AWA Championship Wrestling 8/11/77
Aug 14th, 2007, 4:36pm

AWA Championship Wrestling
Recorded and broadcast Live from the studios of Ch3, Memphis, TN
Shown on a 1 week tape delay in an edited format across the remainder of the territory

The theme to 2001 plays as a classic Greek statue is rotated 360 degrees with the words Championship Wrestling emblazoned over it. The scene then fades to Lance Russell and Dave Brown and the announce position.

LR: Wrestling fans, we’ve had a huge week of action across AWA Championship Wrestling and big announcements are coming fast and furious. I’m Lance Russell and along side me as always is Dave Brown. Dave, the first thing we have to say is there are new southern Tag Team Champions.

DB: That’s right Lance. Phil Hickerson and Dennis Condrey took the titles and we will see footage of their victory later on in this telecast. We also have a huge announcement of action coming up Labor Day Weekend.

LR: That’s right Davy, and a special guest in here to make that announcement. Also on today’s broadcast we have the King Jerry Lawler in action against Butch Malone, Dutch Mantel in action against Bobby Jones, and the Southern Heavyweight Champion, Outlaw” Ron Bass will be here to tell us who will finally face him for the title. We’ll get it all started, right after these words.

-Commercial Break-

LR: Fans, we are back, and we have a very special guest joining us and he has a very special announcement for all wrestling fans, not just in Memphis, but across the AWA. Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the AWA: Mr. Eddie Einhorn. Mr. Einhorn, welcome to Memphis and Championship Wrestling.

EE: Thank you Lance. It is a real pleasure to come to Memphis and make this special announcement. As you know, the Labor Day holiday weekend is coming up and it is usually seen as the end of the Summer. Well, on Labor Day afternoon, the AWA will be holding its End of Summer Spectacular, here in the Memphis Liberty Bowl. All three AWA World champions will defend their titles and both Southern Heavyweight and Tag Team Titles will be on the line.

LR: A huge day of action, to say the least.

EE: Well Lance, the AWA has a history of filling up some of this nation’s largest stadiums and we know that Memphis will do just that with the outstanding talent that is coming into town in the form of AWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Bockwinkel, World Junior Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper, and two men that have just been through this territory, World Tag Team Champions Dick the Bruiser and the Crusher.

LR: It will be a huge day of wrestling fans. And speaking of wrestling, we have action set to go in the ring so take it away Davy.

“Superstar“ Bill Dundee defeats Ken Dillenger with a bomb’s away. Dillenger looks competitive, but Bill is able to take control and finish off the opposition for the 1-2-3.

LR: A nice win for one of our top junior heavyweights. You can bet Bill Dundee is going to be gunning for a shot against the World Junior Heavyweight Champion. We’ll be back after these messages.

-Commercial Break-

LR: We’re back fans, but joining me now are what appear to be some very irate Englishmen…

Lord John Raven and all five of his men in the BBC step onto the interview set, surrounding Lance, with the 7 foot tall Scottish Giant towering over everyone.

LJR: You bloody well know I’m irate with the treatment the BBC has been receiving here in this God forsaken sweatbox you call a wrestling territory. Not only have my men Marc Rocco and Jim Breaks beaten those withered up has-beens the AWA calls its World Champions Dick the crusher and the Bruiser three nights in a row, but when we give the local lads a chance to try their skill against the team that is the real best in the business, we get jumped by two buggers hopping to the ring… Those two blighters there! Get the camera on them! You two…

The camera pans over the crowd and among the waving fans, two men dressed in track suits and wearing championship belts are seated near the front.

LJR: Roger Kirby! John Tolos! You boys cost us the Southern titles and had the gall to say that since you could blindside the BBC, you were the best tag team in wrestling. Well, how do you feel about fighting now boys? Angus, Pat help those boys into the ring…

Angus Campbell and Pat Roach make their way towards Kirby and Tolos with John and Roger stepping through the crowd and backing into the ring. Campbell and Roach try and go at them, but get clocked by the belts that were around the waists of the two unknowns, sending them crashing to the studio floor. Both Kirby and Tolos lay out their belts with Roger pointing and yelling that if the Brits want some real gold, they can try and take it.

LJR: Hold on mates. We’ll be happy to send you some competition. One of you boys verses one of the BBC. I’m certain we can get things to work out…

RK: But don’t you think you can do the same thing you did last week. That Scotch goon isn’t a part of this. Your boys what a shot at our gold, they have to do their own dirty work.

Lord Raven looks livid, but Rocco and Breaks try to calm him as Rocco volunteers to go against either Tolos or Kirby.

LR: It looks like we have an impromptu main event fans. It will be at the end of our broadcast, so let’s take a break and we’ll be back with more action.

-Commercial Break-

LR: Fans, we can finally get to action in the ring. Take it away Davy.

Dutch Mantel mauls Big Bobby Jones, just battering the man that outweighs him by more than 40 pounds.  Mantel drops Jones to end the match with a brain buster suplex before he gets the 1-2-3.

LR: Dutch Mantel with an impressive victory and he is joined by his partners Bobby Jaggers and Tito Montez. Dutch, I know you have something to say.

