Worldwide memories
Mar 28th, 2009, 11:12pm

I recently created a new section on my History of WWE site for WCW Worldwide results and wanted to touch base and see what your favorite memories were of the program.

Not sure when it started (82? It was certainly around by 83) and I think it was the very last telecast from WCW, airing the weekend after the Nitro simulcast.

My results - for the time being, at least - will begin with 1988. Given time, I might go back further.

It began airing in the '70s. It was initially called Wide World Wrestling before they switched it to World Wide to supposedly prevent confusion with Wide World of Sports.

One of my earliest memories from the show was was when I first started watching JCP in 1987. Hiro Matsuda choked out Johnny Weaver and caused him to bleed from the mouth. It was part of the build-up to the Luger-Dusty match at Starrcade '87. Weaver had taught Dusty the "Weaverlock" and was going to be the "keeper of the key" for the cage.

Other memories include seeing some matches from Bash '87 like Flair beating Jimmy Garvin in the cage to get his dream date with Precious and the match where Ronnie Garvin won the title from Flair, which took up the whole hour.

I also enjoyed some of the stuff WCW was doing on the show before they signed Hogan in 1994. They had "May Mayhem" month where they had a specially stipulated dream match every week like Rude vs. Sting in an I Quit match and Austin vs. Johnny B. Badd in a Tuxedo match, and they also had the "Marquis of Queensbury" series between Flair and Regal.

My introduction to Wide World Wrestling was in the mid-70s with Ed Capral as host.

You know how you remember where you were when you first heard that Elvis died? I had one of those moments with Ed Capral in mid-December 1975.

If I'm not mistaken, it was on this show that in a seemingly impromptu fashion, Mr. Capral announced he'd just received a phone call and that he'd been told Terry Funk had just defeated Jack Brisco in Miami for the world championship. As an 11-year-old kid, a wrestling fanatic, that was just so intriguing.

Capral had this Walter Cronkite-like seriousness about himself and his way of communicating the message. Classic.

Even though the TV show aired the following weekend, I remember doing the math and confirming that the 10th WAS on Wednesday, the same day of the Wide World tapings.

That's a date and a story that I'll remember forever.

My first vivid memory was tuning into the old World Wide Saturday night show (11:30 pm) to hear Bob Caudle announce the tragic accident that befell Magnum T.A.  I had just started watching wrestling in the weeks prior, and had seen Magnum's matches with Nikita, Flair, and Tully, and was hooked for life. When Magnum got hurt, it was so shocking.... Miss the old NWA days.

My first memory of World Wide Wrestling was on a Saturday night. I was living in Greer, SC at the time and we were watching it on WLOS TV 13 out of Asheville. What I vividly remember was a hard hitting clip of a match between Johnny Valentine and Wahoo McDaniel. You could hear the chops and punches through the tv set. I am not sure if it was an impromptu match on World Wide, a clip from Mid Atlantic Wrestling or just a clip from another week. I think a short video is out on Youtube of the match. Man, were those great days. I used to beg to be able to stay up late on Saturday nights to watch it. I think WLOS showed it at 11pm.

I think the Youtube clip you have reference to is from the old WGHP channel 8 studio from 1974 It's also on the Mid Atlantic Gateway site as well

My first experience with NWA was in 1986 while I was bbsitting....
The Marks had me looking after their 2 daughters most weekends as they went out to fmaily events etc...
After the kids were asleep, I disovered that the local french tv channel (canal 10) had the NWA on...Recounts and clips and matches from the previous weeks...

I was entralled as I saw RocknRoll Express vs Horsemen and then the Skywalkers match unfold on my tv set... I didnt get Solie, Caudle or Ross  but some french dubbed play by play... Imagine Ric Flair, Tully , Ole, Windham and Arn all spekaing their minds (Flair inevitably freakin out) all dubbed in french !!!

Needless to say I was hooked....

World Wide Wrestling has a special place in my heart as it was aired at 11:30pm Saturday nights on our local CBS affiliate WTVR, and in my younger years I would painfully sit through the 11:00 news (which seemed to lag on forever) waiting for the show to start.

Hands down one thing that sticks out the most for me was in April or May of 86 between Tully Blanchard and Ron Garvin for the National Heavyweight Title.  This was the follow up to Tully, Arn and JJ injuring Garvin's right hand.  The match and angle lasted the entire show, and it's one of the best I've seen and a sentimental favorite of mine.

God I have real good memories of the old WCW WorldWide days. I remember watching that show on KTBS Channel 3 here in Shreveport, Louisiana. WorldWide use too come on after the American Gladiators at 1:00 on Saturday afternoon. I also remember while watching WorldWide, I use to wrestle with a old green pillow while the show was playing on tv in the background, boy my grandmother would kick my a$$ if she heard me wrestling with the pillow cry

Boy those were the day's
