AWA-CWA 10/12/77 and TV (Rich vs. Lawler)
Oct 12th, 2007, 5:56pm

AWA-CWA
10/12/77 from the Civic Auditorium, Nashville, TN

1)      Steve Lawler defeats Bobby Jones with a fist drop off the second rope that he follows up with a full nelson for the submission victory. Lawler, with out the King to guide him, seems almost mentally deficient.

2)      Ricky Fields and Steve Regal defeat “Mr. Ebony” Tom Jones and George Welles after a Fields drop kick takes down Jones and Regal seals the deal with a cannonball splash.

3)      Paul DeMarco defeats the fire tossing Mephisto with a big elbow to the brow that floors the madman.

4)      The Scottish Giant falls to the veteran duo of Tommy Gilbert and Jackie Fargo. Lord John Raven again doesn’t accompany the massive man to the ring and this time the Giant can’t keep focused enough to fall the more experienced duo. Both Gilbert and Fargo have to cover the giant to get the fall.

5)      Randy Savage and Dutch Mantell battle to a double count out that sees both men brawl their way into the crowd, once again requiring the Nashville PD to step in and haul the men away for creating a public disruption.

6)      Tommy Rich defeats the Professional with a Thesz press that he follows with a spinning toehold.

7)      Bobby Jaggers and Tito Montez defeat AWA Southern Tag Team Champions Dennis Condrey
and Phil Hickerson by disqualification when the Miser interjects himself in the match, delivering a loaded headbutt to both of the challengers.

8)      Ronnie Garvin defeats Black Angus Campbell with a figure four leg lock after delivering a “Garvin stomp” to all the joints of the Scotsman.

Championship Wrestling from Memphis
Broadcast 10/13/77 and recorded for further syndication

Lance Russell and Dave Brown welcome everyone to Championship Wrestling and announce that we are only weeks away from the huge night of action that will be coming on Halloween night in Nashville, TN. In the telecast, we will hear from one of the big players in that night, the challenger for the AWA Junior Heavyweight Championship, “Superstar” Bill Dundee. Also, in action we will see Derek Draper squaring off with Paul DeMarco, Kelly Kiniski doing battle with the masked newcomer the Hawaiian Flash, and Tommy Rich taking on Steve Lawler in the television main event. Al of that and more will be ready after these messages.

The Hawaiian Flash starts off today’s matches with a victory over Kelly Kiniski after Tojo Yamamoto and his masked goon the Professional assaulted the Flash mid match. Kiniski, angered at the disruption of a very even contest starts running his mouth at Yamamoto san, leaving himself wide open for an assault of his own at the hands of the Professional. The commercial break comes with both the Flash and Kiniski trying to regain their feet.

After the break, a replay of the assault is shown and the Hawaiian Flash joins Lance Russell. The Flash tells Lance that he’s tired of that black masked thug getting away with his attacks so the Flash wants him in the ring one on one in the MSC Monday night. The Flash then states that he’s well aware that the Professional beat him down last Monday in the MSC, but this week the Flash will have someone watching his back. Kelly Kiniski walks up and states that since nothing was settled between the two men this week on TV thanks to the Professional, he wanted the Flash again next week back here on Championship Wrestling. The Flash shakes the young Kiniski’s hand and the rematch is set for next week.

After another commercial break, Randy Savage, accompanied by the Southern Tag Team Champions Dennis Condrey and Phil Hickerson, takes down “Mr. Ebony” Tom Jones with a brutal running axe handle that is capped by a flying elbow smash. After the bell, all three men start roughing up Jones until their manager the Miser motions them to the interview area. With his charges in tow, the Miser tells how he has had enough of the redneck trio of Jaggers, Mantell, and Montez. His men are finished taking them on in a fair fight because the Miser’s men know that because of their inherent ability there will never be a fair fight with those brawling bozos. Randy Savage is a better man any night of the week than Dutch Mantell and the Texas twosome of Jaggers and Montez can’t beat Condrey and Hickerson no matter what people think they’ve seen. The Miser calls victory of his men the closest thing to money in the bank.

Derek Draper joins Lance in the interview area before his match and tells Russell flat out that he has been helping Ron Garvin because he wants to see the best man on top of the CWA holding the Southern Heavyweight Championship. Draper then runs down Jerry Lawler, calling him a coward and saying he’s only using his mentally deficient brother as hired muscle because he knows he’s not the toughest in the territory anymore. Draper then proceeds to take down a very strong challenge from Paul DeMarco with the cobra hold.

Lance Russell now welcomes Bill Dundee to the interview area and Bill talks about how he’s now taking his battle with Roddy Piper out of the CWA, all across the AWA. He does so with the knowledge that his final opportunity for the title comes in Nashville on Halloween night and while Piper may call him a vanilla midget, inside a steel cage it isn’t the size of the man in the fight, but the size of the fight in the man.

When Championship Wrestling returns, The Medics defeat the game opposition of Big Bill Howard and Don Ross after Medic #2 locked on the claw hold on Ross. Even the muscle man can’t withstand the positional pressure applied and he submits.

As the main event nears, Steve Lawler joins Lance in the interview area and in a highly unorthodox interview espouses his love of puppies, kitties, and Tonka trucks. When asked the whereabouts of his brother, the lamebrain Lawler replies “…that brother Jerry has gone to Gerogia to get groceries.” When Lance pries further, Steve says that his brother said something about “bringing home the bacon from Atlanta.” Steve then waves and shakes hands with all the studio audience around the ring before the TV main event against Tommy Rich.

Tommy Rich shows a great deal of hustle in his defeat of Steve Lawler. The fans at ringside cheer on Rich, but only after Lawler shows a vicious streak that makes one wonder if Steve is a time bomb waiting to go off. A Thesz Press from rich followed by a spinning toehold gets the victory. After the match, Tommy tells Lance that if the Professional is going to take on the Hawaiian Flash Monday night in the MSC, he’d take on the big bear himself and show the fans that the next big name in wrestling is all fired up.

After the interview, Lance and Davy run down the results and remind fans in Jonesboro, Tupelo, Louisville, Nashville, Knoxville, and right here in Memphis to come and see live CWA wrestling action.

Draper gets a big win over DeMarco on TV. He must be double tough.

The Redneck trio may make The Miser eat his words.

I am enjoying Garvin and his reign as Southern champ.

Fields and Regal look to be a great young team.

Fargo and Gilbert with a great handicap win.

Top-notch CWA action.

Fantastic shows as always.  Some people don't have both oars in the water, poor Steve Lawler is in dry dock.  Rich is starting to roll.  I'm loving Savage here.  Ronnie G. looks great as champ.  Great job!

Trying to get a strong feel here rather, as one promoter put it, this being the Jerry Lawler Show. Feedback is always appricited, especially what your dislikes/complaints are about the CWA shows.
