Championship Wrestling from Memphis 8/18/77
Aug 23rd, 2007, 2:23pm

AWA Championship Wrestling
Broadcast and recorded live on 8/18/77 from the studios of Ch3 in Memphis, TN
Broadcast in a modified form on a week’s tape delay across the territory

The theme to 2001 plays as a classic Greek statue is rotated 360 degrees with the words Championship Wrestling emblazoned over it. The scene then fades to Lance Russell and Dave Brown and the announce position.

LR: Welcome once again wrestling fans to Championship Wrestling. I’m Lance Russell and along side of me, as always, is Dave Brown. Dave, in a week that has seen the tragic loss of one of the greatest performers in the history of music, the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Pressley, this is a week where a few of our great athletes have focused of leaving their legacy.

DB: Certainly true Lance. And two of those men, Ronnie Garvin and Jerry Lawler will both be here in action today. We also have the Spider in action. I’m certain he is looking over his shoulder for even the shadow of the crazed Dutch Mantell.

LR: And in our main event, we will see if the former Southern Tag team champions Tommy Rich and Ricky Fields can rebound as they take on the Medics. We have a whole lot more in store today as well. It all gets started, right after these messages.

-Commercial Break-

LR: Our opening contest is set to go between the Spider and Big Bill Howard. Two powerful men in the ring so take it away Davy.

The Spider defeats Big Bill with relative ease, hitting a flying elbow on Howard after a match that was a complete domination job by the masked man. After the match, Dutch Mantell crashes the ring and starts pounding away on the Miser, ripping and clawing to get back his beloved bullwhip. The Spider made the save, drilling the Dutchman with a big double axe handle and pulling the Miser out of the ring with the whip still in his greedy clutches. Both men stop by Lance.

M: That man is a menace! He has assaulted me at every turn and I want him to pay for laying his grubby mitts on my person. Dutch Mantell, the Spider will finish you off Monday night, if you have the guts to step into the ring with a man that is more powerful, more athletic, and simply more of a man than you will ever be.

Security has surrounded Mantell, keeping him from the interview area, but he is pacing and yelling, “I’ll take you on anytime you masked freak!”

LR: It looks like the Mid-South Coliseum will have to contain these two men. We have more action coming up, right after these messages.

-Commercial Break-

LR: We’re back folks, and there is a huge match that took place last Monday at the Mid-South Coliseum. It was a tag team championship match, but not for the Southern Tag Team titles. If you remember, last week on this program John Tolos and Roger Kirby, the NACW Tag Team champions, showed up unannounced and they challenged the BBC. This ended up leading to Tolos and Kirby defending their titles against the BBC duo of Jim Break and Marc Rocco. Let’s go to the film of that match…

The last 10 minutes of the NACW title match is shown, focusing on Rocco and Breaks getting a clean win over the now former NACW champs.

LR: Joining me now is, well I guess the majority of the BBC with their manager Lord John Raven. Lord Raven, I do not see the two men I’m wanting to speak to. Where are Jim Breaks and Marc Rocco?

LJR: Mr. Breaks and Mr. Rocco, the North American Tag Team champions, are back in California doing what a champion does: defending their titles. You see, it’s not like Nick Bockwinkel, who comes into town only every once and a while to face a hand picked challenger, or Ron Bass who has been facing off against the same two baffoons for weeks on end. Why is the European Heavyweight Champion being forced to face that no class Canadian Kelly Kiniski when he should be facing Ron Bass with the Southern Heavyweight title on the line? I’ll tell you why. It’s nothing but pure bigotry.

LR: Now Lord Raven…

LJR: It’s bigotry and discrimination against foreigners. I demand that Pat Roach get a title shot against Ron Bass. Pat has beaten Nicky Bockwinkel from pillar to post and has never even gotten a non-title match against your champion. Your Southern tag team champions were afraid of Breaks and Rocco, but now they’ll have to face the wild Scotsmen, Black Angus Campbell and the Scottish Giant once we finish off those dust-gathering fossils Tommy Gilbert and the “Flabulous” Jackie Fargo. Soon, all the gold in the wrestling world will be in the hands of the BBC. It will not just be BBC 1 title, nor BBC 2 titles, not even BBC 3 title, but BBC with 4 title by the end of your Bank Holiday on September 3rd.

LR: It looks like we will be facing a true British Invasion here in the CWA if Lord Raven has his way. We’ll be back with more action after this.

-Commercial Break-

LR: Joining me now before his match is the King of Wrestling, Jerry Lawler. Jerry, I know this has been a rough week for you.

JL: That’s right Lance. You see, last week on this show, Ron Bass had the gall to say that I wasn’t the king of wrestling. He said I wasn’t even the King of Memphis and wouldn’t be until Elvis passed. Well, the King is dead. Long live the King. And Ron Bass, I may not have been the King of Memphis, but in the wrestling ring, there is no one better than me.

LR: I understand that both you and Ronnie Garvin want a shot at Ron Bass in the Liberty Bowl.

