NWA Championship Wrestling from Amarillo
KFDA Studios
October 14, 1977

Steve Stack and Paul Boesch open up this week’s program and talk about tonight’s main event, which will see NWA International Heavyweight Champion Dory Funk Jr. wrestle against Gino Hernandez, who has the chance to hold every title in Amarillo if he can win tonight’s match. We’ll see Paul Orndorff and Bobby Eaton in tag team action against Bruiser Bob Leuck and Tarzan Tyler. Also, Gary Hart’s monstrous duo of Mr. Fuji and Masa Saito will be here, and Saito is just under two weeks away from his NWA World Heavyweight Title with Chief Wahoo McDaniel. And also, “The King of Wrestling” Rufus R. Jones will be here in action, as will his old friend Porkchop Cash. Mick McManus’ 7-Minute Challenge will return next week. We have a full show for you today because we are just under two weeks from the massive Supershow in Lubbock at the Municipal Coliseum!

-1- “The King of Wrestling” Rufus R. Jones opens up today’s program by taking on the youngster Doug Sommers in our first match of the afternoon. Sommers is clearly a young man who has a bright future in wrestling because he manages to take The King down to the mat and really work him over in the opening moments, but Jones fights back and dominates most of the match. Rufus uses most of his usual offense to keep Doug Sommers down and then finishes him off with a big headbutt that seems to knock Doug completely out. Jones makes the pin to the win the match and as he does this, Porkchop Cash makes his way over the interview area and claps. Rufus celebrates after the three count and then spots his old friend and hurries over to the interview area happily.

Paul Boesch interviews both Porkchop Cash and “The King of Wrestling” Rufus R. Jones over at the interview area. Jones seems very glad to see his old friend and says it’s great to see Cash here in Amarillo and it’s such a happy occasion, but Cash says he doesn’t feel the same way. Porkchop says he didn’t come here for some happy reunion; he came here because he’s disgusted by Rufus R. Jones wearing a cape and crown, calling himself the “King of Wrestling.” Porkchop Cash says Rufus sure as heck is not his king and he can’t believe the Rufus he knew let the fans get in his head. Cash says he doesn’t respect who Rufus R. Jones has become and so he’s come to Amarillo to show the world what a real African-American athlete is. Rufus is upset and says he’s not going to be insulted by anyone, not even by an old friend. Cash says Rufus is no friend of his and then slaps him across the face! Porkchop then challenges Jones to a match in Lubbock on October 26 and says he wants to show the world that Rufus R. Jones has gone soft. Jones says you better believe he accepts and he’s going beat some respect into Cash in front all of his people in Lubbock!

-2- Bobby Eaton & Paul Orndorff are the #1 Contenders to the Western States Tag Team Championships and today they face the tough team of Bruiser Bob Leuck & Tarzan Tyler in our next match. Eaton and Orndorff have really become a well-oiled machine and they work extremely well together in this match against two bigger men. Tyler and Leuck do use their size advantage to their advantage trap Eaton in their corner at one point, but Bobby dives across the ring and takes in Orndorff. Paul comes in and cleans house on both opponents, before shooting Tarzan Tyler off the ropes and driving him into the canvas with the patented powerslam. Paul Orndorff pins Tarzan Tyler and gets the three count to get yet another impressive win headed into the Western States Tag Team Championship match on 10/26 against Jerry Brisco and Gino Hernandez.

Steve Stack interviews Gary Hart and his men Masa Saito, Mr. Fuji, and a new arrival, who has long brown hair, a beard, and looks to be over 400 lbs. Hart says that this massive man is the man from Halstead Street in Chicago that he’s been talking about in recent weeks and he’s called the One Man Gang because that’s exactly what he is. One Man Gang then says that he’s challenging the so-called “big man” of Amarillo Chris Taylor to be the first man he destroys in Amarillo because he wants to make an immediate impact here. Gary Hart elaborates and says that the Gang has officially challenged Taylor to face him on October 26, the same night that Mr. Fuji will wrestle Johnny Weaver and the same night that Masa Saito will take the NWA World Heavyweight Title from Wahoo McDaniel. Saito speaks and says in broken English that after he’s done with Wahoo, all he’ll be able to do is sit at home with his big, fat wife, watching TV and eating popcorn because he’ll never be able to wrestle again!

