AWA-CWA 10/13-15/77 Savage-Mantell in a cage!
Oct 15th, 2007, 3:27pm

AWA-CWA
10/13/77 from Jonesboro, AR

1)      Big Bill Howard and Butch Malone wrestle to a 10-minute draw.

2)      “Professor” Bill Ash defeats Mephisto with the Arkansas Whiplash.

3)      The Scottish Giant and Black Angus Campbell defeat “Mr. Ebony” Tom Jones and George Welles after Angus delivers a big gut wrench suplex and the Giant delivers a massive splash to Welles for the victory.

4)      Derek Draper defeats Steve Lawler with the cobra hold.

5)      Jackie Fargo defeats Pat Roach thanks to a big atomic knee drop.

6)      The Professional defeats Tommy Rich with a sleeper hold after Tojo Yamamoto buys his man time after Tommy had dropped him with a Thesz press.

7)      AWA Southern Tag Team champions Dennis Condrey and Phil Hickerson defeat Steve Regal and Ricky Fields after Hickerson drops Regal with what appear to be brass knuckles.

8)      Inside a steel cage, Dutch Mantell defeats Randy Savage after Savage tries to fly off the top of the cage and drop an elbow on a prone Mantell, Dutch limply rolls an arm over to get the 1-2-3.

AWA-CWA
10/15/77 from the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, TN

1)      Former Southern tag team champion Butch Malone defeats Don Ross with a bulldog headlock.

2)      Big Bill Howard shocks the crowd by getting the pin fall on “Mr. Ebony” Tom Jones with a big body slam. Jones is irate after the match, complaining he had his shoulder up, but he is blown off by the official.

3)      The Medics fall to the youthful duo of Steve Regal and Ricky Fields after Fields levels Medic #1 and Regal delivers a cannonball splash to get the pin. Fields and Regal seem to be hitting stride in the tag team division.

4)      The Hawaiian Flash defeats the Professional by count out after an early flurry of rolling arm drags sends the masked man rolling all the way to the arena floor. Rather than reengage the Flash, both Yamamoto san and his charge retreat to the back.

5)      In a taped fist match, Dutch Mantell defeats Randy Savage after decking the Miser’s wild man with repeated lefts and rights. Mantell gets the pin after a staggered Savage misses with a running double axe handle and the Dutchman rolls him up from behind.

6)      The BBC duo of Jim Breaks and Marc Rocco defeat Tommy Gilbert and Jackie Fargo after Black Angus Campbell attacks the Brits, pulling Rocco off the ring apron and slamming him hard into the concrete before he delivered a gut wrench suplex to the smaller Breaks.

7)      Sugar Bear Harris defeats Tommy Rich with a massive splash in the corner. Rich makes the mistake of trying to slam the big Bear and that seemed to injure his back.

8)      Jerry “the King” Lawler takes a disqualification loss against Derek Draper after the Clown Prince of wrestling Steve Lawler turns the even contest into a beat down of Draper until Southern Heavyweight Champion Ron Garvin hits the ring and tried to fight off the Lawlers. Once Draper regained his feet, the King and his jester retreat to the locker room.

9)      Bobby Jaggers and Tito Montez defeat the AWA Southern Tag Team Champions Dennis Condrey and Phil Hickerson after a bandaged and still bloody Randy Savage comes to the ring and breaks up a pinning attempt by Jaggers. This draws Dutch Mantel, dressed in his street clothes, out of the locker room and all 6 men brawl away in the ring until the rest of the locker room clears out and separates them.

10)      In a special attraction, “Superstar” Bill Dundee defeats Southern Heavyweight Champion Ron Garvin in a non-title contest. Dundee is able to gain this pip on Roddy Piper by rolling up the champion with a small package. Garvin shakes his head after the fall, but graciously raises the hand of the victor.

Not sure where the reference to Piper fits in but a great upset by Dundee. I hope Garvin responds with a win later.

Great showing by Jaggers and Montez against the Southern tag champs.

Lawler is lucky Steve interferred. Draper had his number.

Great win by Fargo over Roach.

Tough loss by Rich.

Regal and Fields look like a great young team.

Fantastic shows in CWA.

All I can say is two very good shows. The action on both are top of the line. Randy Savage is looking good to me and will make a name for himself. Very good tag matches and the big fight at the end was a good touch.

Piper has wrestled Ron Garvin in recent events and failed to get a victory. Dundee has now beaten Garvin and has that accomplishment over him.

CWA continues to impress.  I like Savage, but at this stage in his career, Mantel would probably get the best of him.  Good booking.  Rich is the next big star in CWA.  Dundee with a real nice win.  Great, great stuff here.

Garvin vs. Dundee would be pretty good. I remember Savage showing up in Detroit in 1979 during the dying days of the promotion. He feued with Pampero Firpo for a short time. He had been a jobber a few years earlier when Angelo and Lanny held the tag titles.

The reason for the Mantell-Savage cage match to end things is because it is a feud that I've been building up for a while and I feel that it benifits the audience to see them in that forum before the things to come in this rivalry. It also helps establish new stars and that is something that any territory can use more of.

Glad folks like the tag scene in Memphis. One of the things I've always been partial to, as a fan,  is great tag team wrestling and I hope I've been able to bring that to this territory. As long as the public likes what they see in that manner, they will see more of it.

Thanks to all for the feedback.
