CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING FROM FLORIDA BACK-TO-SCHOOL SPECTACULAR ORLANDO SPORTS CENTER ORLANDO, FLORIDA AUGUST 17, 1977 7 PM REFEREE: FRENCHY BERNARD Promoted by: CWF Sanctioned by: NWA --National anthem Match 1- SIX MAN TAG WAHOO MCDANIEL / BOBBY EATON/ JIM BRUNZELL defeat BUDDY WOLFF/ HERCULES STEVENSON/ MACHO MAN JOHN RINGER. This selection features the youth of Eaton/ Brunzell and Stevenson/ Ringer in one chapter and the brutality of Wolff and McDaniel in another chapter. The match ends as Stevenson has McDaniel on the mat, giving him the confidence to go up to the top turnbuckle. McDaniel was playing possum and he catches Stevenson with a chop that turns him a flip. The Chief goes in for a butterfly suplex for the pin. Time: 18:56 Match 2- STRAP MATCH BOB ARMSTRONG defeats JIMMY GARVIN w/ THE GREAT BOLO (It is my personal preference to make strap matches about a pin or submission, not touching the four corners. I know that goes against NWA tradition, but that’s my preference.) Bolo uses a loaded mask and a head butt out of Bernard’s sight to open Armstrong up. Garvin uses his fists and the strap to open Armstrong up worse. In a desperation move, Armstrong runs Garvin into Bolo’s head when the manager jumps on the ring apron. Armstrong wraps the strap around Garvin’s neck and snaps his neck across the top rope by dropping to the floor. Armstrong follows up with a piledriver. He ties Garvin in the ropes. He uses the strap to make Garvin’s face a crimson mask. Finally, Armstrong hits another pile driver for the win. Time: 22:05 Match 3- AUSTIN IDOL defeats BUDDY COLT/ SIR OLIVER HUMPERDINK by DQ This match has some interesting stips, according the ring announcer. Idol must pin both men in order to win the contest. Humperdink and Colt must wrestle as a team. The match will have a 20:00 minute time limit. Idol argues to begin the contest. The Spoiler comes out with Humperdink and Colt. As Idol turns his back, Colt loads up his elbow pad and clobbers the back of Idol’s head with it. Humperdink whips Idol into the ropes and Colt hits a big body slam. The first few minutes has Colt working on Idol’s neck. Humperdink begs for the tag and Colt obliges. Humperdink tries a few stomps to Idol’s mid-section. Idol draws on the crowd’s energy and gets to his feet. He hooks Humperdink in a series of deep arm drags. Idol uses a reverse atomic drop, followed up with a flying clothesline. He goes for a pin. Colt comes and Idol hits a belly-to-belly on him. He goes back and pins Humperdink. Before Idol can pin Colt, Steve Strong comes in and knees him in the back. Strong hooks the swinging full nelson on Idol until ring security breaks up the attack. Time: 10:59 Match 4- FLORIDA HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH JACK BRISCO(C) defeats ANTONIO INOKI The crowd is solidly behind the reigning Florida champ. There are some supporters for Inoki, though there not very many boos for the Japanese star. The action comes several fast-paced spurts. Brisco stays on the right knee, while Inoki works on the shoulder and neck. During the middle part of this match, a man in a black robe comes out to ringside After a very intense exchange of moves that has Bernard getting hit, tempers flare and the match goes out to the floor. Both wrestlers run each other into the poles, but Inoki looks to take the advantage when he hits an ensiguri out of nowhere. Brisco is down. The man in the robe unloads on the exhausted Inoki and takes him to the opposite side of the ring. He applies a stomach claw to Inoki and rolls him into the ring. Bernard and Brisco recover in the ring at about the same time. The man in the robe is still. Brisco picks up Inoki and hits a power slam for the win. Time: 25:00 . . INTERMISSION . . Match 5- CAGE MATCH FOR THE FLORIDA TAG TEAM TITLES THE MANCHURIANS defeat STEVE KEIRN/ MIKE GRAHAM (C) Humperdink is not out with The Manchurians, quite possibly due to the injuries from the Idol match. This match goes on and The Manchurians are none the less for wear. The first prolonged advantage of the match comes when Graham gets trapped between the ropes and a cage wall. Tio charges in with two bone-jarring shoulder blocks. Graham’s ribs are hurt and the heels don’t let up. A missed elbow drop by Prince Tapu allows Graham to crawl to Keirn for a tag. Keirn runs Tapu’s head into the cage walls several times. He hits a high knee