NWA Amarillo TV 9/8: Gino Appreciation Night
Sep 7th, 2007, 6:11pm

Championship Wrestling from Amarillo
TV 9/8/77
Taped the morning of 9/8/77
Your host and ring announcer: Steve Stack
Timekeeper at the bell is Joe Collins
Ring Examiner is Dr. W. Russell
All matches under supervision of the State of Texas Athletic Board.

Steve Stack: "Folks, welcome to another action packed hour of Championship Rasslin', and folks, what an hour we have for you today. We have a big hour for you folks today and supposedly Gino Hernandez has some sort of special celebration planned for himself since he now holds two championship belts. I’m sure that will be quite the spectacle. He also promised that this business partner, who also happens to be a wrestler, will reveal himself today as well so that should happen within the hour. But first, we have some major news to report and that is that Terry Funk lost the NWA World Heavyweight Championship this past holiday weekend in the Mid-Atlantic area to Chief Wahoo McDaniel. I think everyone knows that I have the greatest personal and professional respect for Terry Funk and the whole Funk family and I know Terry will be hot on the trail of the new champion. That said, I would like to say that if the NWA can’t have an honorable man like Terry representing it, a man like Wahoo will do just as well. I have known Mr. McDaniel for many years and have always found him to be a stand-up individual and one of the finest professional rasslers in the world. So I’d like to send out hearty congratulations to Chief Wahoo McDaniels and wish him the best of luck for his title defense this Thursday night against Harley Race. Now, let’s get back to this week’s program for a moment. We have a new wrestler joining us for the first time tonight, coming all the way from Britain, he’s the British Empire Heavyweight Champion Mick McManus. And of course, those of you who were at the Sports Area on Thursday night saw Johnny Weaver answer the open-contract challenge of Tarzan Tyler and defeat him. Johnny will be here in action today against Ron Miller of the Fabulous Australians. Plus, Dory Funk Jr., Giant Baba, and Paul Orndorff & Brian Blair will be joined by their friend Bobby Eaton for 6-man tag team action…”

LOOK- GINO HERNANDEZ IS OUT HERE ALREADY!!

Gino Hernandez: “Come on, Steve, what was that?! I’m hearing more life out of Elvis than you and he’s been dead for two weeks! Tonight is Gino Hernandez Appreciation Night! You night to plug it, man! Hype it for the people, make sure they stay tuned to see their hero get honored! Seriously, I need to hear some more excitement out of you because that was just pathetic!”

Steve Stack: “Gino…will you just let me do my job?”

Gino Hernandez: “Steve, I want you to do your job! I desperately want you to do your job!! You’re not hyping this huge event up to my standards and after all, you do work for me!”

Steve Stack: “I most certainly do not, Gino! I work for Western States Sports, which is an affiliate of the National Wrestling Alliance. I most certainly DO NOT work for you!”

Gino Hernandez: “Well I’m the MVP of Amarillo so you ‘practically’ work me, Stevie! So work on that delivery, I’ll be watching!”

Steve Stack: “(Sigh)…We’ll be back with more Championship Rasslin.”

MICK McMANUS has joined Steve Stack for an interview!

Steve Stack: “Ladies and gentlemen, this is the newest competitor to join the Amarillo territory, Mick McManus, who comes all the way from South London in Britain. Mick, it’s a real pleasure to have you here with us on Championship Rasslin.”

Mick McManus: “I certainly wish I could extend the same pleasantries, but frankly Steven, I’d be lying and while I am many things, one thing I am most certainly am not is a liar. I wish to convey a very simple message to all of you Americans watching at home in your mo-bile homes on this afternoon’s telecast. I am the current British Empire Heavyweight Champion, a belt I have held continuously for 21 straight years. I have never had my shoulders pinned to the canvas in my professional career and I have come to America to show that the British athlete is far superior to his American counterpart. Beginning next week, I will issue a challenge to any American wrestler who sees fit to answer it. I surmise that no American wrestler can last seven minutes in the ring with me and I will be willing to back up that claim with $10,000, American currency. I will appear in two weeks on this program to see if any American is brave enough to answer my challenge, but I should warn you that I will show no mercy and will likely injure any opponent who dares step into my ring. Steven, that is all I have to say. Thank you ever so kindly.”

Steve Stack: “Well, that was interesting. Speaking of new arrivals, Johnny Weaver pleasantly surprised a lot of people by showing up last Thursday and defeating Tarzan Tyler. Now Weaver is ready for action so let’s go to the ring to see the former International Champion!”

JOHNNY WEAVER def. RON MILLER with Steve Rackman, 8:41
after driving Miller’s head into the canvas with his devastating bulldog headlock.

