NWA Amarillo at the Sports Arena- Wahoo vs Race
Sep 12th, 2007, 8:18pm

09/13/1977
The Sports Arena
Amarillo, Texas
Bell Time 8PM

1. COWBOY RON BASS def. DOUG SOMMERS after a knee drop off the second rope, 8:31.

2. SKIP YOUNG + RICKY THOMPSON def. HANGMAN HARRIS + DENNIS STAMP when Thompson caught Harris with the high dropkick to chin, 11:11.

3. BOBBY EATON def. BILLY SPEARS after hit landed a big leg drop off the top rope on the former Gulf Coast Heavyweight Champion.

4. JOHNNY WEAVER def TARZAN TYLER after locking Tyler in the infamous sleeper hold, 12:49.

6. WESTERN STATES TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
GINO HERNANDEZ + JERRY BRISCO w/ Robert Fuller def. JERRY + NICK KOZAK
when Jerry Brisco pinned Nick Kozak after catching him in a Fisherman’s Suplex, 15:38. Gino tried to stay out of the ring and stay fresh as much as possible, leaving his partner to do much of the ring work. The Kozaks gave Brisco some fits, but Gino tagged in enough to ease the burden and the champions were able to retain. Gino quickly headed to the back to prepare for his next title defense.

**INTERMISSION**

7. THE SUPER DESTROYERS drew PAUL ORNDORFF + BRIAN BLAIR when the time limit expired after another great match that only seemed to further the growing feud between these two teams, 20:00.

8. THE GREAT KABUKI + GIANT BABA w/ Wild Bull Curry V ANDRE THE GIANT + DICK MURDOCH

This is a classic Greco roman wrestling contest- NOT!! IT’S A WILD ONE FROM BELL TO BELL BECAUSE THERE’S A LOT OF BAD FEELINGS HERE!!! The referee let’s a lot of leeway go here and this one looks like a street fight with all four men brawling all over the Sports Arena. Baba and Kabuki manage to get control, but Andre and Murdoch fight back and bash both of their opponent’s heads together right in the middle of the ring!! Andre The Giant press-slams Kabuki! DICK MURDOCH BODY-SLAMS THE GIANT BABA!!! ANDRE SITS DOWN ON KABUKI!!! MURDOCH UP TOP WITH A DOUBLE STOMP DOWN ON BABA’S THROAT!!! ANDRE AND MURDOCH WITH A DOUBLE PIN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RING FOR THE ONE…TWO…THREE, 14:11!!!!! ANDRE THE GIANT AND DICK MURDOCH WIN IT!!! THEY BEAT GIANT BABA AND GREAT KABUKI AND PINNED ‘EM RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RING!!!

9. WESTERN STATES HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
GINO HERNANDEZ w/ Robert Fuller def JERRY OATES
by disqualification when the referee caught Jerry Oates with a steel chair, 20:19. Oates, however, never used the chair. It was Gino who tried to use the chair after the referee had been knocked down. Oates managed to wrestle the chair away from Gino as the referee began to stir with the help of Robert Fuller. Gino saw this out of the corner of his eye and fell to the mat and feigned like he’d been Oates had him with the chair. When the referee looked up, he saw Gino on the ground and Oates with the chair and called for the disqualification, allowing Gino to defy the odds and leave the Sports Arena with both of his titles.

10. NWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
CHIEF WAHOO MCDANIEL V HARLEY RACE

Before the match even begins, Harley Race asks for the microphone and tells the fans that even though they are not good enough to see it, they will be witness to a World Heavyweight Title change. Wahoo and Race lock up after the bell rings, and McDaniel is able to wrestle Harley to the mat with a front face-lock. Wahoo McDaniel switches around and applies a side-headlock, but eventually releases the hold as Harley Race reaches the ropes. As Race starts to get to his feet, Chief Wahoo lays into him with one of those brutal chops to the chest. McDaniel then drives his knee into Race’s face several times and sends him off the ropes and elevates him into a back-drop that sends Harley crashing to the canvas. Wahoo makes the cover, but Race surprisingly is able to kick out rather quickly. Wahoo McDaniel pops back up and charges at Harley Race, but Handsome Harley catches him and drives him into the canvas with a patented belly-to-belly suplex very early on. That usually means the end, but it’s too early to put away the World Heavyweight Champion so Harley goes to pull McDaniel back up. Harley Race then pulls Wahoo McDaniel up and then plants him back down once again with a scoop slam. Race applies a nerve hold of some kind and he has locked in for a few moments, but the big Chief is able to get to the ropes and the hold must be broken. Race continues the assault for the next ten minutes or so and he really softens up the champion. Harley then pulls Wahoo into position for a piledriver, but Wahoo blocks it and is able to back-drop Race down to the canvas. Harley Race ever so slowly gets back to his feet, but Wahoo McDaniel drills him with a clothesline that nearly takes Harley’s head off. Wahoo pulls Race back up, shoots him off the ropes, and catches him with a boot to the stomach and then a knee lift. Wahoo goes for the cover, but Race manages to get his shoulder up in time to stay in the match. Wahoo then goes up to the second rope as Harley gets to his feet and as Race turns around, the big Chief drills him with the flying Tomahawk Chop! McDaniel makes the pin and gets the three count for the win to retain his NWA World Championship! It was a tough first defense here in Amarillo, but the Big Chief is victorious, 42:12.

**Thanks very much to Psycho Hillbilly & RMF1973 for allowing Harley Race and the Giant Baba to appear on this show**

Very good show.

I love the team of SBS and the Brown Bomber.
Gino v/s Oates was a fantastic match.
good win for the Dean of Wrestling Prof. Johnny Weaver
awesome main event.

I don't care for Robert Fuller in this role this early in his career, but you're doing a great job with everything else.

Classic match between Wahoo and Harley. I love Wahoo as World Champ.

Gino is the total package. Brains and brawn. Oates was abused!

Andre and Murdoch with a big win.

I don't think Gino wants to antagonize his partner by taking advantage of Brisco's work like that.

Great wins by Eaton, Weaver (with the sleeper!), Thompson, and Young.

Great action at The Sports Arena.

Nice House show.

Gino Vs. Oates surprised me.

Question?  Is Jerry Brisco a heel or a face, stuck with Gino as his partner?

I have to agree with Red about Fuller...this early in his carreer he had so much potential and could really go in the ring, using him as a manager could be a mistake.

Jerry Brisco has been a heel in the Amarillo territory and Gino's tag team partner going back to when El Topo was the promoter. I don't necessarily see Jerry as being stuck with Gino as Gino is both 1/2 of the Western States Tag Team Champions and the Western States Heavyweight Champion. It could have been an error in match-description on my part.  I've tried to make Hernandez the #1 rising heel in my territory. Whether that's worked or not of course, is a up to the readers.

Fuller was working as Gino's manager for one night only as per the angle that took place on last weekend's TV. He will be working in Amarillo's an in-ring competitor from here on out as one of Gino's partners-in-crime.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Race vs Wahoo for the World Title is a dream match in my eyes, and could be one of the biggest matches in NWA Classics for years to come.

Not only would I have bought a ticket just for that match, but I would've flown down to West Texas all the way from Toronto, just to see that one match, it wouldn't even matter if there were any other matches on the card!

I like your booking, you've done a great job of not only building up your main guys, but you consistently put on solid mid-card and lower-card matches as well.
