In 1987, Crockett should have put the title on....
May 2nd, 2008, 11:45pm  
either Nikita Koloff, Barry Windham, or Jimmy Garvin.
 
These 3 at the time were the only credible ones (excluding Dusty Rhodes) at beating Flair. Anyway, these wrestlers would have made a better two month champion than Ronnie Garvin.

Still, it would have made Flair a more credible champion at the time,Most people who beat Flair for the title in those days should have known theri reign would be short anyway.

Sadly, the drawback with the Cockett-Duthy booking was that they trusted no one outside Flair/Duthy to be "the man". They waited way to long to pull the trigger on Magnum till the day of his accident, they certainly missed the boat on Luger who was tearing it up in the ring at this point in his career, and they almost missed the boat with Sting, and then he got injured when he did get his shot to shine. As much as I love the Nature Boy (I think he is the greatest and most influential North American worker EVER) I think he was way too protected by the Crockett-Duthy booking and did little to create top babyfaces in the mid to late 80's. Its sort of similar to the way the E booked Cena in 2007 and Triple H in 2003-05.

I didn't really have a problem with Garvin as champion per se, although I thought he was kinda small, but they totally made him look weak on TV by not having him defend the title again until Starrcade (he did wrestle on house shows, but those were never acknowledged). It made him appear as if he wasn't interested in being a fighting champion. Even if Flair had to cheat his heiny off or have the Horsemen interfere to save him, he still wrestled everybody who came along. In the storyline, the NWA just allowed Garvin to sit on the belt like he was waiting for it to hatch. Had they made him look different, it probably wouldn't have been so bad. I think Barry would've been a better choice for champion, but it didn't really matter who you plugged into that role. If that was the way it was going to be booked from the beginning (not the fact that I knew I was going to lose the belt back to Flair before I won it, but that they were going to make me out to be a lameduck in the process), I wouldn't have done it either.

I always thought Nikita should have had the belt at least once in the 1985-87 period. Not doing so made the whole on and off again feud between the two pointless.
 
I'll go one step further regarding the Garvin comments....
 
I think the Garvin reign(and how it was handled) was the beginning of the end for NWA/WCW. Yeah, it survived for more than a decade afterwards, but quite a few people stopped taking the organization seriously. I was only about 12 at the time, and even I started to sour on the NWA.
 
Alot of the wrestling "purists" (including people like my grandpa) started walking away.

Not sure if this was true, but at the time I remember reading that one of the main reasons the title switched in the first place was that Flair wanted to take a vacation in the Caribbean.  If that's true then I guess I could understand guys turning down winning the title just to sit on it and lose it two months later. If Luger had joined the Horsemen a year earlier, it would have been a cool way to turn him babyface by having him beat Flair for the title. Maybe he would've had the 6 month reign that Sting had in 1990.  
 
You could've even had the Windham turn incorporated into that situation with jealousy of his 'best friend' building to Windham joining the Horsemen and causing Luger to drop the title to Flair.
 
As great as the 1989 Flair-Steamboat feud was, does anyone else out there wish Stemaboat's reign lasted a little longer?  I always felt Flair's 6th title win was a little flat, especially since it moved right into the feud with Funk.  
 
Who knows...just my opinion.

I've always felt this way.  Despite how great the match was, the immediate angle almost makes you forget what you just saw and kind of spoils it for me.  I always preferred the New Orleans 2/3 falls match myself.  
 
As for the topic, all things considered I think Garvin was the best choice at the time. Nikita had the TV title, Barry had the Western States title, Ron didn't have much of anything going on.  
Although in my opinion I thought it made Jimmy Garvin look a little second banana to Ron, coming off the Dream Date angle/feud that summer.  
 
Also what made his reign not so memorable for me is that when they threw out the no defense stipulation, you just KNEW Flair was going to win at Starrcade, and it killed any momentum going in to the match, which is a shame because the match was great.

I always thought Nikita would have make a great World Champion. Sadly, we'll never know.

I'd love to have seen Arn or Tully get a run wuith the big belt around this time, turning Flair face

No reign was going to be very long during that era.  Just like the WWF when Hogan had the belt, you knew it wouldn't be long before it was back on Flair.  It was great to tune in and root for the faces against Flair, but there never was a payoff

Tully Blanchard would've been a great choice, regardless of his Horsemen affiliation. Stables break up, get back together, break up again and so on. It would've made for an interesting angle and had the other Horsemen choose sides. Regardless of his size, Tully was hot in the NWA at the time and was a solid wrestler. He had that world champ look and could really work the crowd. A fued with he and Ric would've been classic battling over the NWA World Title.  
 
I respected Ron Garvin alot but that title reign of his was beyond lame. After he lost, he never was a factor again in his career.
