TOURNAMENT FOR THE WWA TAG TEAM TITLE AFTERNOON SESSION
Bell Time: 1:00

 
Dignitaries are introduced to the crowd.  Fabulous Moolah, Duke Keamuka, George and Sandy Scott, Danny Hodge, & Les Thatcher represent the WWA Board of Directors, New York Governor Hugh L. Carey, and Rochester Mayor Thomas Ryan are all greeted with polite applause.

ROUND 1 - All matches 1 fall with a 20 minute time limit

 
MATCH #1
 
NAWA & SWCW Champions Rip Hawk & Swede Hanson  vs  Carlos Rocha (Substituting for the injured Luis Martinez) & El Sicodelico

 
Rocha & Sicodelico try to keep the double champions off balance with high-flying maneuvers.  This works for several minutes, but Big Swede & The Profile turn the tables.  Hawk pile-drives Rocha and gets the pin while Hanson has Sicodelico in a bearhug.

WINNERS:  RIP HAWK & SWEDE HANSON @7:14

 
 
MATCH #2

Chief White Owl & Billy Red Cloud  vs  Dino Bravo & Gino Brito


This match is all Bravo & Brito.  The Canadian superstars dominate with scientific moves.  The end comes when Bravo catches Red Cloud in the airplane spin.

 
WINNERS:  DINO BRAVO & GINO BRITO @5:49
 
 
MATCH #3
 
Pak Song Nam & Kim Duk w/George Cannon  vs  GCW champions Mr. Wrestling 1 & 2

Brutal match as the Korean Assassins take it to the masked heroes.  All four men wind up in the ring at the end.  #1 captures Nam in the sleeperhold while #2 hits the "Million Dollar Kneelift" on Duk for the three count.

 
WINNERS:  MR. WRESTLING 1 & 2 @9:22
 
 
MATCH #4
 
Bobby Bold Eagle & Joe Lightfoot  vs  CWA Champions Dennis Condrey & Phil Hickerson
 
The Indians don't know what hit them.  Condrey & Hickerson work like a well-oiled machine.  The end comes when Condrey nails Bold Eagle with a double underhook suplex.
 
WINNERS:  DENNIS CONDREY & PHIL HICKERSON @4:44
 
 
MATCH #5
 
Rocky Johnson & Don Muraco  vs  Kenji Shibuya & Kengo Kimura w/Gen. George Cannon

Muraco & Johnson look great as they dismantle the Asian team of Cannon.  Muraco shows power as Johnson provides the quickness.  The inexperience of Kimura allows him to be caught in a Johnson abdominal stretch and Shibuya cannot make the save.

MATCH #6
 
The Von Brauners w/Gerhardt Kaiser  vs  Tommy Rich & Ricky Fields
 
Rich looks awesome, but the timing of this team is off for some reason.  Fields is just not clicking with Rich on this afternoon.  The end comes when the Von Brauners double clothesline Fields to get the pinfall win.
 
WINNERS:  THE VON BRAUNERS @9:21
 
 
MATCH #7
 
Chavo & Mando Guerrero  vs  Mil Mascaras & Dos Caras

Fantastic fast-paced match.  Both teams trade the advantage.  Nearing the time limit, both teams kick it into overdrive.  In the end, Mascaras has Mando pinned after a high coss-bodyblock while Chavo has Caras pinned following a backbreaker.  The referee counts three.  Both teams think they've won.  The referee raises the hands of the Guerreros as he determined that Chavo and Caras were the legal men in the ring.

WINNERS:  CHAVO & MANDO GUERRERO @18:51

 
 
MATCH #8

Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell  vs  Killer Karl Krupp & Baron Von Raschke w/ Gerhardt Kaiser

 
The Germans underestimate their younger foes.  The Baron and the Killer take turns over-powering the Hi-flyers.  After each move, the Germans taunt the fans with their greatness.  After several minutes of beating on Gagne, The Germans get careless. As Von Raschke attempts a backdrop,  Gagne leapfrogs him and makes the tag.  Brunzell enters and rocks both Germans with forearms.  Gagne re-enters the fray and he and The Baron tumble from the ring.  Brunzell nails Krupp with a perfect dropkick and slaps on the spinning toe hold for the victory.

WINNERS:  GREG GAGNE & JIM BRUNZELL @13:02

 
 
 
MATCH #9
 
WWA HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Dick the Bruiser  vs  Otto Wanz

 
Otto and Bruiser shake hands before the bell rings.  Wanz seems concerned with the condition of Bruiser's left arm  It appears to be completely useless.  The match begins and Wanz is reluctant to press the issue with Bruiser's injury.  Bruiser slaps Wanz and yells "Fight me like a man!"  From there, Otto goes on with his game plan.  Science is the theme here as Wanz out-wrestles the one-armed Bruiser.  Suplex after suplex  drills Bruiser into the canvas.  Bruiser attempts to battle back, but has little affect on the Austrian.  The crowd anticipates the usual comeback from Bruiser, but this afternoon it is not to be.  Wanz sets up for the Samoan drop and three seconds later, we have a new WWA Champion!!!  Dejected and hurt, Bruiser is helped to the dressing room by Wanz.  Bruiser's heart is the only reason he has fought through the pain and held on to the title for this long.  The fans seem to think that they have seen the last match of this legendary figure.  They may be right!
 