WILD BULL CURRY, THE GIANT BABA, & THE GREAT KABUKI join Steve Stack at ringside!

Wild Bull Curry: “Dick Murdoch, you’ve made yourself a real problem to us and that’s something you never should have done! Bobby Davis’ new business investor has said that he’s losing patience with the well…’less civilized’ wrestlers…that are members of the Corporations and has ordered them to take you out or face the consequences! Well Dick Murdoch, Kabuki and Baba will face no such consequences! On September 13, you have brought in Andre The Giant to take on The Great Kabuki and The Giant Baba! Bringing in Andre didn’t work last time and it won’t work this time! This Thursday night, it’s going to be the end of YOU!”

We come back to a taped interview from HARLEY RACE, who will challenge the new champion Chief Wahoo McDaniel for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship this Thursday night.

Harley Race: “March 23, 1973 was the single worst night of my professional wrestling career. On that night, Dory Funk Jr. defeated me and took my NWA World Heavyweight Championship, taking away the one thing I’d worked my entire career for. It’s been four years since that night and yet I still dwell on the final seconds of that match every single night of my life. I wake up in the middle of the night with a cold sweat, thinking about that night and what would have happened if it had gone differently. This coming Thursday night, I have the chance to end those nightmares and more importantly, put them on another man. I’ve had them long enough. And if I can’t give them to Dory Funk Jr., I’m just as a happy to give those nightmares to the big red-nosed Indian chief, who just got his grubby squaw-hands on the belt. You see Wahoo, after I pin you in the middle of the ring on Thursday night, you’ll go to the hospital or if you’re lucky back to the hotel room, and the images of the final seconds of the match will replay in your mind over and over again. That’s what I’ll leave in Amarillo on Thursday night. What I’ll take however is my NWA World Heavyweight Championship title belt. It’s coming home to the Legend from Kansas City.”

THE GIANT BABA with Wild Bull Curry def. JERRY KOZAK, 4:01 after landing a double-stomp on Jerry’s chest.

BOBBY EATON, PAUL ORNDORFF + BRIAN BLAIR def. DR. X, MIKE JACKSON, + BILLY SPEARS, 10:11 when Orndorff drove Dr. X into the canvas with his running powerslam. Eaton, Orndorff, and Blair show great chemistry as a three-man team.

PAUL ORNDORFF + BRIAN BLAIR join Steve Stack at ringside.

Steve Stack: “Gentlemen, I couldn’t help but notice a little tension between you gentlemen and The Super Destroyers after last week’s time limit draw. A rematch has been signed for this Thursday night.”

Paul Orndorff: “Well Mr. Stack, we may be young wrestlers, but we’re not push-overs by any means. Super Destroyer II came into the ring after the time had expired last week, grabbed me by the hair and shoved me. I hope he doesn’t think Brian and I are just going to let that sort of thing go.”

Brian Blair: “This Thursday night, there’s going to be a longer time limit. We’re going to bring the fight to the Super Destroyers. Don’t try any of that funny business with us again because we’re not going to take it!”

Steve Stack: “We’ll be back with more Championship Rasslin.”

Look who’s out here- BOBBY DAVIS, NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION JERRY BRISCO, AND “THE MAN OF THE HOUR” GINO HERNANDEZ!!!

Gino Hernandez: “Oh thank you all so much! Steve, hit the bricks, it’s time for a real broadcast to do his job! Jerry, why don’t you and I take over the announcing duties, buddy, OK?”

Jerry Brisco: “Why, Ah’d be happy too, Gino! This sure is a heck of a party, Gino! But let’s let these people in on the big secret and tell ‘em who the new investor is!”

Bobby Davis: “It’s not that big of a deal, it’s a silent investor so we really don’t have to…”

Gino Hernandez: “Take it easy, Bobby baby! Ladies and gentlemen, without further adieu, please welcome the man who’s been generous enough to invest his millions into this fine group of athletes! He’s a member of the most famous and wealthiest families in all of professional wrestling. HE’S ROBERT FULLLLLLLLLLERRRRRRRR!!!!!”

Robert Fuller, dressed in a white suit with a Stetson hat on, comes out and shakes hands with the members of the Bobby Davis Corporation, before giving Gino Hernandez a hug.

Robert Fuller: “Why, thank ya so much for havin’ me here tahday for your celebration, Gino! It means so much to me as the newest member of this Corporation to be included! And Bobby, don’t you worry none, I’m not gonna step on any toes. I’m just here to make your life easier. We’ll talk about that more later, but for now, I just want to say three cheers to the man of the hour, the double champion, Gino Hernandez! HIP HIP HOORAY!”

Gino Hernandez: “We’ll be right back folks with more of Gino Hernandez Appreciation Night!”

