Keeping within the time span of 1987 and beyond, I believe the greatest world champion, as far as traveling all over the world and taking on all over the top talent, is, in my opinion, Nature Boy Ric Flair. To me, Flair possessed the rare ability to make his opponent, regardless of who it was, look like a top talent, even if he wasn't and make him look like a huge threat and capable of unseating the champion. If, by chance, one were to go before 1987 and look and see who were the greatest champions during previous eras, I think, in my opinion, that would pose a more difficult problem. Athletes such as Harley Race, Jack Bricso, Lou Thesz and others all were top talent and made the world title seem as prestigious as it could possibly be. I have read that Race defended the title as often as six days a week, which is quite the feat, bascially unheard of today. Brisco held the title on several occassions and held it for over a year at a time, which is quite the feat as well. Thesz was a skilled "hooker," tried to unify all of the world chamopnships and helped a great deal in popularizing wrestling in Japan with his bouts against Rikidōzan. But again, to help keep this discussion within the timelines of this thread, in my opinion, Flair would be my choice as the greatest world champion of the modern era.