WINNER and NEW WWA HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION:  OTTO WANZ @22:31

QUARTER-FINAL #1 - All Quarter-final matches are 1 fall/30 min. time limit
 
Rip Hawk & Swede Hanson  vs  Dino Bravo & Gino Brito


Hawk and Hanson focus on Brito as they know Bravo has the one thing they can't match...speed.  Brito takes a brutal beating at the hands of the veterans.  Eventually, Brito manages to make the tag and Bravo comes in like a man possessed.  Dropkicks, clotheslines, and bodyslams are his weapons of choice.  Bravo catches an elbow to the brow and blood starts pouring from the wound.  Bravo's face is covered in blood and he can't see.  He swings wildly and misses his target over and over.  The referee has no choice but to stop the match due to excessive bleeding.

 
WINNERS:  RIP HAWK & SWEDE HANSON - By referee stoppage @12:49
 
 
QUARTER-FINAL #2
 
Mr. Wrestling 1 & 2  vs  Dennis Condrey & Phil Hickerson

 
Classic match.  Back and forth action in this one.  Neither team can get an advantage.  Late in the match, Condrey has #2 tied up in an abdominal stretch.  2 is having trouble breaking the hold as Hickerson is aiding his partner out of the sight of the referee.  #1 can't take it any more and breaks up the hold.  This draws Phil in and Condrey joins him in a beat down of #1.  All the while, 2 is recovering on the canvas.  The heels set up #1 for a spike piledriver.  #1 twists his way out and gives Hickerson a backdrop.  2 slips behind Condrey and surprises him with a rolling reverse for the pin.
 
WINNERS:  MR. WRESTLING 1 & 2 @18:45
 
 
 
QUARTER-FINAL #3

Rocky Johnson & Don Muraco  vs  The Von Brauners

 
What a match.  The NACW stars really do a number on the Germans.  They look on their way to victory until Kaiser gets involved.  Johnson prepares to deliver a dropkick when Kaiser trips him from ringside.  Rocky turns to strike the evil manager when he is kneed in the back by Karl.  Johnson tumbles to ringside with a thud.  This draws Muraco into the ring, but he is pushed back to his corner by the referee.  This allows Kurt to deliver a neckbreaker on the floor.  Johnson is rolled back into the ring and Karl covers him.  Muraco makes the save and drags his unconscious partner back to his corner.  Muraco tags himself in and cleans house for a while.  However, Muraco could not overcome the odds and is pinned following a double bodyslam.

WINNERS:  THE VON BRAUNERS @15:14

 
 
 
QUARTER-FINAL #4

Chavo & Mando Guerrero  vs  Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell


This is the match of the quarter-finals.  Speed, speed, and more speed is the order of the day in this one.  Surprisingly, the Gurreros refrain from illegal tactics and the match is a scientific encounter.  Mando takes the advantage on Brunzell midway through this match.  Jimmy struggles to tag Gagne as the Guerreros tag in and out.  Brunzell manages to avoid a Chavo clothesline and tags Gagne.  Gagne takes control and has both brothers rocking.  Eventually Gagne locks on the sleeper on Mando and as Brunzell dropkicks Chavo from the ring, Mando takes a nap.

 
WINNERS:  GREG GAGNE & JIM BRUNZELL @26:01

SEMI-FINAL #1 - Both matches in this round are 1 fall/45 minute time limit
 
Rip Hawk & Swede Hanson  vs  Mr. Wrestling 1 & 2


Two veteran teams here put on a show for the New York fans.  The heels pound the masked heroes for a good portion of this battle.  1 & 2 take turns being beaten up.  Hawk and Hanson focus on weakening #1.  They use every dirty trick they know to conquer #1.  Hawk sets him up for a piledriver and crashes the head of the hero into the mat.  Hawk covers 1, but he kicks out.  Hawk tags in Hanson who wraps 1 up in a bearhug.  1 looks on the verge of passing out when he claps his hands together around the head of big Swede.  Again and again and again he does it until Hanson releases his grip, giving 1 a chance to tag 2.  2 enters, but is caught by a Swede clothesline.  Hanson picks up 2 and places him on the top turnbuckle.  Hanson turns to seek approval from Hawk and as he turns around, he is met square in the jaw by the "Million Dollar Kneelift."  Three seconds later, we have our first finalists.


