I was at and I am currently still at the Wrestle Fan Fest show in San Francisco.  First, I know there are a lot of people on this board who can’t wait to bash this event and to those people, shame on you.  It's said people have been bashing this show since its announcement.  I prefer to give each promoter a chance before bashing him or her.  If I get screwed I will blame myself for getting suckered in.

Yes, it is true there have been a number of problems at this event.  A number of wrestlers have no showed for various reasons for which I am not sure and I am not in the business of spreading rumors so I am not going to speculate as to those reasons.  It’s true there is lack of organization and among all else, communication.  With that said, I am actually here living the moment.  I am not sitting at home reading news boards looking to find out what negative there is about this show so they can say I told you so.  For those interested to really know who has showed for this event, below is a list of the talent who has and has not appeared.

The talent that has shown includes the following:
-The Great Muta
-Team 3D
-Lex Luger (I saw him before he got sick & went to the hospital)
-Mean Gene Okerlund
-James Mitchel
-Sunny
-Bobcat
-Barry Darsow
-Bill Eadie
-Butch Reed
-Dawn Marie
-Francine
-BabyDoll
-Don Frye
-Larry Zybysko
-Slick
-Maven
-Brian Knobs
-Chavo Guerrero Sr.
-Ernest Miller
-Koko B. Ware
-SharkBoy
-Abyss
-Kamala (Did Not Sign)
-Al Snow
-Traci Brooks
-Billy Kidman
-One Man Gang
-Steve Corino
-Lance Hoyt
-Sandman
-Greg Valentine
-Brutus Beefcake
-Gail Kim
-Scott Norton
-April Hunter
-The Steiner Brothers
-Powers of Pain
-DDP
-Blue Meanie
-Virgil
-Bill Goldberg
-Christian
-Roddy Piper
-Steve Williams
-Nick Bockwinkle
-Harley Race
-Ted Dibiase
-Nikolai Volkoff
-Jimmy Snuka
-Ultimo Dragon
-The GodFather
-Molly Holly
-BabyDoll
-Rikishi
-The Tonga Kid
-Orlando Jordan
-Eric Bischoff
-Steve Austin
-Cryme Tyme
-Vince Russo
-Chyna
-Road Warrior Animal
67 Total

The talent that did not show as of this writing (10-22-07)
-Dan Severn
-Jim Neidhart
-Jerry Sags
-Eugene
-Kevin Sullivan
-Mil Mascaras
-Test
-Buddy Rose
-Missy Hyatt
-Jasmine St. Clair
-Kurt Angle
-Sid Vicious
-Scott Hall
-Kevin Nash
-Marty Jannety
-Rocky Johnson
16 Total

Just wanted to update my prior post and let everybody know Steve Austin, Crime Time, Road Warrior Animal, Chyna, and Vince Russo all appeared.

Let me be the first to say, I have had a really good time.  I have made the best out of my situation here and so far I am walking away with over a 100 autos and 50 plus pictures with the wrestlers.  The wrestlers that have show have been incredible and have been very good to the fans.

Before I end this post, I just want to say that over the past few years, I have made the trek to New Jersey for Legends of the Ring and to Charlotte for the NWA Fan Fest.  I will be the first to say I enjoyed both, but believe me when I say, neither show was without its problems and neither was perfect by any means.  However, I gave each promoter a fair chance before criticizing either.

Thanks for the report!  Even with some of the no shows, it looks like an overall strong turn out and sounds like a good time.

What other business besides wrestling has customers who feel this way? Sometimes we do get (or more accurately don't get) what we deserve. Not flaming you man don't take it wrong, just pointing out how wrestling fans in general can be sometimes.

sources: PWInsider.com, www.f4wonline.com

-- The primary promoter of the WrestleFanFest convention held at the Cow Palace in San Francisco this weekend, Chris Salsbury, fled away from the hotel everyone was staying at due to a confrontation with Scott Steiner. At one point, Salbury locked himself in his room. Salsbury has been hard to get an audience with all weekend according to numerous people who have had business dealings with him. At the moment, no one knows where he is and if he'll pop up again. Furthermore, there's concern about the checks he gave a number of the talents not clearing.

-- Today is the third and final day of the WrestleFanFest convention. Steve Austin is supposed to be at the event. By all accounts, he was paid in advance and is already in San Francisco. They're also holding a Ring of Honor event at the Cow Palace later today. Unless they are prevented from running the show by the venue for some unforeseen reason out of their control, there will be a ROH show in the Cow Palace today. Upon their arrival in San Francisco, ROH officials met with the Cow Palace people to make sure they would be able to run the event.

-- Even though approximately 100 wrestling talents were advertised to appear at this convention, this thing only drew about 200 to 300 people on Friday.

"a general sense of disorganization"... seems to be a common denominator when these events go bad.

Glad you're having a good time, David.

