AWA "Maple Leaf Wrestling" TV  9-15-77
Sep 15th, 2007, 8:02am

Brought to you by Queensbury Athletic Club
Sanctioned by the American Wrestling Association

Saturday, September 15th, 1977
Airing across Canada on CHCH Channel 11 from 1pm to 2pm

Hosted by Lord Athol Layton
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

.
.
.
.
The opening plays, accompanied by Herb Alpert’s A Bandita.  We see short clips of some of the stars that have appeared on Maple Leaf Wrestling over the years, like Whipper Billy Watson, Gene Kiniski, Bruno Sammartino, Johnny Valentine, The Sheik, Jack Brisco and many more.

We then join Lord Athol Layton standing behind a podium with the Maple Leaf Wrestling logo on it, behind him, the Maple Leaf Wrestling logo and a big red and green Maple Leaf.

Layton: "Cheery-O everyone.  Welcome to Maple Leaf Wrestling.  I'm Lord Athol Layton.  I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for inviting us into your homes once again.  We have a great show in store for you today.  Verne Gagne, former World Heavyweight Champion, will be here.  Greg Valentine and the Masked Canadian will be in tag team action.  The High Flyers, Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell will be in action as well, and in our big feature bout, Carlos Rocha, the popular Portugese Champion, faces John Tolos, who was, for many years, one half of the infamous Canadian Wrecking Crew with his brother, Chris."

AWA World Champion Nick Bockwinkel walks out and joins Layton on the set.

Layton: "I'm joined at this time by the reigning World Heavyweight Champion, Nick Bockwinkel.  Nick, two weeks ago, The Crusader asked for one final shot at the World Title, and said that if he couldn't win the title from you on September 20, he would not ask for another title match while you are Champion.  However, last week, we saw the video from the office of AWA President Eddie Einhorn, who said that due to the way the previous matches had ended, this match would be contested under Texas Death Match rules!  That means no time limit, no DQ's and no Count-outs.  The match will continue until one man cannot answer the 10-count."

Bockwinkel: "Layton, do you really think it matters one bit to me what stipulations are added to the match?  Do you really think it will make a difference?  The bottom line, Layton, is this...the Crusader cannot beat Nick Bockwinkel, and that's all there is to it.  He's had opportunity after opportunity after opportunity, and every time, he's failed miserably!  On top of that, he comes out and lies to the fans, telling them that he could've won, but the time ran out, or he claims that I broke the rules.  It's always an excuse with him!  Crusader, this match is going to prove what I've been saying for months, that you can't beat me, and after I defeat you, right in the middle of the ring, you'll never get another shot at this title!"

Bockwinkel walks off the set.

Layton: "Nick Bockwinkel, confident, as he always is, that he'll be victorious on Thursday night at Maple Leaf Gardens when he faces the Canadian Champion and #1 Contender, the Crusader, in a Texas Death Match!  We're ready for our first match, Nick DeCarlo is in the ring, and here comes his opponent, Chris Tolos.  Let's go to Norm Kimber for our opening contest."

MATCH #1 - 1 fall, 10 minute time limit:
Chris Tolos defeats Nick DeCarlo after coming off the 2nd rope with a stomp to the head of DeCarlo, leading to the pinfall.

Layton: "We're back on Maple Leaf Wrestling, and ready for our next contest.  Terry Yorkston is waiting in the ring, and here comes former World Heavyweight Champion Verne Gagne."

MATCH #2 - 1 fall, 10 minute time limit:
Verne Gagne defeats Terry Yorkston after locking Yorkston in the Sleeperhold for the win.

Layton: "A very impressive victory for Verne Gagne.  Verne will be in action on Thursday night, as he squares off against the Beast from Berlin, Baron Von Raschke.  When we return, we'll see Greg Valentine and the Masked Canadian in tag team action, and we'll talk with Rufus R. Jones and Dino Bravo as well."

MATCH #3 - 1 fall, 10 minute time limit:
Greg Valentine & The Masked Canadian defeat Bob Marcus & Brian Mackney after the Canadian slipped something into his mask and KO’d Marcus with a headbutt.

Layton: "As you can see fans, Greg Valentine and this man who calls himself the Masked Canadian, steal another victory, it was obvious that the Canadian slipped something into his mask.  Unfortunately referee Tiger Tasker was busy getting Greg Valentine out of the ring, and he didn't see it.  When we come back, we'll talk with Rufus R. Jones and Dino Bravo, who will face Valentine and the Canadian in a tag team match on Thursday, and whoever is pinned or made to submit in that match will leave Toronto!"

