Wrestling At The Chase 9/2/77 Taped on 9/2/77 The NWA World Tag Team Champions Ken Patera and Jesse Ventura open the show wrestling Tony Russo & Leo Seitz. The Champs roll, with Patera finishing Russo with the swinging full nelson. Ventura and Patera are interviewed. The arrogant Ventura does all the talking and brags about he and Patera beat DiBiase & Race easily at the Kiel last week. Mickey Garagiola, doing the interview, disputes that, saying it was a close match. Ventura and Patera close in on him and he drops the mic and scurries away! Ventura grabs the mic and says that on Labor Day in Kansas City, they’ll beat DiBiase and Race in two straight falls! Ted DiBiase and Harley Race, the Central States Tag Team Champions, are interviewed. They talk about coming so close to winning the World Tag Team Championships at the Kiel. DiBiase promises the fans that they won’t quit until they are the World Champions! Race and DiBiase wrestle George Gadaski and Juan Reynosa. Harley and Ted are obviously riding high. Race pins Reynosa after a diving headbutt off of the middle turnbuckle. Central States Champion D.I. Bob Slaughter and his “recruit”, Tank Patton are interviewed. Tomorrow night, in Kansas City, Stan Hansen must defeat Tank Patton in the opening bout to get a title shot later on in the card. Patton promises to beat Hansen, but Slaughter says it doesn’t matter if Tank wins or loses….Stan Hansen will be in no condition to wrestle! Slaughter also taunts Hansen about he and Tank beating Hansen and Wahoo McDaniel at the Kiel last week. Tank Patton wrestles Mike Pappas. At first, Pappas makes things interesting, but the size of Patton is too much. Tank hits Pappas with the “Big Gun” clothesline to score the pin. Bob Slaughter, doing color at ringside claims that both the “Big Gun” and the “Slaughter Cannon” are superior to Hansen’s Lariat. Stan Hansen is interviewed. Stan says that Slaughter and Patton got a cheap win at the Kiel, but he and Wahoo were standing tall in the end. As Stan talked, film of he and Wahoo brawling with Slaughter and Patton after match and eventually running them off is shown. Stan says that tomorrow night, he’ll go through Tank Patton to get the Central States title match and he’d go through an army if he had to. Stan Hansen wrestles Kenny Jay in a one sided bout. Stan finishes with the lariat and darn near takes the Sodbuster’s head off! The entire Heenan Family is interviewed and now they are one family member less! Heenan announces that Sterling Golden let the Family down and he’s gone ! Clips are shown from the Kiel. The first clip shows The Great Hussein Arab attacking Jos LeDuc during the Lumberjack Match and busting him open. The second shows LeDuc pinning Golden, then challenging Hussein Arab to face him! Tomorrow in KC, Hussein will take on LeDuc! LeDuc is waiting in the ring and the Hussein Arab tells him that he will destroy him tomorrow night! Ox Baker then starts badmouthing Arnold Skoaland and says that he intends to heart punch him the next chance that he gets! Heenan starts insulting Skoaland as well. Matchmaker Clarence Grigsby comes out and announces that a stipulaion has been added to the Seiji Sakaguchi/Ox Baker vs. Bob Backlund/Tatsumi Fujinami match tomorrow night! BOBBY HEENAN WILL BE HANDCUFFED TO ARNOLD SKOALAND! Heenan goes nuts! Jos LeDuc takes on Ron Slinker in the next match. Slinker gives LeDuc a good match using his martial arts and wrestling combination. LeDuc is just too powerful and wins via pinfall after an over the knee backbreaker. Bob Backlund and Tatsumi “The Dragon” Fujinami come to the interview area. Backlund asks the fan to give a warm welcome to their manager, Arnold Skoaland! Arnie says that he is feeling much better and that he looks forward to tomorrow night in KC when he will make sure that Bobby Heenan doesn’t stick his nose in his boys’ business! Backlund talks about being the number one contender to Jack Brisco’s Missouri Title and says that Tatsumi Fujinami is interested in another Brisco, NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champ Jerry Brisco! Two newcomers to the territory participate in a mixed tag match as the Panther teams with Vickie Williams to wrestler Ripper Collins and Ann Casey. Turns out to be a hard fought contest with both the Panther and Collins looking tough. The ladies are the deciding factor though as Vickie pins Ann with a flying bodypress. Kansas City, MO Kemper Arena 9/3/77 Stan Hansen vs. Tank Patton: In order to obtain a Central States Title match later in the show, Hansen must beat Patton. Hansen does pin Patton at 13:09 with an inside cradle, but Patton bloodies him during the match