JL: Ron Garvin, you need to listen up because I’m getting tired of carrying you when we are in the ring. I’m getting tired of hearing that you think you belong in the upper level of wrestlers in this business. You may be a darn good wrestler. You may be able to beat the Outlaw Ron Bass in non-title matches, but you have had your shot time and time again and haven’t sealed the deal. So I’m not asking you Ronnie, I’m telling you to say out of my way. The Southern Heavyweight Title is too important to this company to go around the waist of a man who isn’t up to the challenge.

LR: Jerry Lawler fans, and he is in the ring straight away, so take it away Davy.

Jerry Lawler defeats the Mighty Ursa with a second rope fist drop. Ursa put up quite a fight, but the King of Wrestling slayed the big bear.

LR: The King continues on a roll. We’ll be right back after this.

-Commercial Break-

LR: Action is set to go fans. Let’s get to the ring.

Kelly Kiniski defeats the masked Spoiler with a Canadian back breaker in rather quick fashion. The man anointed Canada’s next great athlete then joins Lance Russell in the interview area.

LR: Kelly Kiniski, you continue to impress the fans here in Memphis.

KK: Thanks Lance, but its time for me to do something my old man used to do: call someone out. Lord John Raven, BBC, you’re thinking that you have this territory running scared. You can beat up anyone you want. Intimidate anyone that comes across your path. Well, I’ve seen the best the BBC has to offer and I’m not backing down, and neither are my friends…

From the back walk Jackie Fargo and Tommy Gilbert to a huge cheer from the audience.

KK: I’ve got these two men with me and we are coming for the BBC.

JF: Whooo. It looks like those Brit boys think that just cause they’re new to town, they can run rough over the men that have made Memphis a great wrestling town, and this young man who will keep it a great wrestling town. It ain’t gonna happen Raven. The Crusher said it two weeks back and he was right. You’re a weasel and you need to get skinned.

TG: So bring your Wild Scotsmen to the Liberty Bowl. Find yourself another man to stand up there with your bullies, because we will be waiting for you, all three of us. Kelly has already proven he can beat your man Campbell. I’ll be happy to show you the same Monday night.

LR: A challenge for a big six-man match in the Liberty Bowl fans. We’ll be back with more action after these messages.

-Commercial Break-

LR: More action is set to go fans, Take it away Davy…

Ron Garvin defeats Butch Malone with a figure four leg lock. Malone was out without any support from his manger Tojo Yamamoto or his fellow stable mates. Butch did put up a good fight, but he couldn’t get the best of Garvin. After the match, Ronnie joined Lance at the broadcast position.

LR: Ron Garvin, I know you were in the back to hear the comments of Jerry Lawler…

RG: That’s right Lance. I heard what that windbag had to say, and I’ll be honest with you. There are times where I wonder if I can beat Ron Bass for the Southern Heavyweight Title. There are times where I wonder if I’m really a good enough wrestler to take the belt off of that muscle headed goon. But then I remember one thing Lance. I remember that Jerry Jarrett gave me his shot to get the title back. He gave to me the responsibility of bringing back honor to the Southern Heavyweight Championship, and right now, honor seems to be lacking in the camp of one Jerry Lawler. Not once, but twice in the ring you’ve drilled me with brass knuckles, costing us tag team matches against Bass and his band. So Jerry, I’m not asking you. I’m telling you to stay out of my way because I’m taking that Southern Heavyweight title off of Ron Bass on Labor Day and giving these fans a champion they deserve. Step in my way Lawler and you will find out what it means to face a one-man gang.

LR: It sounds like Ron Garvin has a message for both Ron Bass and Jerry Lawler. We’ll be back with our main event right after these messages.

-Commercial Break-

LR: Fans, we’re here with the former Southern Tag Team Champions, Tommy Rich and Ricky Fields. Gentlemen, I know you have to be focused on regaining the tag team titles.

RF:  Lance, I have to tell you getting back to the top of the hill in the CWA is our biggest goal. Phil Hickerson and Dennis Condrey took advantage of us when I was beaten up beyond belief and even as great a wrestler as Tommy Rich is, he couldn’t pull it off two on one.

TR: So listen up Miser. You send your boys out on Labor Day in the Liberty Bowl and tell them to coat the belts something that don’t burn because Ricky Fields and Tommy Rich are gonna be all fired up and we’re gonna burn down the Bowl.

LR: Your opponents are waiting guys. Good luck. Take it away Davy.

Tommy Rich and Ricky Fields defeat the Medics after Ricky dropkicks Medic #2 to the mat and Tommy tags in to slap on a spinning toe hold to get a submission victory.

LR: Dave, it has been a big afternoon of action, as it is in every arena that CWA wrestling comes to. We have a big night of action coming up in the Mid South Coliseum as well as in Louisville, Nashville, Tupelo, and Jonesboro. We’ll see you next week fans. Good Bye.

Good show this week. I like the tension between Garvin and Lawler. The Spider-Dutch rivalry is cool too, they should have good matches at the MSC in the coming weeks.
