SUMMER WRESTLING SERIES Beaumont, Texas August 15, 1977 ---Before the first match, a WCCW official comes to ringside to announce that the battle royal to determine the opponent for World Champion Terry Funk on August 19 will be the first match held tonight, so that all competitors have an equal shot at winning this coveted title shot. Match #1 Battle Royal: Winner gets a world title shot on August 19 Fifteen wrestlers are chosen to appear in the battle royal. The participants: Cocoa Samoa Pez Whatley Toru Tanaka Fritz Von Erich Al Madril Bruiser Brody Ernie Ladd Haystacks Calhoun Kevin Von Erich Killer Brooks Masa Saito Mr. Fuji Pak Song Scott Casey The Brute (Bugsy McGraw) The final four and order of elimination: 12th wrestler out: Al Madril 13th wrestler out: The Brute 14th wrestler out: Ernie Ladd Winner: Bruiser Brody Brody wins a shot at the world title on August 19! Ladd and Gary Hart furiously protest the results to no avail. Match #2 Pak Song w/ Gary Hart defeated Benny Mendibles via pinfall following a karate thrust to the throat. (9:40) Match #3 Haystacks Calhoun defeated Al Madril via disqualification when Calhoun caught Madril in a bear hug and Madril struck the referee in desperation. (9:31) Match #4 Texas Tag-Team Champions Scott Casey & Kevin Von Erich defeated Karl Von Hess & Kim Duk via pinfall when Scott Casey landed a bulldog on Von Hess and covered for the pin. (10:15) Match #5 Texas Heavyweight Champion Ernie Ladd w/ Gary Hart defeated The Brute via pinfall when Gary Hart struck The Brute with a foreign object out of view of the ref, leaving The Brute prey to a kick to the head and pinfall. After the match, as Ladd and Hart prepared for a two on one attack of the The Brute, Bruiser Brody ran to ringside and cleared the area. ---Intermission --- Main Event American Heavyweight Champion Fritz Von Erich defeated Mr. Fuji w/ Skandar Akbar via pinfall in a tough contest when Akbar’s interference backfired, leaving Fuji prey to an inverted suplex and pinfall.