DM: That’s right Lance. Miser! You took one of the only things in my life that ever mattered to me when you laid your hands on my shoo baby. I toughened that rawhide by soaking it just right. When the Mantel home in Oil Trough, Texas caught fire when I was 17 years old. My momma told me to grab my most treasured possession and get out. I grabbed my shoo baby and ran. You have violated my shoo baby by layin’ a hand on her and stealing her from me. Spider. I’m gonna hunt you and your shaved gorilla of a manger down and beat you like a rented mule until I get my shoo baby back.

BJ: Miser, take a good look at the furry you’ve created. Take a hard look at the man that is going to bring down your whole rotten organization. Dutch has said he wants the Spider for himself, so that leaves Tito and I to take down the tag team champs.

TM: So Condrey and Hickerson, you may be the champions now, but you haven’t stopped us. Everywhere you go, you’ll have us to deal with. The Miser can try and duck us, but we will get a shot at those belts and we will bring the gold home.

DM: Spider! I can’t stand it! I want my shoo baby back and I’m gonna do whatever it takes to bring my baby home.

LR: Three determined men with tag team gold pushing them forward.  We’ll be back after these words from our sponsors.

-Commercial Break-

LR: Fans, we have with us one of your favorites, he is the King of Wrestling, Jerry Lawler.

The fans cheer loudly as the King comes out waving to the crowd.

LR: Jerry, it looks like you have finally earned a shot at Ron Bass and the Southern Heavyweight Championship.

JL: Lance Russell, I have to hand it to Tojo Yamamoto. He tried to put a roadblock in every turn for me on my way to getting the Southern Heavyweight title. But I knocked out Dr. D. I pinned the Sugar Bear and Monday night I put away the Professor. Butch Malone is looking to try and earn his way back into Tojo’s good graces by putting up a fight today, but you know just as well as I do that it just won’t happen. I am the man that is the top contender for the Southern Heavyweight Title and Ron Bass is just holding on to my belt for a while longer.

LR: With all due respect Jerry, Ron Garvin has yet to lose against the champion either over the past few weeks.

JL: I have to tell you something about Ron Garvin. Ron Garvin is a good wrestler. Heck, he is a very good wrestler, but he isn’t the King of wrestling. Ron Garvin on anyone any night in a main event and the crowd will be headed for the door before he final bell rings. You make a great challenger Ronnie, but you aren’t championship material like the King.

The crowd starts to boo as Butch Malone and Southern Heavyweight Champion Ron Bass make their way to the ring. Butch climbs into the ring while Bass stops in the interview area.

RB: You know something Lawler, every time you say something, it only sounds like hot air blowing past. You keep calling yourself the King of wrestling when everyone here knows you aren’t even the King of Memphis. Elvis Pressley is the King of Memphis and will be until he dies. And I know the King is as healthy as a horse and will be sitting on his throne until a goof, like you Lawler, is rolling in the ground.

JL: Keep talking Bass. You’re the next man to fall. Excuse me Lance, but I’ve got a check to earn.

Jerry Lawler defeats Butch Malone with a second rope fist drop. Lawler works quickly, keeping an eye always on Outlaw Ron Bass until he has picked up the 1-2-3.

LR: Jerry Lawler rolls on fans. We have the Southern Tag Team Champions up next fans. Stay with us.

-Commercial Break-

LR: The Southern Tag Team Champions are in the ring and they will face off against Big Bill Howard and Don Ross in this non-title contest. Take it away Davy.

Dennis Condrey and Phil Hickerson crush Howard and Ross as the champions first pound on Howard and then do the same to Don Ross, pounding the muscle man into the mat, dropping him thanks to Dennis connecting on an underhook  piledriver. After the match, the champs join their manager, the Miser at the interview area.

LR: Gentlemen, congratulations on your new title.

M: Take a good look Lance Russell. This will be a common sight for not weeks, not months, but years: Dennis Condrey and Phil Hickerson as the Southern Tag Team Champions. It doesn’t matter if its Rich and Fields, those British Baboons, or those dust covered derelicts Montez, Jaggers, or Mantel, we will stay the Southern Tag Team Champions through Labor Day and beyond. We are the top tag team in this territory and if you want to test our metal, come to the ring and see who’s got the gold.

LR: We have two other tag teams that are preparing to go after each other squaring off in the main event. It’s up after these messages.

-Commercial Break-

LR: We’re set to go in our main event. It’s TV time remaining and a shot at the NACW North American Tag Team titles is on the line. Take it away Davy.

In an exciting TV main event, “Maniac” Marc Rocco defeats “Nature Boy” Roger Kirby with a bridging suplex pin to get the BBC a shot at the North American Tag Titles Monday night in the Mid-South Coliseum. John Tolos was at ringside for his partner, but Jim Breaks and Lord Raven tilted the balance for the Brits outside and Rocco simply outwrestled Kirby inside the ring. Stiff shots from Marc and a diving headbutt set up the suplex and it was a 1-2-3 just as TV time was running out.

LR: The BBC has another title shot. It will be just one of the many exciting matches Monday night in the Mid-South Coliseum. For Dave Brown, I’m Lance Russell. See you next week for AWA Championship Wrestling.
