’ manager, Mark Manson, could have tons of gold in his stable before the day is out.

The Puerto Rican Heavyweight Champion, Gorilla Monsoon, will join us today as will a leading contender for that title, Gil Hayes. One team that was brutalized by the Samoan Kings, Victor Rivera and Hercules Ayala, join forces with Carlos Colon in a big six man bout.

St. James encourages the fans not to touch that dial as the World Junior Title bout is up next when “SUPERESTRELLAS DE LA LUCHE LIBRE” returns.

Film is shown from Coliseo Manuel Iguina in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. “The All-American” Don Kernodle is bloodied before he leaves the curtain area. He has been attacked by Mark Manson and El Diablo Mascaras. This weakens him and he submits to Diablo Mascaras’ camel clutch later in the match.

St. James says that Manson and his men have already blazed a bloody trail through WWC. There will be more evidence of that later in the show.

St. James acknowledges that some of the fans are familiar with Jerry Brisco from his work in Florida. They cheer the reigning champion as he comes to the ring. The whistles are out for the demonic looking Manson and his charge, El Diablo Mascaras, when they enter.

NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH
EL DIABLO MASCARAS w/ MARK MANSON vs. JERRY BRISCO (C)

The match is a counter fest that has the fans on their feet. Brisco focuses on the right knee of Diablo, while the masked man goes after Brisco’s back. A series of reverses of small packages ends with Brisco being thrown out of the ring. Manson takes a plastic fork out of his jeans and stabs Brisco with it. He opens the champ up.

Diablo Mascaras drops to the floor and poles Brisco. Manson is being checked by Marin because of the taunts of the fans. This allows Diablo Mascaras to pull out a coin from his boot and deepen the cut. He rolls Brisco back into the ring and locks on the camel clutch.

Despite great pain, Brisco makes the ropes. Marin tells Diablo to break; Manson tells him to keep it locked. Marin calls for the bell @ 8:29. Manson has an evil look on his face and he tells his charge to cinch down harder. The crowd roars as Carlos Colon clears the ring with chair. He checks on Brisco, as Manson tells the crowd, “He is not of the devil, he is of my Family.”

WINNER: JERRY BRISCO by DQ

The camera fades to black.

Film clips are shown from confrontations between Gil Hayes and Gorilla Monsoon. The first clip shows Monsoon and Hayes going out at the some time in the Russian Roulette Battle Royal in San Juan. The second clip shows Monsoon barely grabbing the ropes before a three count in a match later that night between the two. The third shows a controversial count out of Hayes in a tag match involving Monsoon.

St. James says that Gil Hayes has met some misfortune in his recent rivalry with Gorilla Monsoon. St. James says Hayes will join him for commentary for this next match featuring the Puerto Rican champion.

GORILLA MONSOON vs. JACK ARMSTRONG

Hayes comes to the interview desk with two beautiful women. They are rubbing their hands on his shoulders and in his hair throughout the match. Hayes says that one reason Monsoon won that title was that Rock Riddle was not in Puerto Rico to watch his back. That will change. The match itself is totally dominated by Monsoon, who puts Armstrong out with an airplane spin and a Manchurian splash @ 4:28

WINNER: GORILLA MONSOON

Hayes says that the ladies have volunteered to warm him up for his match next.

St. James goes to ringside to interview Monsoon. Monsoon says he heard Hayes and his ladies of the evening out here. He asks St. James if he can stay around and commentate during Hayes’ match in the interest of equal time. St. James welcomes Monsoon to take a seat and tells the fans that the temperatures in WWC are rising. The treatment will continue next.

A VTR airs with two different interviews. Tosh Togo, wearing his Oddjob derby, says Antonio Inoki is trying to dim his starlight by facing him in tag matches. Well, they will face each other one on one in those tag matches. A separate portion of the tape has Antonio Inoki saying that when a star gets older its light always dims. His ensiguri will eclipse the rising sun of Tosh Togo.

The show returns to the ring where Gil Hayes and Rock Riddle are waiting to start the match.

