WCW 1/14/89 - Gilbert/Windham, Steiner/Rotunda
Aug 23rd, 2007, 8:26am

As some of you know, I came upon the entire 1989 year of the NWA's Saturday night program a few weeks back.

Last night was my first chance to take a look at the footage.

Loved it!

NWA @ Atlanta, GA - TBS Studios - January 1989

World Championship Wrestling taping:

1/14/89 - featured a promo by Dusty Rhodes in which he said he wanted Barry Windham's US title in 1989; included Jim Ross conducting an interview with NWA World Champion Ric Flair, NWA US Champion Barry Windham, & JJ Dillon, during which Eddie Gilbert interrupted and said he had found someone to be his partner if Flair & Windham would agree to face them the following week, with Dillon giving a verbal agreement as long as it wasn't Lex Luger; featured an ad for the Starrcade 88 home video; included Missy Hyatt conducting an interview with Flair regarding his controversial victory over Luger at Starrcade and his refusal to continue to defend the title against Luger:

Eddie Gilbert defeated NWA US Champion Barry Windham (w/ JJ Dillon) via disqualification in a non-title match at around the 13-minute mark when NWA World Champion Ric Flair, who appeared ringside early in the match, attacked Gilbert and - with Windham - double teamed him; after the bout, Jim Ross & Tony Schiavone interviewed Dillon at ringside in which Dillon said Gilbert's name could be added to the list of their other victims - Dusty Rhodes, Bam Bam Bigelow, Sting, and others

Michael Hayes pinned Paul Lee with the DDT at 3:11; during the bout, Steve Casey appeared at ringside; after the match, Ross interviewed Hayes & the Junkyard Dog about their newfound team, going after the NWA US Tag Team Titles, and JYD facing Flair for the title the following week in St. Louis

NWA US Tag Team Champions Kevin Sullivan & Steve Williams (w/ Mike Rotunda) defeated Randy Hogan & Mike Collins at 3:57 when Williams pinned Collins with the Oklahoma Stampede; after the bout, Schiavone interviewed the Varsity Club during which Sullivan challenged NWA Tag Team Champions the Road Warriors and Rotunda said he would reclaim the NWA TV title later in the show

NWA Tag Team Champions the Road Warriors (w/ Paul Ellering) defeated Dale Laparouse & Mike Jackson at the 40-second mark when Road Warrior Hawk pinned Laparouse with the Doomsday Device; after the bout, Laparouse was taken backstage on a stretcher as Schiavone interviewed the champions regarding the challenge issued earlier in the show by Kevin Sullivan & Steve Williams, during which Road Warrior Animal said he and Hawk had found someone to share their NWA 6-Man Tag Team Titles - Genichiro Tenryu

Dennis Condrey & Randy Rose (w/ Paul E. Dangerously) defeated Trent Knight & Bob Emory at 4:12 when Rose scored the pin with the Human Cough Drop; during the bout, it was announced Genichiro Tenryu would make his first appearance as the Road Warriors' tag team partner at the Clash of the Champions Feb. 15 and that their opponents would be named later in the show; during the contest, Dangerously briefly joined the commentary team; after the bout, Ross interviewed Dangerously, Condrey & Rose, during which Dangerously showed footage of himself hitting Jim Cornette with his phone and then said he would force Cornette out of the NWA

NWA Western States Champion Larry Zbyzsko & Al Perez (w/ Gary Hart & Abdullah the Butcher) defeated George South & Curtis Thompson at 2:50 when Perez pinned South with the Alicopter; after the bout, Schiavone interviewed Hart, Zbyzsko, & Perez in which Hart said his men were targetting NWA World Champion Ric Flair and mentioned an upcoming match between Flair and Perez in Florida; Zbyzsko then said in 1980 he retired one legend, in 1987 he retired another, and now he was looking to retire Flair

Dick Murdoch pinned Eddie Sweat with the brainbuster at 2:30

Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane (w/ Jim Cornette) defeated Keith Steinborn & Gary Royal when Eaton pinned Steinborn at 3:29 with one hand on the chest following the Veg-o-Matic; during the bout, Cornette briefly joined the commentary team; after the bout, Ross interviewed Cornette regarding Paul Dangerously, Dennis Condrey & Randy Rose

NWA TV Champion Rick Steiner defeated Mike Rotunda (w/ NWA US Tag Team Champion Kevin Sullivan) via disqualification at 9:09 when Steve Williams attacked the champion; after the bout, referee Teddy Long was thrown to the floor before Williams, Sullivan, and Rotunda hit a double spike piledriver; moments later, Sullivan tried to get at Steiner's dog but Michael Hayes & the Junkyard Dog made the save

Sting & Lex Luger defeated Agent Steel & Bob Holiday at 4:59 when Holiday submitted to Sting's Scorpion Deathlock after Sting hit a Stinger Splash in the corner; after the bout, Ross interviewed Sting & Luger, with Luger addressing Flair denying him future title shots

Elevated legdrop.

One man lifts the other man in the air who is dropped onto the opponent with a legdrop.
