Championship Wrestling from Amarillo
TV 9/1/77
Taped the morning of 9/1/77
Your host and ring announcer: Steve Stack
Timekeeper at the bell is Joe Collins
Ring Examiner is Dr. W. Russell
All matches under supervision of the State of Texas Athletic Board.

Steve Stack welcomes us to this afternoon’s program and let’s everyone know that on today’s program we will see NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Jerry Brisco defend his championship against young Skip Young and we’ll also see NWA World Heavyweight Champion Terry Funk wrestle “Hangman” Ricky Harris in a non-title match. Plus, we’ll here from the brand new Western States Heavyweight Champion “Gorgeous” Gino Hernandez, who also happens to be ½ of the Western States Tag Team Champions. We’ll have a special exhibition tag team match as top tag teams, The Super Destroyers and Brian Blair & Paul Orndorff, square off. Plus, the Great Kabuki will be in action as well as he takes on Frank Dalton in what will certainly be the toughest match of his tenure in Amarillo. We’ll have more Championship Rasslin after this short commercial break.

The Great Kabuki (w/ Bobby Davis) defeated Frank Dalton at 6’11 after landing a side-kick to the jaw that seemed to knock Dalton out cold. Kabuki again went through his rituals before the match and then ran across the ring and attacked Dalton. Frank fought back and laid into Kabuki with those big soupbones, but his offense didn’t last long against Kabuki’s karate expertise and he was pinned after a brutal side kick. After the match, as Dalton was getting back to his feet, the Great Kabuki landed another side-kick that sent Frank tumbling out to the floor, where he hit his head on the concrete and had to be carried to the back.

Interview: Bobby Davis and The Great Kabuki are supposed be joined by Gino Hernandez, but Bobby lets us in that he told Gino that the interview was scheduled to be five minutes later than it actually was just so he could get in a little extra speaking time. Bobby says the big issue is The Mongolian Stomper, who has failed over and over recently and this Thursday night is his last chance. He has one more match against Dory Funk Jr. for the International Title, this time a Best 2/3 Falls Match and if he doesn’t win it he’s out of the Corporation. Just then, Gino Hernandez comes strolling out with his two title belts and says he notices that the interview has started early. Gino pats Bobby on the back and then butts in front him and says he is not only the “MVP of Amarillo” but now the only double-champion in the history of the city. Gino says that everyone is so excited that next week here on Championship Wrestling there’s going to be an official “Victory Celebration” that will be attended not only by the Amarillo wrestlers, Steve Stack, and the Bobby Davis Corporation, but also the new business investor he and Bobby signed with this past week. He reminds the viewers that this guy is a wrestler himself and he is coming to wrestle in Amarillo and he’s also invested in the Bobby Davis Corporation! Gino hypes the big celebration for next week some more and then wishes luck to his “best buddy” Jerry Brisco for his title defense tonight and then says he’s looking forward to his own Western States Title defense this Thursday night against “the tub of lard” Chris Taylor. Gino then puts his arm around Bobby and points to the back and leads the way, with the Great Kabuki following behind.

The Super Destroyers wrestle Paul Orndorff & Brian Blair to a 10’00 minute time limit draw in our next TV match. These two teams have looked very impressive recently and have a great back-and-forth contest on TV today. SD II manages to get Blair locked in the clawhold and it looks to be over, but Brian somehow manages to get to the ropes. SD II refuses to break the hold, until SD orders him so they don’t get disqualified. Paul Orndorff tags in and cleans house on both Super Destroyers, landing clotheslines on both men. He even manages to get the original Super Destroyer up in that powerslam, but before he can go for the cover the bell rings, signifying that the time limit had expired. After the match, SD II immediately got into the ring and pulled Orndorff up by the hair and shoved him. It looked like the two teams were going to go at it some more, but Joe Blanchard entered the ring and asked both teams to leave the ring, which they did.

Interview: Dick Murdoch gives an interview that’s short and sweet and basically says that he was screwed last week by Giant Baba and their match last Thursday night settled nothing. He announces that Joe Blanchard has signed a match for 9/13 at the Sports Arena pitting Baba and Kabuki against himself and partner of his choice. Murdoch reveals that he’s chosen Andre The Giant as his partner and that means big trouble for Kabuki and Baba come 9/13! The Funk Brothers are out next and both men state first that what happened to Dick Murdoch last week here on Amarillo TV was a travesty and they hope Gino Hernandez gets the comeuppance he so richly deserves. Terry quickly talks about his match on TV today against Ricky Harris and says it should be a heck of a tune-up for his defense against former champion Harley Race on September 13 on what should be a tremendous night of wrestling in Amarillo. Dory says he’s got a big Best 2/3 Falls Match with The Stomper coming up this Thursday night and he expects it to be a great match-up. He also expects to leave the Sports Arena with the NWA International Heavyweight Title still in his possession.

NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Jerry Brisco (w/ Bobby Davis & Gino Hernandez) defeated Skip Young in 12’45 after bridging a belly to back suplex into a pinning combination. Young shows tremendous fire today against the best Junior Heavyweight wrestler in the world. Gino Hernandez seems to interject himself at every chance he gets, constantly slapping Skip Young from the outside while the referee isn’t looking. It seems that this is even annoying to Bobby Davis, who gives Gino a few eye-rolls. Young rallies back and almost pins Brisco after a big dropkick, but Jerry manages to kick out of the pin at the last second. Young has Brisco on the run and shoots him off the ropes, but Jerry ducks around and plants Skip in the belly to back to win the match. Afterwards, Gino Hernandez enters the ring and begins brutally kicking Skip Young and calls on Jerry Brisco to join in, which Brisco happily does until Chris Taylor hits the ring and clotheslines both men to the outside. Hernandez is furious, but he doesn’t dare get back into the ring with the former Olympian.

Interview: Tarzan Tyler comes out next and claims he’s gotten no competition since coming to Amarillo except punks like he’s run off like Lanny Poffo and Tiger Conway. Tyler says he’s got an open contract for this coming Thursday night at the Sports Arena to any one who wants to come to the Amarillo territory and try and prove their better than “the legend.” Tyler says no-one’s tough enough to beat him and that’s no-one’s dumb enough to accept his challenge his Thursday night.

In a non-title match, NWA World Heavyweight Champion Terry Funk (w/ Dory Funk Jr.) defeated “Hangman” Ricky Harris (w/ Dennis Stamp) at 12’11 after locking Harris in the Spinning Toe Submission. Harris seemingly shocked the World Champion by trading technical holds with him early on, but it soon broke down into a good ol’ Texas style fight. At one point, Funk came off the ropes for a clothesline, but Dennis Stamp slammed his elbow into Terry’s back. This brought Dory over and caused a brawl on the floor between Dory and Stamp. In the ring, Ricky Harris took advantage and worked over Terry Funk and then slammed him in the center of the ring. The Hangman then went up to the second rope for a leg drop, but he missed as Terry rolled away just in time. As Ricky Harris got back to his feet, Terry kicked the Hangman’s knee out and then locked in the Spinning Toe Submission for the win. After the match, Dennis Stamp pulled his partner to the outside, while The Funks celebrated in the ring.

Stack runs down the card for this Thursday night’s Sports Arena card and reminds to be back here next week at 4:15PM for another action-packed edition of Championship Rasslin.
