Wrestling At The Chase
8/19/77

Taped on 8/12/77

The show begins with Larry Matysik interviewing Spike Huber. Spike is fired up about getting a shot at Jerry Brisco’s NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title at the Kiel on August 26th . Huber says beating a great man like Brisco to win a World Title would be a dream come true!

The opening match sees Jack & Jerry Brisco take on Kenny Jay & Ron Sexton. The Briscoes put on a clinic and Jack forces Jay to submit to the figure four after a double dropkick.

The Briscoes are interviewed after the match. Jack talks about his NWA World Title shot at Terry Funk on the 26th. Jack says that there’s no love lost between the Briscoes and Funks, but that he realizes that Terry is a great wrestler and great champion. Jack points out that he’s beaten Terry before and says that he think the 26th  will be his night. Jerry talks about Spike Huber being a great athlete and wrestler. Jerry says that the fans will see what the Junior Heavyweight division is all about!

Terry Funk, the NWA World Heavyweight Champion is in the next match against Juan Reynosa. Terry wrestles scientifically, but when Reynosa manages to get out of Terry’s split legged rolling cradle, the champ loses it! He tears into Reynosa’s leg and finishes him with the spinning toehold. Funk refuses to release the hold until the ref threatens a DQ! Funk then releases the hold.

Mickey Garagiola interviews Funk. Terry says that he’s the World Champion and nothing will change that! Terry holds up the belt and says that it means everybody has to respect him, like it or not! Terry predicts that he’ll win in two straight falls At the Kiel!

Central States Champ D.I. Bob Slaughter and his “recruit” Tank Patton are interviewed. Larry Matysik announces that Slaughter & Patton are scheduled to wrestle Stan Hansen and a partner on August 26th at the Kiel, then on September 3rd in Kansa City, Patton will wrestle Hansen in the opening match of the evening. IF Hansen wins, he’ll receive a Central States Title shot later in the evening. Slaughter says that Hansen won’t even make it to KC because he will have to face both Slaughter and Patton by himself at the Kiel because everybody hates Hansen! George Barnes, who abandoned Hansen to face Patton and Slaughter alone last week. Barnes says that he knew whose side to be on and it wasn’t Hansen’s! Barnes is scheduled to wrestle Hansen next and he’ll “take care” of him for Slaughter!

George Barnes hits the ring. When Stan Hansen comes in, Barnes attacks him, but the big Texan fights back. Hansen is in a rage and he goes through the tough Aussie like a knife through butter! Hansen darn near takes Barnes’ head off with the lariat, then clamps on the Brazos Valley Backbreaker for the win! Slaughter and Patton are at ringside and Hansen challenges them both! Slaughter sends Patton in and Hansen beats him from pillar to post! Slaughter attacks from behind and they beat Hansen down! NWA official Lou Thesz and several officials come out and break it up, but for the second straight week, Hansen is brutalized!

Bobby Heenan comes into the ring before the match and takes the mic away from Mickey Garagiola. He gives Seji Sakaguchi, Ox Baker, The Great Hussein Arab, and “The Hulk” Sterling Golden elaborate intros before their eight man tag. They have four tough opponents in Danny Little Bear, Chief Frank Hill, Tonga Fifita, & Mike Pappas, so it turns out to be a good match. The Heenan Family wins when Hussein puts Pappas away with a bone jarring belly to back suplex.

The entire Heenan Family surround a nervous Mickey Garagiola for an interview. Heenan says that on the 26th, the Heenan Family will DOMINATE! Golden talks about his Lumberjack Match with Jos LeDuc. Golden says that thousands of women throughout Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska have sent him letters begging him to run that ugly LeDuc out of the territory and he will do it on August 26th! The Great Hussein Arab says that Bob Backlund is standing between him and Jack Brisco’s Missouri Title. The Arab says that on the 26th, he will find that a dangerous place to be! Ox Baker says that he will heart punch Tatsumi Fujinami and run him out of town like he did Arnold Skoaland and like Sakaguchi is going to do to Pat O’Connor. When Mickey tells Heenan that Fujinami and Backlund have surprise for him on the 26th in St. Louis and on September 3rd in KC, Heenan demands to know what it is. Mickey says that’s all he knows!

Jos LeDuc is interviewed. Jos repeats his promise from last week. If he doesn’t defeat Golden on the 26th in the Lumberjack Match, he’ll go back to Canada! Jos also says that the women in the territory are too smart to want a “coward” like Golden and that “real women want real men”.

Tatsumi “The Dragon” Fujinami takes on Tony St. Clair. As you would expect, this is a great technical match. Tatsumi gets the win with a dragon suplex. The match begins and ends with a handshake.

Jesse Ventura, one half of the NWA World Tag Team Champions, is set to take on Ted DiBiase, one one half of the Central States Tag Team Champions in the TV main event. Lou Thesz comes out before the bout and announces that Ken Patera will wrestle Harley Race next week on TV, but this week, both partners are barred from ringside! This is a hotly contested bout. DiBiase has the early advantage by outwrestling Jesse, but Ventura comes back with brawling and rulebreaking. It looks like Ventura has won after he hits a powerslam, but DiBiase kicks out at the last possible second! Moments later, DiBiase hits a powerslam of his own! One….Two…THREE!!!! TED DIBIASE HAS DEFEATED ONE HALF OF THE WORLD CHAMPIONS!