and works on his ribs with the combat helmet and several splashes after the match! Stan walks slowly to the back, looking almost done in. Will he be able to take on D.I. Bob Slaughter later tonight? The Panther vs. Ripper Collins: A closely fought battle between two tough wrestlers. Panther rolls out of the way of the “OOMPA” knee drop and lands a suplex, but the bell rings, indicating a 10 minute draw. Pat O’Connor Vs. George Barnes: The former World Champion takes on the tough Aussie. A back and forth match that sees O’Connor win with a kneedrop at 10:01. Vickie Williams vs. Anne Casey: The ladies put on a good show for the Kansas City crowd. Ann wins with the Boston Crab at 10:22. Akio Sato & Spike Huber vs. Checkmate & Tony St. Clair A fast paced, clean match. Huber pins St. Clair with a backslide at 11:11. Bob Backlund & Tatsumi “The Dragon” Fujinami vs. Ox Baker & Seiji Sakaguchi Bobby Heenan will be handcuffed to Arnold Skoaland for this match! It takes several minutes to get Heenan cuffed to Skoaland. Once that’s over with, an action packed match takes place. The stipulation works as the managers are a total non factor. Fujinami gets the win for his team after an enzuguri kick on Sakaguchi at 11:15. Jos LeDuc vs. The Great Hussein Arab(w/Bobby Heenan): LeDuc beats Arab all over the ring for the first several minutes of this match. Hussein comes back and tries to soften up LeDuc’s neck and back, obviously a setup for the camel clutch. The advantage doesn’t last long as the big Canadian comes roaring back. Hussein manages to duck a LeDuc punch and hit a belly to back suplex. Hussein Arab goes for the pin…..LeDuc gets a foot on the bottom rope…..HEENAN KNOCKS IT OFF BEFORE THE REF SEES IT! The Great Hussein Arab pins Jos LeDuc at 12:59! LeDuc chases Heenan and Hussein away before they can celebrate! CENTRAL STATES TITLE MATCH: D.I. Bob Slaughter© vs. Stan Hansen: Hansen comes to the ring with his head and ribs bandaged while Slaughter looks fresh. Amazingly, Hansen gets the early advantage and works on Slaughter’s back and legs. Hansen applies the Brazos Valley Backbreaker and Slaughter barely gets to the ropes to break the hold! Hansen can sense that Slaughter is in trouble and goes for the lariat…Slaughter ducks and Hansen goes flying out of the ring! The advantage swings to Slaughter. The brutal ex-Marine opens Hansen’s forehead up and works on his ribs. When Slaughter applies the Cobra Clutch, it looks like it’s over, but Hansen somehow escapes! Hansen makes an amazing comeback and it looks like he’s gonna do it! Unfortunately, Slaughter moves out of the way of a reckless Hansen charge and Stan hits the ringpost headfirst! Slaughter applies the Cobra Clutch Again! This time, Hansen can’t escape, but he refuses to submit! Finally, Stan just blacks out and the ref gives the match to Slaughter. However, Hansen gave an amazing effort and he’ll get another shot soon! NWA World Tag Team Title Match: Jesse Ventura & Ken Patera© vs. Ted DiBiase & Harley Race: 2/3 falls, 1 hour time limit First Fall: Ted and Harley are hitting on all cylinders while Jesse and Ken seem totally out of sync. DiBiase pins Jesse with a sunset flip in just 4:29 to take the first fall for his team. Second Fall: For the first several minutes, Ted and Harley maintain total control. However, Ventura rolls out of the way of a Race diving headbutt off the middle turnbuckle and that’s just the break the champs need. They work Harley over for several minutes before Patera pins the veteran with a running powerslam at 24:57. Third Fall: Harley has to start the final fall and the rest break between falls doesn’t seem to do him much good. The champs isolate Harley and continue to punish him. It looks bad as Ventura applies a bearhug, but Race finds the strength to counter and hit a belly to belly suplex! Race crawls over and tags DiBiase! As Race lays on the apron, trying to recover, Ted DiBiase comes in and takes over! Ted gets several near falls on both Ventura and Patera, but the other man breaks it up each time. Finally, Harley gets to his feet just as DiBiase hits the powerslam on Ventura! One….Two….THR….Broken up by Patera! Race hits the ring and attacks Patera! It’s turned into a brawl! All for men spill out of the ring and soon, the ref has no recourse to count both teams out! The final fall lasts 17:57, but the two teams continue to brawl! Finally, Race grabs one of the tag title belts and starts whipping the champs! Ventura grabs Patera, who wants to keep fighting, and drags him away! Race and DiBiase put on the NWA tag title belts and model them for the Fans! Not this time, guys, but I think it might just be a matter of time!