Unfortunately, the "attitude" you speak of isn't limited to wrestling conventions. I've seen this same "hope they fail" attitude for years in indy wrestling. Some folks just thrive on the failure of others. Sad.

Absolutely one of the best conventions I ever attended. I had a great time meeting Muta, Goldberg, Austin, Bishoff and so many more of the wrestlers that attended. That with being in the world famous Cow Palace just added to the fun.

With all the negative surrounding the 2007 WrestleFanFest, meeting the Great Muta was my highlight.  I know the promoter has taken his fair share of criticism and rightfully so, but when it comes to Muta, Chris kept his word to Ray and myself.  Not only did he keep his word, Ray and I both got to have a private signing with Muta.  It was an experience I will never forget.  You asked for photos of Muta, here are three:

curious to hear from someone who was there..what was the turnout? How many vendors were there, and did they seem to be busy?

Went back and forth on weather to vend at that show or not, and decided not to..curious if that was the right move..

You made the right choice by not vending.  The only vendor that seemed to do well was the highspots.com booth, the rest looked battered and shell shocked by there not being anyone there.  Here's my pics...

http://www.flickr.com/gp/11833783@N08/z7Efq9

And my report...

Well we went to WrestleFanFest and I have to tell you, it was a once in a lifetime experience. For good and bad reasons. I don''t feel like doing a whole day by day report but I'll talk over some highlights.

I, of course, had inklings things may wind up as they did, but I did come away with a positive experience and for that I there's only one group of individuals that get the credit - The Talent.

I am VERY relieved that I only purchased the $199 pass as opposed to one of the higher passes. I also purchased the $75 front of line pass. This is where my money was wasted. No one honored them. I asked how they were to work and was told, just go to the front of any line and say you have a front of the line pass. Yeah, great idea except the WFF Staff member that was supposed to be at the front of every line wasn't there. I pointed this out and was told, just tell the people (the fans) at the front of the line that you've got a pass. Yeah. Right. Have you ever met a wrestling fan? They all act as if they are wrestlers. You try telling them that you're gonna just step in front of them. See how far that goes.

I also purchased passes for Austin, Piper, and Animal. I was able to get sigs from all of them, so I truly believe I got my money's worth except for the $75 Front of Line pass. I FEEL for the people who spent any more on tickets because I barely feel I got my money's worth for what I paid I can imagine what others feel. And I only came up from Southern California and my parents live in SF, so my travel costs were minimal.

I got to the host hotel to pick up my stuff and that seemed to go smoothly. There were some exchanges that needed to be made and they were made and everything was fine. Then I got to the Cow Palace around 2:30pm on Friday. The doors were supposed to open at 3pm (2PM for earlier pass holders). Anyway, the parking lot, empty. I got a spot right up by the door. There was only a small handful people in a line at the doors. Well, it WAS a Friday at 3PM, surely the weekend crowds would pick up right? No, it never really did.

On Friday there was a general sense of confusion. The talent, the fans, security at the Palace, no one seemed to know what was going on. But I was able to get a lot of signatures on Friday, starting with Mean Gene who was HILARIOUS. All the talent on Friday was warm and welcoming. There seemed to be a sense of "Okay, this is small, but it MIGHT be good." While talking to Bill Edie and Barry Darsow they were steamed because apparently they had arrived to the arena around 3pm and sat in a back room waiting to be taken out to the tables and they never were. They eventually just wandered out and picked a table and sat down. The only thing I regret about Friday is that, though I talked to Bill Edie and Barry Darsow and got signatures (especially Bill's on my MOC LJN ax figure) I didn't get pictures because they said they'd be back tomorrow in full make-up. They didn't return, so I didn't get that shot.

The Friday night card at the Malice in the Palace was great. I know none of the advertised matches took place. But the show was great. Especially great when you consider that the entire roster wrestled KNOWING they weren't going to get paid. Yes, it was a nostalgia show, but it brought back some great memories. Oh and I'm now the biggest mark for Sexy Chino. Who? He's the Asian Guy from the battle royal.

Saturday was spent getting more signatures, but my noon on Saturday, I had almost everyone's. One moment that will stand out is in the early hours of Saturday, Harley Race came into the venue and stood there looking around as to where to go. No one was with him to tell him where to sit to sign. That's a shame. With a legend like that, you wait on them hand and foot. Nick Bockwinkle was at the CAC booth and was a pleasure to meet.

Piper arrived earlier than expected and started signing earlier than expected. Piper is awesome. He talked to everyone and he REALLY talked to you. I have read reports saying that Austin spent time with each person, he did (and he was great) but he's NOT Piper. I feel I got my $50 (and probably part of that wasted $75) with Piper. He's just amazing. He cares about the fans and it shows. He hugged people, he kissed people, he didn't let the staff rush anyone through the line. Want two pics with him, fine. He's truly a legend.

