I am the High Chief SITTING STILL, a/k/a MCP, a/k/a Michael Hayden Elliott I'm 27 years old from Oxford, England....now residing in London....and a staunch Libertarian This will be my 4th Fanfest since first attending in 2005, & something like my eleventh U.S wrestling trip in the last 4 years. My first exposure to wrestling was at the age of 5 when my older brother located old Championship Wrestling from Georgia and later Continental (Alabama) tapes being run in the early hours of Monday morning on a local TV channel, and started taping them each week - and instantly I was hooked for life. The GA tapes being shown were from the period when Ole's post-Black Saturday GA show had some kind of promotional deal with Memphis, as it was Gordon Solie hosting studio wrestling, but with promo videos from Memphis stars w/Mid South Coliseum footage (Lawler, Hart's first family with Bundy) who presumably were scheduled to come in at some point. Not long after I came across NWA Pro & Worldwide on an old pan-European cable sports channel called Screensport, right at the height of the classic Dusty/Horseman/MX/Rock N Roll/Roadwarriors period. The footage appeared to be several months behind as I recall weeks of Bash '87 era shows being shown around Christmas '87 (they could get away with this stuff in the pre-internet days) Of course, this all changed everything....it was - and remains to be - like something from another planet....the crazy heat! The violent & bloody angles! The crazed emotion in Dusty & Flair promos....it had this weird vibe to it, with all these TV tapings from weird Southern towns I'd never heard of....what I'd later come to know as that regional 'Southern wrasslin' feel. This, along with a childhood exposure to early R.E.M, and my Mother's Elvis collection, started what has become a lifelong obsession with the American South & its history....including, especially, its food! Also, through the Continental footage I came across AUSTIN IDOL, who just blew me away at a very young age....and Ilook forward to meeting this year in Charlotte Of course, around this time WWF Wrestling Challenge took over the Monday block previously held by the Georgia & Alabama tapes, and for the reminder of my childhood I was happily caught up in the WWF hype machine, as NWA / WCW footage was only sporadically available until the early-mid '90s, by which point it wasn't the same at all.... Of course, what really ignited my lifelong obsession for classic Mid Atlantic wrestling, and Southern wrestling in general....was finding copies of the Lords Of The Ring & Bash '85 video tapes in my Uncle's video store in London. This would've been about 1990. The footage of Starrcade '83 & the World Class Parade Of Champions with the Flair/Kerry title change was just mind-blowing, and it was like forgotten world....the footage was so dated, even just 7-8 years after....culture & production values etc had moved on so much. But that all added to this special 'cosmic' vibe that NWA wrestling from this era had....and I continue to be obsessed by it to this day. The Mid Atlantic Gateway really is exceptional in fostering these interests, and my natural inclination towards the wrestling history of the region, and it was through my being a regular visitor to the Gateway site that I came across Greg Price's Fanfest, which I was privileged enough to first attend in 2005, in an attempt to 'peel back the curtain' on a part of culture which has always been a great mystery and interest to me, and I've made some great lifelong friends & had some of the best times ever, as well as getting to meet some great legends. The Saturday matches in 2007 with the Midnights / RnR match are the closest I've ever come to experiencing what I call the 'vibe', that crazy NC wrestling experience that appears to be sadly lost 25 years in the ether, and which has drawn so much of us to gather in Charlotte for another year. And for 4 days this August 'the vibe' will come alive again.... Anyways - I'm looking to 'get back in the game' this year after the torture of missing FLAIR, HAYES & JIMMY GARVIN last year due to some late arising work commitments made me unable to attend....so come over and say high, and we'll get some BBQ or PRICE'S FRIED CHICKEN~!