Dino Bravo and Rufus R. Jones walk in and join Layton on the set.

Layton: "Gentlemen, one of the most anticipated matches on this upcoming show at Maple Leaf Gardens this Thursday night will see the two of you square off in tag team action against Greg Valentine and the Masked Canadian.  The man that loses the fall in that match must leave Toronto.  Obviously that must be weighing heavily on your minds."

Rufus: "Every time I watch Valentine and the Canadian in the ring, it makes my blood boil!  Those two good-for-nothin' weasels have no regard for the rules, they cheat any chance they can, they wanna hurt people!  That don't sit well with me.  After Thursday night at the Gardens, one of 'em is gonna have to leave Toronto for good!  You know what I say to that, Layton?  I say good riddance!"

Bravo: "Canadian, I haven't forgot what you did to me.  I made the mistake of trusting you, and you turned on me.  Well, Thursday night, it's time for some payback!  After we beat you, I'm going to rip that mask right off your head, and then we'll finally find out who's underneath!"

Layton: "Fans, there's a lot of bad blood involved in this match, and as we've said, whoever loses the fall in that match will have to leave Toronto!  You certainly don't want to miss that one.  When we come back, the High Flyers, Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell will be in action."

MATCH #4 - 1 fall, 10 minute time limit:
Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell defeat Golden Boy Apollo & Gary McLaughlin after they hit Apollo with a double dropkick, then Brunzell pins him.

Layton: "I will say this, these two young men, Gagne and Brunzell, are one of the finest tag teams I've seen in quite some time.  On Thursday night they will challenge the Love Brothers for the World Tag Team Titles, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them out here, next week, as the new World Tag Team Champions!  Right now we've got to take our final commercial break, and when we come back, Carlos Rocha goes one on one with John Tolos, and that will be the most falls to the curfew."

MATCH #5 - Most falls to the curfew:
Carlos Rocha defeats John Tolos, 2 falls to 0.

Fall #1: Rocha pinned Tolos after three consecutive dropkicks.
Fall #2: Rocha pinned Tolos with a sunset flip.

Verne Gagne walks out and joins Layton on the set.

Layton: "Verne, you will be in action on Thursday night against a man they call the Beast of Berlin, Baron Von Raschke."

Gagne: "I've been here in this territory for a few months now, and I had to listen to Baron Von Raschke come out on TV and insult these people, and not only these great Canadian fans, but American wrestlers and the American people as well.  There was one thing in particular that stuck in my mind, though, and that was Baron Von Raschke claiming to be an amateur wrestling Champion.  As you know, Lord, I pride myself on my wrestling ability, my mat-wrestling skills, and I take pride in my amateur career, as well as my professional career.  On Thursday night at Maple Leaf Gardens, we'll see who the better man, the better wrestler, really is!"

Layton: "That does it for another week of Maple Leaf Wrestling.  Next week, we'll have another action-packed hour of AWA wrestling for you.  We'll see Carlos Rocha in singles action, as well as U.S. Champion The Sheik.  We'll also see World Tag Team Champions The Love Brothers in action next week, although whether or not they're still the Champions remains to be seen, but either way, they'll be in action right here next week on AWA Maple Leaf Wrestling.  Until then, I'm Lord Athol Layton, saying so long and we'll see you at ringside."

Very good show.

Bock and the Crusader continues to be one of the best programs going today.

Valentine and the Canadian make for a dominating tag-team. I'm looking forward to seeing them against Rufus and Bravo.

I really like the way that you're using Verne Gagne. His match v/s BVR should be a candidate for match of the year.

Huge win for Carlos Rocha. I've read about him, never seen him, but when anyone picks up a 2-0 win against the Golden Greek it has to be huge news.

I, too, am interested where you are going to take Rocha.

Gagne is going to have his hands full with the Baron. I like the way you have brought up the Baron's amateur background. Did he attend Michigan State?

The High Flyers will take the titles. You heard it here first.

The loser leaves Toronto match will draw the fans in. I am waiting patiently, but it is hard.

Bockwinkel vs. The Crusader in a Death Match is the drawing card here.

Great show.

I'm not sure, I thought I had read somewhere that in MACW in the late 70s, they claimed he was a German wrestling Champion, so I just went with that!  Smiley
