Greatest Tag Team
Nov 5th, 2007, 10:33am

This one would probably also fit in the 74-86 forum, but who is the greatest tag team from the Jim Crockett era?  I know the obvious choice is the Road Warriors, but I think as far as technical wrestling goes as well as drawing tremendous heat I have to say Tully and Arn with the Lane/Eaton Midnight Express a close second.  Comments?

My picks...of course, I loved all of these teams...hard to really put in order. But, Tully and Arn and the Andersons just seemed to me to be a cut above everyone.

1. Tie between Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson & Ole and Gene Anderson
2. Midnight Express (Eaton and Condrey)
3. Rock-n-Roll Express
4. Road Warriors
5. Ivan and Nikita Koloff
6. Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood
7. Sgt. Slaughter and Don Kernodle
8. Ric Flair and Greg Valentine
9. Paul Jones and Ricky Steamboat
10. Paul Jones and Wahoo McDaniel

Don't forget about the Fabulous Freebirds (any combination)! They were pretty good.

I'm not saying that the Freebirds were THE greatest, I just think they should considered.  Also, the Rock-n-Roll Express, any combination of the 4 Horsemen, the Russians (Ivan and Nikita), and the Midnight Express.

If you take both teams in their prime, I think it is a tie between the Steiners and Doom.  Simmons and Reed just gelled so well together and the Steiners were just so physical with a knowledgeable wrestling accumen.

In my humble opinion the  Minnesota Wrecking Crew consisting of Gene and Ole Anderson was the greatest wrestling tag team ever. During their reign of terror they held the tag team championship belts 8 times.

In keeping with the time frame of this specific forum (1987 and Beyond) hands down the best team of this time was the Eaton/Lane version of The Midnight Express

IMO Midnight Express (Eaton & Condrey or Lane with Cornette).  Simply put, the MX made the faces look great in the highest profile tag team feuds in that time frame.  They headlined the Night of the Skywalkers with the Roadies, and through 2 full tours did scaffold matches with Rock-n-Roll and the Fantastics.  They had their program with the James Boys, Garvin and Windham--and, as mentioned in an earlier thread, carried the Southern Boys to a solid match on PPV.  They were the team that the promotion, when in a spot, put the World Tag Team Championship on even though they were already the US Tag Team Champions.  They provided the steam when they were bad and were the technical spectacle when they had their face run against The Horsemen, and even the Original MX.  As an aside, Tommy Rogers told me that the Bobby Eaton is the best worker he ever wrestled--better than even Flair.

As a teenager I liked the Road Warriors, but today, the things that were appealing then are kind of a sign of bad work today.  They looked like they were knocking the sh*t out of people on TV and doing stuff that was really dangerous--problem was they were and it was.  They were never workers of the caliber of the MX.  I mean going by the tag team book, the Roadies were the top team at the time, but IMO the book is a bit too high on how guys were booked to win or lose and the impact they had on the game just in their style/look.

This is my first post on the Fanfest Forum. I look forward to contributing as time goes on and commenting on one of my favorite pastimes (other than college basketball lol).  Grin

I always been quite the fan of both Tully and Arn's work as well as the crisp team work of The Midnight Express combination of Eaton and Lane. I both the NWA and the WWF at the time both had some phenomenal tag teams, but, in my opinion, I think the NWA better personified ability more than the WWF, although the Hart Foundation, the Bulldogs and Valentine and Beefcake provided some thrilling matches between each other.