lift followed by a bull dog. A cover by Keirn is just barely kicked out of by Tapu. Keirn slaps on a rear chin lock to wear down Tapu and give Graham a chance to recover. Both teams get down and dirty and end up bloody. The injuries to Graham are a big part of the end of this match. Despite great pain, he goes up top for a flying body press. Tapu and Keirn are slamming away at each other on the floor. Tio manages to shake the ropes. Graham loses his balance but catches himself on the ropes. His torso is twisted awkwardly, though. Tio cinches in an octopus hold. Graham submits. Time: 28:20-New Champions Match 6- NWA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH JESSE VENTURA/ KEN PATERA (C) defeat MISSOURI MAULER/ STEVE STRONG The crowd gives Strong an intense reaction for his actions earlier in the Idol match. Ventura says that the opposition for him will not be a tired wrestler but the Ultimate Males of the NWA. Strong runs his mouth, motioning toward Patera to see who is the strongest. Patera and Strong start against each other. Tests of strength end up in Strong taking short cuts. Ventura is enraged and tries to come in. Bernard intervenes, allowing Mauler and Strong to work on Patera. After several minutes of the challengers working on Patera’s back, Ken manages to hip toss Mauler into his corner. He tags in Ventura, who hits several devastating shoulder tackles. Despite several rallies by Mauler and a tag that Bernard does not see or allow, Ventura hits a belly-to-back on Mauler. Patera runs over and knocks Strong off the apron. While Patera are slugging it out on the floor, Mauler is pinned by Ventura. Time: 24:00 Match 7- NWA HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH TERRY FUNK defeats THE SPOILER w/ BUDDY COLT Spoiler comes to the ring first. He waits stoically, as Funk is introduced. A few words are exchanged during the introductions. Both men shove each other and the bell rings. Both men throw the rule book out the window. This makes for a rugged and brutal match. Funk uses his branding iron outside the ring to cut the Spoiler’s mask and bust him open. Funk lifts Spoiler in a pile driver position on the floor. Bernard drops to the floor and tries to get Funk back into the ring. This allows Spoiler to back drop Funk to the floor. Spoiler runs Funk into a pole and clamps the claw on, while Funk’s head is jammed against the pole. Bernard gets back in the ring and starts the count. Spoiler rolls Funk into the ring. He re-applies the claw. Funk manages to get to his feet and fall back into the ropes. He hits a forearm to the grapefruits that staggers Spoiler back. Colt jumps to the apron. He complains to Bernard. Funk goes after Colt, knocking to the floor. Spoiler goes behind and tries to roll up Funk. Funk rolls through and grabs the ropes for extra leverage. Spoiler is pinned. Time: 26:29 The lights in the arena are cut off and then the house lights come on. Match 8- LIGHTS OUT MATCH LOSER LEAVES THE STATE OF FLORIDA FOR 90 DAYS DUSTY RHODES vs. THE ASSASSIN The announcer says since neither the CWF or the NWA are sanctioning this match, the referee will only count pin falls. There will be no counts, no DQ, and no time limit. Dusty brings out a chain and opens the masked TV champ up. Rhodes ties up Assassin in the ropes and chokes him. In desperation, Assassin kicks Rhodes in the nether regions. He manages to free himself and loads his mask. He body slams Rhodes and hits a falling head butt. Assassin repeats this series of moves twice more. The rest of the match goes all over the ring area. Assassin takes a film cable, wraps it around the feet of Rhodes, and hangs Stardust from the middle rope. Knee drops to Rhodes’ nose has the Dream on the verge of defeat. Nelson Royal comes out to argue with The Assassin. Bernard frees Rhodes and Dusty goes for a running clothesline. Assassin ducks and Rhodes takes out Royal. Dusty checks on his friend, giving Assassin a chance to hit a loaded head but from behind. The match ends back in the ring, where Rhodes is making a comeback. Nelson Royal pulls something from his boot, goes into the ring, and taps Rhodes on the shoulder. When Rhodes turns around, Royal puts a cloth on Rhodes face. Rhodes goes out. Royal tells Assassin to cover him. Assassin does just that. The crowd showers Royal with concessions as he makes his way back. DUSTY RHODES HAS TO LEAVE FLORIDA FOR 90 DAYS. Time: 28:48