-3- In our next match, Masa Saito & Mr. Fuji with Gary Hart & One Man Gang take on the team of Ricky Thompson & Buddy Wayne in our next match. When Buddy Wayne sees Saito and Fuji charging the ring, he thinks better of the whole situation and simply bails on the match, leaving Thompson to face these monsters alone. Ricky is completely destroyed by Saito and Fuji for the next several minutes because Gary Hart orders them to continue to punish the young man. Eventually, he allows Masa to pin Ricky after a third Saito Suplex, but the beating continues after the match. Chief Wahoo McDaniel hits the ring almost immediately and tears into Saito with chops across the chest, but Mr. Torture is right back at him with chops of his own! Mr. Fuji  and One Man Gang attack from behind, but soon Johnny Weaver & Chris Taylor enter the fray and Gary Hart calls off his troops. Hart’s men look like they want to stay and fight, but they listen to their boss and head for the back. McDaniel is furious in the ring and grabs the microphone and says that he’s not just going to beat Saito in Lubbock, he’s going to end the man’s career!

Before our main event, Paul Boesch interviews NWA International Heavyweight Champion Dory Funk Jr., who says he’s going to have to have eyes in the back to his head, so to speak, during tonight’s title match against Gino Hernandez. Dory says he knows Bobby Davis and his opponent for Lubbock, Robert Fuller, will try and get involved, so he has a contingency plan that he’ll keep quiet about for now. He knows that putting all that aside, Gino is a great wrestler and is very capable of taking any title on any given night so he expects one of the toughest matches of his entire career. He also says that Robert Fuller’s been taunting him for a while now and in Lubbock, he’s going to give him what he’s got coming to him.

-4- In the main event of this broadcast, NWA International Heavyweight Champion Dory Funk Jr. defended his championship gold against Western States Champion & ½ of the Western States Tag Team Champions Gino Hernandez with Bobby Davis and Robert Fuller. Throughout the first several minutes of the match, Davis and Fuller get involved several times without the referee noticing and help Gino gain the advantage over Dory Funk Jr. This seems to stop when Dick Murdoch makes his way down to the ring and begins rallying the fans behind Dory Funk Jr. In the final minutes of the match, Funk has the advantage and seems to be setting up Gino for the Spinning Toe Hold so he tries to signal for Davis and Fuller to interfere. Davis goes and grabs the International Heavyweight Title just as Robert Fuller gets on the apron and distracts the referee. Bobby Davis throws the belt to Gino Hernandez just as Dick Murdoch pulls Robert Fuller down and decks him. Murdoch then points the referee back around just as Gino Hernandez swings the International Heavyweight Title at Dory Funk’s head, which causes an immediately disqualification! GINO’S BEEN DQ’ED!! And, his belt shot missed as Dory kicks him in the gut. Murdoch rolls into the ring, grabs the belt, and then lays him out with a belt shot to the face! Fuller and Davis eventually pull the lifeless Gino Hernandez out of the ring as Dory Funk Jr. and Dick Murdoch share a good laugh in the squared circle.

Steve Stack and Paul Boesch talk about how Gino Hernandez, Robert Fuller, and Bobby Davis’ master plan back-fired tonight thanks to Dick Murdoch and so you have to believe that Gino will have a lot say next week here on Championship Wrestling from Amarillo. Also on next week’s program, our main event will feature Masa Saito, Mr. Fuji, and One Man Gang going up against NWA World Heavyweight Champion Chief Wahoo McDaniel, Johnny Weaver, and the giant Olympian Chris Taylor. We’ll have all that and more as we move towards the October 26 card in Lubbock. We’ll see you next week for more Championship Wrestling from Amarillo!

I want Funk to have a fair chance against Hernandez. I know he will come through.

Boy, I can't wait to see the Cash-Jones match. Should have the crowd in a frenzy.

It won't be a technical slam fest, but at these stages of their careers Taylor and The Gang will be dead even.

I love the Orndorff/ Eaton team. I will be rooting for them in the tag title match.

McDaniel and Saito will be intense.

Weaver and Fuji will be one I will watch. I hope Weaver locks that sleeper in tight.

Love the way the show sets up the matches.

Great happenings in Amarillo.

Great card. The AWA bwtter get their act together.l

Real good show.  Rufus looked good.  Cash is biting off more than he can chew.  Eaton/Orndorff look very good.  Hart's army looks tough.  Gino/Funk was real good.  Looking forward to the 26th.  Too bad the NWA will go down to defeat. undecided
