WWC MAYGUEZ, P.R. ARENA SHOW 10/23/77
Oct 23rd, 2007, 9:54pm

WORLD WRESTLING COUNCIL
THE SPORTS PALACE
MAYAGUEZ, PUERTO RICO
OCTOBER 23, 1977 7 PM
REFEREE: TOMAS MARIN

All matches are governed and sanctioned by the National Wrestling Alliance.

--Puerto Rican national anthem

Match 1-

PEDRO EL GRANDE defeats GEORGE GAISER with a sunset flip from the top rope.

Time: 9:27

Match 2-

THE GUARDIAN defeats THE U.S. PATRIOT with a pile driver.

Time: 7:28

Match 3-

PEPPER GOMEZ defeats INVADER III.

Both wrestlers spend lengthy periods working on weakening specific body areas. Invader III works on Gomez’s back with half and full Boston crabs. Gomez targets the masked man’s ribs with knee drops and an abdominal scissors. Gomez wins the match by clamping on an abdominal stretch.

Time: 14:26

Match 4-

ROBERTO SOTO/ EL RAYO/ KING TONGA defeat SUPER MEDICO/ THE INFERNOS w/ J.C. DYKES

The Infernos and Medico work together like a well oiled machine. They isolate El Rayo in their corner, working on his right shoulder Rayo manages to tag in Soto after Inferno II misses a clothesline. Soto snaps off a neck breaker on Inferno I. He and Tonga work on the neck.

The end of the match comes when Rayo makes a blind tag to Tonga. Medico does not see it and goes to the top rope for a missile dropkick. Tonga lands a savate kick that turns Medico a complete flip. Soto and Rayo block off The Infernos and Tonga makes the lateral press for the pin.

Time: 19:33

Match 5-

CARLOS COLON defeats VICTOR JOVICA w/ J.C. DYKES

The brass knucks that seem to be the trademark of Victor Jovica lately come out midway in this match. Since Jovica has already weakened Colon with some brutal nerve holds, the punches are especially effective. Colon is opened up but a quick belly-to-belly suplex throws the knucks on the mat. Dykes is arguing with Marin and does not see Colon let loose with the foreign object.

The match ends when Jovica tries to Irish whip Colon into the opposite corner. Dykes is in the corner waiting with a shoe. Colon reverses and Dykes hits Jovica on accident. Jovica stumbles into a fisherman’s suplex and is pinned by Colon.

Match 6-

PUERTO RICAN HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH
INVADER I defeats HERCULES AYALA by DQ

This match is an old fashioned donnybrook from the opening bell. Ayala and Invader spend the first few minutes slapping each other across the chest. The match spills out to the floor. Marin uses discretion in trying to get the match back in the ring. He also lets both wrestlers bend and break the rules.

A lead pipe finds Ayala’s nether regions and the crowd almost riots on the Invader’s head. He poles Ayala and the masked star rolls the champ into the ring. Invader I puts the champ in position for a shoulder breaker. Ayala shifts his weight and lands behind Invader I. Ayala shoves Invader I through the ropes.

Invader hits his head on the railing and Ayala follows up by dropping a double–axe handle from the apron.  Marin starts the count and Ayala rolls under the ropes. Ayala grabs a chair and slides it in the ring. He poles Invader I and takes him into the ring. Despite the warnings of the referee, Ayala drops Invader I on the chair with a pile driver.

The bell rings and Ayala is DQ’ed.

Time: 25:55.

Match 7-

THE SAMOAN KINGS w/ MARK MANSON defeat GIL HAYES/ ROCK RIDDLE

The Kings take on another rule breaking team in Hayes and Riddle. Early in the match,
Hayes taunt and aggravate Afi and Curtis by spending more time in the crowd with the ladies than in the ring with the tag champs. Hayes gives several women money after they kiss him.

Curtis goes out into the crowd and drives Hayes’ head into several of the seats. Afi hits a power slam on Riddle in the ring. Hayes barely gets back in the ring to break the count. The match, then, gets serious as The Kings take control on Riddle. The champs go in for the back and score several pin falls. Hayes bails Riddle out by breaking several pins up. The interference allows Riddle to land a karate thrust to Afi’s throat.

It looks like a sure victory for Hayes and Riddle. In fact, the Blond Bombers actually get a three count after Hayes hits a fist drop from the top rope, aided by the money clip being in his hand. As Hayes and Riddle go for the belts, Manson is complaining.

Roberto Soto comes out and tells Marin that the money clip is in Hayes’ boot. When the referee finds it, he re-starts the match. Afi sneaks in and rolls up Riddle for a three count. Hayes and Riddle are left screaming for Soto as The Kings sulk to the back.

I like the Samoan Kings. It's a good moniker. I was glad to see former SF star, Pepper Gomez, get the win. Everytime I see El Rayo, I think of "El Rey" from Mucha Lucha. I'm sorry, I teach elementary school.  Smiley

Great things continuing in P.R.  Colon looks great.  Ayala with a tough loss.  Samoan Kings continue to impress.  Great stuff in WWC.

Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience!

Continued great work with Riddle and Hayes. Soto may have gone from the frying pan to the fire. Now not only do the Soto's have problems with Riddle/Hayes but I can't imagine that King Curtis is too happy about Roberto sticking his nose into the Kings business regardless of the outcome.
