NWA Amarillo TV 8/25: You Won't Believe The End!
Aug 25th, 2007, 12:45am

Hi guys, it’s going to be a very busy few weeks for me so I’ve had to shorten the format just for now. When things settle down, I’ll get back to the normal length. I apologize in advance if the shows aren’t as enjoyable for the time being.

Championship Wrestling from Amarillo
TV 8/25/77
Taped the morning of 8/11/77
Your host and ring announcer: Steve Stack
Timekeeper at the bell is Joe Collins
Ring Examiner is Dr. W. Russell
All matches under supervision of the State of Texas Athletic Board.

Steve Stack welcomes us to this afternoon’s program and let’s everyone know that on today’s program we will see Dick Murdoch defend the Western States Heavyweight Championship in our featured match against “Gorgeous” Gino Hernandez, in what should be a great match. This coming Thursday night at the Sports Arena, Dory Funk Jr. will defend his International Heavyweight Championship against The Mongolian Stomper. Plus, Paul Orndorff and Brian Blair will get their rematch against The Australians, but there will be a special stipulation to be revealed later in the hour. On this afternoon’s program, we’ll see Hangman Harris, Tarzan Tyler, and the very popular team of Paul Orndorff and Brian Blair in tag team action. We’ll have more Championship Rasslin after this short commercial break.

Tarzan Tyler defeated Lanny Poffo at 7’38 after finishing up the young man with a running kick straight to the face. This was Tyler’s first appearance in Texas in quite some time and he showed that he is just as vicious and mean as he ever was by showing absolutely no mercy on his young opponent. At one point, he was in danger of being disqualified after he began tearing at Poffo’s face. Eventually he felt satisfied enough to pin Poffo after knocking him silly with a running kick to the mush.

Interview: Bobby Davis, The Great Kabukiand Gino Hernandez join Steve Stack at ringside and Davis says he has a lot to talk about this week. He is interrupted almost immediately by Gino, who begs Davis to excuse him and then says he has some very exciting business possibilities he wants to talk to Bobby about. Through his numerous contacts out in Hollywood, he came in contact with a very successful businessman who just happens to be a professional wrestler as well. He says this person wants to invest in the Davis Corporation and basically pay Bobby and himself (Gino) to keep on doing what they’re doing here in Amarillo. Bobby Davis seems wary, but Gino Hernandez immediately brushes the nervousness off and says he’s never been wrong about this stuff before and he knows Davis trusts him. Gino then goes onto say that after tonight he’s going to be a double-champion and says the “MVP of Amarillo” is going to beat Dick Murdoch with ease tonight!  Steve asks why Gino is confident and Hernandez says when you’re Gino Hernandez, you have no reason not to be confident! Bobby Davis begins to talk, but Steve Stack once again informs him that Gino took up all the interview time once again. Gino Hernandez shrugs his shoulders, puts his arms around the exasperated Bobby Davis, and walks with him to the back.

Paul Orndorff & Brian Blair (w/ Jerry Oates) defeated The Kozak Brothers at 7’57 when Orndorff pinned Nick after a powerslam. Orndorff and Blair showed incredible teamwork and chemistry once again and it’s clear that this a is a team that is destined for tag team gold in the not-so-distant future. The Kozaks are a great team as well, but not quick enough to keep up with the two spry young men from Florida today. After the match, Jerry Oates (off crutches this week) enters the ring and raises the hands of his two young protégés.

Interview- Joe Blanchard is interviewed along with Brian Blair, Jerry Oates, and Paul Orndorff and Blanchard says that the rematch has been signed for this Thursday night and so The Australians will face the team of Blair/Orndorff. However, since Steve Rackman has been known to constantly interject himself into The Australians’ matches, Jerry Oates has been granted a manager’s license to be in the corner of Orndorff/Blair on Thursday night! Jerry Oates says he’s only going to be there to make sure Steve Rackman doesn’t get involved and promises he will not illegally interfere in the match in any way.

”Hangman” Ricky Harris (w/ Dennis Stamp) defeated Skip Young at 9’11 after finishing Young off with a leg drop from the second rope. Amarillo is really becoming a proving ground for young talent and today two more young stars faced off. This was a fast-paced contest where Young used his speed to land several high-impact maneuver. However, Ricky Harris’ size advantage seemed to be a little too much to overcome because he was able to manhandle Skip towards the end of the match. After the match, Dennis Stamp comes into the ring and spits chewing tobacco on Skip Young and then raises his partner’s hand.

Interview- Dory Funk Jr. is interviewed and says he spoke to his brother Terry, who warned him that his match with The Mongolian Stomper will among the toughest of his career. Dory says he’s prepared for a war and will do whatever it takes to hold on to his International Heavyweight Title. He reiterates that he and Dick Murdoch have declared war on the Bobby Davis Corporation and they will run them out of Amarillo one at a time if they have to.

In one of the most shocking results in recent memory, Gino Hernandez defeated Dick Murdoch at 20’12 to become the brand new Western States Heavyweight Champion after an elbow drop off the top rope! Of course, it wasn’t the elbow drop from Gino that put Murdoch down, it was the interference from Giant Baba who attacked Murdoch on the outside while Gino and Bobby Davis had the referee tied up in the ring. Baba brutally assaulted Murdoch on the floor and posted him and then threw him back in the ring, before the referee saw anything. Hernandez then hit the elbow off the top and made the pin to win the Western States Heavyweight Championship! GINO HERNANDEZ IS A DOUBLE CHAMPION!!!

Pots-Match: After the match, Hernandez celebrated like he’d won an Olympic gold medal, while Dory Funk Jr., Paul Orndorff, Brian Blair, and Jerry Oates hit the ring to explain to the referee what had just happened. There was confusion in the ring as to the decision, but we had to take a commercial break.

Interview- Joe Blanchard called Gino Hernandez & Bobby Davis and Dick Murdoch back to the ring and ordered them to not touch each other or face a $5000 fine from the NWA while he made his announcement. Blanchard says that he saw Giant Baba interfere, but unfortunately the referee didn’t and in Amarillo, the referee’s decision is final and there is no instant-replay rule. So unfortunately, Gino Hernandez is the brand new Western States Heavyweight Champion! Hernandez begins jumping around and celebrating, which is cut off by Blanchard telling him not to get too excited because he’ll have first defense this Thursday night against Cyclone Negro! A look of shock comes across Gino’s face and he suddenly doesn’t look so confident. Dick Murdoch is obviously angry and Joe Blanchard says he certainly has a right to be and so he’s signed a match for this Thursday night that will be Murdoch against Giant Baba with Wild Bull Curry and Bobby Davis banned from ringside! Dick Murdoch gets on the microphone and says he’s coming for Baba first and then he’s coming to get his belt back from whoever has it, and he hopes it’s Gino so he can knock him around. Murdoch then comes with Blanchard that theses two matches for Thursday are official and Blanchard says that they are. Murdoch then cracks a smile and then belts Gino Hernandez with a hell of a right hand and tells Joe Blanchard he’ll have the check on Joe’s desk tomorrow morning! Joe Blanchard himself can’t help but smile as he leaves the ring!

Steve Stack comes back from commercial and takes about the shocking events we saw before the break where Gino Hernandez stole the Western States Heavyweight Champion with the help of the monstrous Giant Baba! Stack runs down the card for this Thursday night’s Sports Arena card and reminds to be back here next week at 4:15PM for another action-packed edition of Championship Rasslin.

I'd love to hear what everyone else thought about the big ending.