GIL HAYES w/ ROCK RIDDLE vs. THE AVENGER

Monsoon says how proud he is to be the Puerto Rican champion. He has seen the footage from earlier in the program and says he will face Hayes to remove any stigma of controversy. Hayes has his way with the masked Avenger. He taunts Monsoon with every move. He gets too cocky, though, as Avenger rolls Hayes up for a close two count. Hayes sweeps Avenger’s left leg and drops an elbow on the knee. He locks in the Indian Death Lock for the submission win @ 4:38.

WINNER: GIL HAYES w/ ROCK RIDDLE

After the match, Gil Hayes fakes wanting to go after Monsoon. Riddle acts like he is holding Hayes back. When Monsoon rises from his seat, Hayes and Riddle continue the act but they do it backing up.

St. James says Hayes may not like being Monsoon’s number one contender when all is said and done. The people’s favorites Colon, Ayala, and Rivera will be here in six man action when we return.

Film from the second night of the WWC North American Tag Title Tournament is shown. King Curtis pins Victor Rivera in what amounts to a handicap match in Bayamon because of a pre-match attack on Hercules Ayala by El Diablo Mascaras and Mark Manson.

St. James says that while Ayala is not completely recovered, he, Carlos Colon, and Rivera want to show the Manson stable that they are ready for extreme combat, WWC style.

CARLOS COLON/ HERCULES AYALA/ VICTOR RIVERA vs. LA PANTERA NEGRA/ SUPER GLADIATOR/ EL GUACHO

The faces hit the ring as the crowd goes wild. Rivera and Colon throw Gaucho and Negra through the middle ropes to the studio floor. They pole both wrestlers. Rivera and Colon slam both wrestlers on each other on the floor. In the ring, Ayala hits a power slam on Gladiator. He grabs the masked man in a bear hug and turns him toward Colon and Rivera. They hit a double drop kick on Super Gladiator. Colon scores the pin @ 3:23.

WINNERS: COLON/ AYALA/ RIVERA

The trio descends on the interview table.

Colon grabs the mike and says to Manson that they have the devil in them, too. Puerto Rican wrestling is some of the bloodiest in the world because it’s their house. Ayala says that Manson may look like demented but he is smart. They will fight fire with fire in a heartbeat. Rivera says what those fools will do with these odds is lose!

St. James says that Manson and his men could be on top of the heap if they win in the finals of the North American Tag Title Tournament coming up next.

A VTR airs featuring The Professional. The masked man says that Huracan Castillo may stick his nose in the business of the no-account fools her in Puerto Rico, but he is an American. We rule with no questions asked. You don’t tell me I have to wake anyone up from my sleeper. I will put it on you and keep anyone from waking you up.

St. James is interrupted by Mark Manson. He informs the announcer that the men he is advising are to be referred to as the Manson Mafia. They will own all the titles in WWC.

WWC NORTH AMERICAN TAG TEAM TOURNAMENTS FINALS
THE SAMOAN KINGS w/ MARK MANSON vs. TONY GAREA/ DEAN HO

The team from the NWA San Francisco territory takes it to the Kings early. Garea uses a series of Mexican leg whips to take down High Chief Afi. He works on the left leg and tags off to Ho. Dean drops a fist form the top rope into the left knee. He drops to the floor and slams the knee on the edge of the ring apron.

Manson gets the attention of Marin and Afi hits a low blow on Ho. He rams the Hawaiian into the turnbuckle. He then hits a belly-to-belly suplex. King Curtis tags in and begins to brutalize Ho. Marin has his hands full as Curtis bites, jabs, and manhandles the former WWWF tag champ. Ho hits a dropkick out of nowhere and Curtis is staggered. Ho makes the tag and Garea cleans house.

After several minutes of working on Curtis’ back, Garea tags Ho. He Irish whips Curtis into the rope and gets him in a bear hug. Ho is on the top turnbuckle and lands a missile dropkick. Curtis is down.

Manson gets Marin’s attention. Afi takes Garea to the floor. El Diablo Mascaras comes in and sprays some type of clear mist into Ho’s face. He pulls Curtis on top and rolls out of the ring. Marin makes the count of three @ 11:19.

WINNERS AND NEW WWC NORTH AMERICAN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS: THE SAMOAN KINGS

Colon, Ayala, and Rivera rush to the aid of Ho and Garea as the Manson Mafia gloats over their ill-gotten gains.

St. James tells the audience that the best wrestling comes from the best paradise-Puerto Rico. So long for now.