WINNERS:  MR. WRESTLING 1 & 2 @19:12

 
 
 
SEMI-FINAL #2

The Von Brauners  vs  Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell


The Von Brauners are out for revenge for their fallen brethren.  They brutalize the youngsters with power moves.  Gagne fights back and at one point applies the sleeper on Karl.  Kurt breaks it up and goes on the offense.  Gagne tags in Brunzell, but he can muster little offense.  The Von Brauners look dominant as Kurt finishes off Brunzell with a standing backbreaker.  The youngsters put up a valiant effort, but just couldn't handle the power of the Germans.


WINNERS:  THE VON BRAUNERS @13:00

 
 
MATCH #7
AWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE (90 minute time limit)
 
Nick Bockwinkel  vs  Antonio Inoki

 
Normally, a World title match would be the final match of the evening, but the board decided that this match would give the finalists a chance to rest.
Bockwinkel changes his strategy for this rematch.  He has brought his running shoes with him.  Every chance he gets, the Champion ducks outside to work the clock.  Inoki begins to chase Nick to try to get him to wrestle.  When he does catch him, Inoki proves why he is one of the top names in the sport.  Inoki uses abdominal stretches, rear chinlocks, headlocks, dropkicks, etc. to tire the champion.  Inoki hits a bodyslam and makes the cover....1.....Bockwinkel kicks out.  Inoki catches Bockwinkel with an inside cradle....1.......2.......again, Nick kicks out.  A cross-bodyblock......1......2.......foot on the ropes.  Backbreaker....1....foot on the ropes.  Bock grabs Inoki's tights and throws him through the ropes.  As he steps up on the ring apron, Nick swings, but Inoki ducks.  Inoki hits a sunset flip........1........2........3!!!!  No, wait.  Nick's foot is on the ropes.  Inoki hits a rolling cradle......1.........2.........ropes again.  Nick low-blows Inoki and takes the advantage.  Bulldog by Bock......1........2......Inoli kicks out. Knee-drops and elbow-drops..........1..........2..........kick out.  Piledriver.........1...........2..........kick out again.  Sleeper!!!  Inoki's arm is raised.........once...........twice............Inoki shows signs of life.  Inoki catches the Champ with a chop.  Nick runs.  Inoki chases.  Inoki rolls Bockwinkel up..........1...........2..........pull of the tights and reversal........1.............2.............another reversal.............1............2.........kick out by the Champ!  Both men are exhausted.  Nick throws Inoki into the ropes.  Leapfrog.  Dropkick sends the Champion to the floor.  1....2.....3......4......5........6.........7.........8.........9...............
............10!!!
The Champion has been counted out!  Both combatants are helped to the dressing room as the crowd cheers wildly!

 
WINNER:  ANTONIO INOKI - By Countout @82:54
 
 

TOURNAMENT FINAL MATCH - 1 fall 60 minute time limit
 
Mr. Wrestling 1 & 2  vs  The Von Brauners


Great final.  Both teams are tired, but there is still fire in their eyes.  The teams trade the advantage back and forth for fifteen minutes.  Soon, The masked team gets the edge.  1 & 2 work the Germans' heads and necks with headlocks, snap mares, head scissors, chinlocks, etc.  The Germans eventually turn the tables and weaken their opponents with power moves.  This goes on for several minutes.  2 reverses an Irish whip and Karl crashes into the turnbuckles.  2 prepares for the kneelift, but karl moves and 2 collides with the referee.  All four men begin to battle in center ring, when, out of nowhere, Krupp and Von Rashke charge the ring and pummel the masked men.  Gagne and Brunzell break it up and chase Krupp and Von Rashke to the back.  As the referee recovers, he sees Kurt on top of 2 and makes the count.........1...........2..........................3!!!! The Von Brauners have done it!!!  They are the new WWA Tag Team Champions.  Kaiser's men are 2 for 2.  What is next for the Germans?

Great win by The Von Brauners here. A loaded tourney.
 
The first round went as I thought it would go. Interesting Fields and Rich not clicking. I was hoping Caras and Mascaras would come on top.
 
H&H taking out Bravo was awesome. A big time win.
 
Wrestling I and II looking good. They got robbed.
 
Wanz with a great win. I hope Bruiser takes some time off.
 
Inoki is looking stupendous, taking his level up a notch.
 
Great WWA action. Well done.

Two very good shows. You have two new champions that will take you up in the AWA looking good. That was two nights of hot tag action that people would have killed to see live.

Great to see the Von Brauner's getting the push. They just came off a successful run in Montreal and it's great to see them wreaking havoc in the Northern part of the US now. What a greta night of tag team action!

Outstanding tag tourny. I'm glad the teams from the CWA were able to take part.
 
That being said, the biggest news from the day isn't the new tag champions, but the Bruiser losing his title to the sausage sucking Austrian... Roll out the barrell because Wanz will probably drink it all.
 
Great contest between Inoki and Bock. There is too much left between those two to not keep them going. Congrats to the new champions, but I think there might be only a short reign with the type of challengers that shoed up for this event.

now that was a good show. lot of good tourney outs.
glad to see wanz win the belt. the bockwinkle fiinsh was good as long as it's not over done in the future..
