Cow Palace San Francisco, CA August 25, 1977 Opening Match, one fall, 20 minutes Ati Tago vs. Guy Lambert The young South Pacific wrestler takes on the veteran from South San Francisco. The match is scientific and Tago wins with a flying bodypress. Winner-Ati Tago (13:28) Second Match, one fall, 20 minutes Mr. X vs. Johnny Karisma The masked man opens up with several mat wrestling moves. This frustrates Karisma and Johnny turns to the roughhouse tactics. Karisma’s size takes over and he wins with a bodyslam. Winner-Johnny Karisma (14:17) Third Match, one fall, 30 minutes Ripper Collins w/Saul Weingeroff vs. Steve Rickard Two veterans do battle in this one. Rickard, from Auckland, NZ, has arrived in California and impressed a lot of people. Collins still claims to be the “King”. They go back and forth and it is very even. Rickard gains an advantage until Collins is able to rake the eyes and turn the tide. Collins slams Rickard and wins with an elbow drop. Winner-Ripper Collins (17:03) Fourth Match, one fall, 60 minutes Six Man Tag Team Match Tony Garea, Dean Ho and Sam Steamboat vs. The Royal Kangaroos and Alexis Smirnoff w/J.C. Dykes This has mayhem written all over it. Garea and Ho have been chasing the Kangaroos for some time. Throw in Steamboat and Smirnoff, and you have a wild six man match. The match begins with Smirnoff and Garea in the ring. The big Russian goes to work, but Tony matches him move for move. He backs Smirnoff into the corner and tags in Steamboat. Sam uses his quickness to confound Smirnoff. Alexis tags in Charles. The match continues with frequent tags. All six men end up in the ring. Garea and Boyd are the legal men. The referee tries to sort things out, but it’s not easy. Tony rolls up Boyd and the official turns to count the fall. Tony Garea has pinned one of the tag team champions! Winners-Tony Garea, Dean Ho and Sam Steamboat (23:46) Fifth Match, one fall, 60 minutes Colosso Colosetti w/Saul Weingeroff vs. Kevin Sullivan Colosetti has been a major problem for Sullivan. Kevin has come very close to winning the World Jr. Heavyweight Title, but Colosetti would like for himself. The early moments of the match go back and forth. Both men trade armdrags, go behinds and snap mares. Sullivan grabs a headlock and Colosetti shoots him into the ropes. Colosso drops him with a shoulder tackle and goes for a stepover toehold. Sullivan escapes and goes to work on Colosetti. The Argentinean tries everything, but can’t get the edge. Sullivan rolls him up for the win. Winner-Kevin Sullivan (19:51) Semi-Final, one fall, 60 minutes The Von Steiger Brothers vs. Dominic DeNucci and Ray Stevens This tag team feud has raged back and forth with both teams gaining wins. The evil Germans have used every trick in the book, but Stevens and DeNucci have matched them move for move. The match begins with DeNucci and Karl Von Steiger in the ring. Von Steiger backs DeNucci into the corner and both Germans go to work. Stevens tries to run in, but the referee stops him. This allows the Von Steigers to punish DeNucci even more. DeNucci escapes and tags in Stevens. The “Blond Bomber” cleans house and the Von Steigers take to the floor. The Germans return and the match picks up. Stevens dominates the action and he scores several near falls. DeNucci tags in and continues the onslaught. All four men end up in the ring. The referee escorts Stevens to the corner and the Von Steigers land a double bodyslam on Dominic. Kurt covers him and the official turns to count the fall. Winners-The Von Steiger Brothers (23:26) Main Event, one fall, 60 minutes NWA World Championship Terry Funk (Champion) vs. Bruno Sammartino The NWA has been waiting for this rematch since “America 200+1”. Ben Justice has been barred from the arena, so though will be an even match tonight. The Daly City crowd cheers wildly for Bruno. When the World Champion is introduced, the cheers turn to boos. They lock up and Bruno uses his enormous strength to control the action. Funk becomes more and more frustrated. He takes to the floor and argues with the ringsiders. He returns and Bruno goes back to work. Funk is in trouble. We may well see a new NWA World Champion. Terry becomes desperate and he rakes Bruno’s eyes. He then begins to choke Sammartino in the ropes. The referee counts, but Funk breaks at four each time. Funk whips Bruno into the ropes and clamps on the sleeper. Bruno is in trouble. Bruno gets to the ropes and the hold is broken. The match continues and Bruno controls the better part of the action, but cannot pin Funk. The time limit is running out. Bruno whips Funk into the ropes and clamps on the bearhug. Funk fights it. The bell rings, is Bruno the Champion? The referee tells Pepper Martin that the time limit expired. The match is a draw. The fans are outraged, they fell Bruno should be the NWA World Champion. Result-Time Limit Draw (60:00)
