Swede breaks Pete's ring.......again
Jul 27th, 2008, 11:08am

Roanoke promoter, Pete Apostolou, used a good looking , large wrestling  ring . The only drawback was it had posts made of wood instead of steel. If the action got too wild, the posts were prone to break, which happened twice that I can remember on the live broadcast from WDBJ 7 Roanoke,VA  in the sixties. Swede Hanson was involved in one of those incidents. Below is a story of Swede breaking the ring again in Danville, Virginia, which was a town that Pete Apostolou promoted in the sixties and seventies.

October 27, 1966 City Armory, Danville, Virginia

Tag Team Bout Ruled No Contest After Wild Finish

Angelo Martinelli won a one- fall decision over Jesse James here last night in the opener of a four bout professional wrestling card at the City Armory. Martinelli scored his pin after 8:34 of action.

Paul DeMarco also scored a pin against Jim Osborne in the second one fall contest. DeMarco required 20:34 before gaining the verdict.

In the first of two tag team bouts, Luther Lindsey and Jesse James scored over Ike Eakins and Corsica Jean. Eakins won the first fall over James in 11:17. However James bounced back with a pin against Eakins. The final and deciding fall went to Luther Lindsey over Corsica Jean in a fast 2:22. (Jesse James was subbing for George "Catalina" Drake who had been injured in a previous match.)

The featured tag team bout was ruled no contest after Rip Hawk and Swede Hanson had battled the Masked Red Demons to a standoff at one fall each. First one of the Masked Red Demons pinned Rip Hawk in 11:45. Hanson made it all even with a pin against the other Demon in a quick 2:22. Both of the Demons grabbed Hanson and tossed him against the ropes. When he bounced off, he (Hanson) hit his head on one of the ring posts and was knocked out for several minutes. When Hanson was revived, he went at everyone he could find and it took several minutes before he could be restrained.

With the ring knocked down, the referee declared the bout a no contest.

Follow-up: It was reported in the paper the following week that the broken ring had been repaired for the upcoming matches at the Armory.