The mutual admiration society is interrupted- BY WESTERN STATES SPORTS CHAIRMAN JOE BLANCHARD!

Gino Hernandez: “Joey! Did you come to congratulate me too?”

Joe Blanchard: “I did, Gino. I wanted to congratulate you because by hook or by crook, you managed to win both of those championship belts you have. So you deserve some congratulations for that.”

Gino Hernandez: “Thanks Jo-Jo, I appreciate that!”

Joe Blanchard: “I also brought you a present of sorts. See, I know you’re very much interested in the spirit of competition and you have open contracts out for both of those championship belts. I’m out here to announce that two contracts have been signed and you will be defending the Western States Tag Team Championship against the former tag team champions The Kozak Brothers and you’ll be defending the Western States Heavyweight Championship against Jerry Oates, who’s ready to return to the ring.”

Gino Hernandez: “OK, Jo-Jo, I see what this is really about. You’re not really out here to congratulate me, you’re trying to stack the deck against me. Well fine, I’ll defend against those punks. You just let me know the nights when I have defend against those guys…”

Joe Blanchard: “This Thursday.”

Gino Hernandez: “What do you mean, ‘this Thursday.’ Which match?”

Joe Blanchard: “Oh I’m sorry, I guess I wasn’t clear. You had open contracts out and since I knew you were such a fighting champion by the way you won those two belts, I knew you could handle two title defenses in one night. Both matches are THIS THURSDAY NIGHT!”

Bobby Davis: “YOU CAN’T DO THAT!!!”

Gino Hernandez: “BOBBY!!! HE CAN’T DO THAT!!! HE CAN’T DO THAT, CAN HE?!?!?!?!”

Joe Blanchard: “Actually I can and I just did. Be ready because Thursday’s going to be a long night for you.”

Gino Hernandez: “Bobby, how could you let open contracts out there like that?”

Bobby Davis: “I-I-I-I-I…well it wasn’t…I-I-I-I-I…”

Robert Fuller: “Now hold on just a minute here! In Bobby’s defense, he’s got a lot of things to manage so let’s not jump on his case, Gino. Ah can figure out a way to handle this situation. Bobby, you seem like you need a little time off. I want you to take the week off and take a vacation to Holleewood! I’ll take care of all the reservations!”

Bobby Davis: “I can’t! I have to manage Gino for the match and I don’t have time to make travel…”

Robert Fuller: “Bobby, I’ll be in Gino’s corner on Thursday night for both matches and I’ll have my secretary make the travel arrangements. Now, I won’t take no for an answer on this one, Bobby. You need a break so mistakes like this don’t happen again. Remember, I’m investing mah family’s money into your Corporation!”

Bobby Davis: “Oh…OK.”

Robert Fuller: “Now Gino, let’s go to the back and talk some strategy! Joe Blanchard, you’re not going to get away with this. Not now that Robert Fuller’s in town!”

Steve Stack: “I don’t think Gino Hernandez Appreciation Night ended the way they wanted it to, folks! Remember, this Thursday night at the Sports Arena, it’s Giant Baba and Great Kabuki against Dick Murdoch and Andre The Giant! The Super Destroyers wrestle Paul Orndorff and Brian Blair once again. Gino Hernandez has to defend both of his championship titles. And in the big main event, NWA World Heavyweight Champion Chief Wahoo McDaniel defends against former champion ‘Handsome’ Harley Race.  Welp, folks, we are outta time, make sure to come on out to the Sports Arena this Thursday night and remember next week’s show will be a ‘Best Of’ show so we’ll see you in two weeks on Championship rasslin'!”

You now have Eaton, Orndorff, Blair, and Hernandez in what has to be one of the best, if not the best, youth vs. experienced balanced rosters on this board.

I love Eaton, Orndorff, and Blair as a faction.

Fuller sending Davis away and taking over. HMMMN?

Weaver winning his second match with a ... bulldog? Noe, that's news.

Baba and Kabuki have their work cut out for them.

McManus better be able to put his money where his mouth is.

Great show, Fever Pitch.

I admit, I do have a tendency to pair the heels up with managers. That may be because I was raised on WWWF wrestling where every heel was either with Blassie, Wizard, or Albano. In this case, my only defense is that Ron Miller and Larry O'Dea are actually a tag team (The Fabulous Australians) who are managed by Steve Rackman, that were just working singles matches on this program. As for Robert Fuller he won't really be working as a manger after this Thursday night, more as a partner-in-crime for Gino. But your point is correct and it is something I'll work on.

just an observation about the managers..don't change on account of me.
i'm the exact opposite of you..i have one manager (lord alfred hays), and i use him as a player/coach type role. cause he was still able to wrestle big time in the late '70's.