After Piper's autograph I was headed back to the main hall where I bumped into Virgil. Virgil asked if I was headed back to the hotel and if I could give him a ride. I was this close to saying, "Sure, not a problem. $20." Instead I just told him I had to ask my pal i came with and if he was ready to go we would. I walked back into the Vendor area and saw that DiBiase and Volkoff and Koko were signing so I forgot about Virgil and went to get more sigs.

Sunday was dead as were the other days, got a few more sigs and, of course, met Austin. The vendors, talent and fans were burnt out.

I said this several times to my buddy and I believe it to be true: My experience would not have been as great if there had been the 20,000 people there. On Sunday morning, my buddy and I spent about 10 mins talking to Slick. Yeah we were talking about how the event had gone wrong but, we stood with Slick for 10 mins! We had similar experiences with other talent, which brings me back around to the talent. Through it all, the talent sucked it up for the fans and made it a great time.

Really, by Sunday, The Talent and the Fans were in the same boat. The talent wasn't getting paid, we paid for stuff we didn't get. Together we soldiered through and made it something we'll talk about for a long time.

We stayed for Ring of Honor. I will catch no end of hell for saying this, but I was not impressed. The opening few matches were FANTASTIC! Chris Hero vs. Human Tornado - Awesome. Roderick Strong vs. Claudio Castagnoli - Great. But then after that there was just no "stories" in the matches. Just random pairings that meant nothing. For the corwd in attendance they should have done a little back story or made it clear (as in the Tornado/Hero match) what the history was. And yeah, I'm gonna say it, Danielson vs. Aries - I was bored out of my skull. Yeah, they can do fun holds. Yawn. We left before the main event.

Overall I can say that I had a great time. I got almost everything I paid for. I got some one on one time with legends. I got all my LJNs signed. I had a great time and that's all thanks to the talent, who stood above the hassles and gave the fans what they came for even when there wasn't much in it (money wise) for them.

A show like this is bad for fans, because it just burns a market. The venue, the hotel, and every other business connected to this will prob never want anything to do w/ pro wrestling again. Also, other promoters will be weary of trying another pro wrestling themed event after seeing the abortion this became. Good business is what's good for the sport, good for fans, good for everyone.

Sounds as if Piper would be a perfect fit for this coming years FF in Charlotte? He's definately someone we'd all like to meet and say hello to. Probably won't happen though, but hey, Ricky Morton is available? Roll Eyes

Piper isn't affordable. If everyone was willing to pay for a VIP package to get autographs/meet him, then maybe.. but he's in the price-range of 5-10 regular guests.. He gets booked at a ton of non-wrestling cons (Comic book, horror, pop culture) so he isn't about to run out of the house for under a large sum of $$...

The amount of money piper is asking for isnt all that much

yes it would pay for 4-5 common guests
but the amount it would bring back in sales

I paid out the a$$ for Bret Hart (almost double what piper wants)  to keep him as an exclusive to the NY area Summerslam weekend. It was a risky experiment but it MORE then paid off.

I would love to book him for an event but have never been able to match schedules with his.  I am a big Mark for Piper and I would do it for me.

If you read my show formula you will see it doesnt hurt to book 1 big money Name on the show. But in that case the rest of the lineup has to be balanced out accordingly

as a promoter, you dont think Piper's been over done? I see piper prob 6-10 times a year at various comic book, horror and sci-fi cons, many of them in the Northeast.

Brett Hart is someone who never does conventions of any sort, so i can see him paying off huge.  Piper is kinda like Jericho and George Steel tho, in that he's done a ton of these things in the past.

While on the topic of guests..and im sure it wouldnt draw huge crowds, but the only person in the biz i wanna meet and havent seen at any sort of event is Michael PS Hayes. Now, I know he works for the fed, but so does Ron Simmions, Al Snow, Lawler, etc all work for the fed and do signings.. curious why he's never at these things...

Everything you've said is right on! The whole "so and so wont do it, unless he gets X amount" is somewhat of a myth at times. You'd be surprised at how little some guys who many think might command big dollars, do it for? I saw once where someone brought Sting in for $5,000, you read that right. There was only a 2-3 hr wait to meet him, and MANY did not go away upset. Sure Sting could command: Hogan/Austin/Goldberg like $$$? Yes, certain guys do command alot, but there's always someone willing to pay it. I agree with you too about Piper more than making your cash back, b/c I for one believe he'd make the person who brought him in, quite a good return.

Brett has done Quite a bit before in the area

actually the same if not more then Piper.

Piper does alot of the mulitmedia events  as Bret Hart only does the wrestling events.

Brets done WAY more fanfests then Piper

Sting isnt into doing signings much anymore he wont even do it at a courtesy for his Employer TNA who is overpaying him to begin with..

I was never a big Sting Fan never got what was so special about him?

I am really hoping for Piper next year myself. He does do alot of horror/comic cons, but it would be perfect to have him in Charlotte. As far as cost, how about we drop 4 or 5 guys who have been at every fan fest already and that will pay for Piper?
