AWA GCW Marrietta 10/6/77 'Bolt v/s BlackJack
Oct 12th, 2007, 9:23am

Georgia Championship Wrestling
October 6, 1977
Marrietta, Georgia
Marrietta Civic Center
Ring Announcer: Freddie Miller
Refs: Dick Dunn and Ron West
Bell Time: 7:30pm

1st Event of the Evening
Lanny Poffo defeated Kim Duk w/ Baron Von Turco

Poffo withstands Duk’s martial arts attack and comes away with the victory following a sunset flip.

2nd Event of the Evening
Killer Karl Krupp defeated Cowboy Bob Kelly

Kelly took the fight to Krupp but in the end the cowboy was forced to submit to the Brain Claw.

3rd Event of the Evening
“Mr. Action” Mike Jackson and “Golden Boy” Paul Christy defeated “Bruiser” Bill White and James J. Dillon

Jackson and Christy utilize their scientific skills to overcome the rulebreaking tactics of White and Dillon. Jackson pins Dillon following a missile dropkick. Dillon complains that he was a victim of a fast count only to see Ron West turn a deaf ear.

4th Event of the Evening
Georgia TV Championship Match
Ricky Gibson v/s Mad Dog Vachon w/ Ron Wright

Gibson and the Mad Dog both come out looking for blood in this match. In no time flat they throw out the rulebook as they attack each other with reckless abandon. Referee Dynamite Dick Dunn is left with no other option but to DQ both men.

Main Event of the Evening
Georgia Heavyweight Championship Match
© Thunderbolt Patterson defeated BlackJack Laine w/ Sputnik Monroe

The cowboy from Calgary brings his full throttle attack into this match. Laine relies on his scientific skills, high flying and brawling as he carries the match to the champion. Patterson had trouble with the first two but when BlackJack went to brawling he played right into ‘Bolt’s game and paid the price. Patterson took over in the brawling and dished out a whooping to Laine and his manager before pinning the cowboy following a headbutt. Thunderbolt Patterson retains the Georgia Heavyweight Championship.

Don't remember seeing Ricky Gibson much, except in some Southeastern matches. He must have been great if he could have held his own against Mad Dog.

T'Bolt always seemed like the man in Georgia when I saw and heard the crowd on TBS.
Great title defense here.

Too bad for Kelly here but I have to remember, he was in latter stages of his career.

Good to see Jackson, White, and Dillon featured here. I will follow this rivalry closely.

Love having Georgia back up.

Ricky Gibson's work at this point was at or near the same level as Dibiase in '80 and '81. Gibson was the total package in the early to mid 70's and many old time GCW fans rank him above Tommy Rich in every category. He was considered one of the top workers in the world prior to walking out on CWF just when he was about to receive a huge push. He seemed to allow personal problems to hold him back and was never really pushed at that same level again.
