There's a mistake in the thread too the title says WCW mistakes The situation was in 86 it was still the NWA
Jeff
not to start an argument over another topic, but it was NOT the NWA. it was Jim Crockett Promotions. this is one of those things that irritates the crap out of me when people refer to this era as "the NWA". the sanctioning body was the NWA (in theory), but the promotion WAS NOT "the NWA", it was Jim Crockett Promotions, or in this case it could POSSIBLY be referred to as WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING as that was the name of the TV show on WTBS at the time. but this is one of those things that you can beat people over the head with with a sledgehammer, and they don't get it.
not coming down on you Jeff, i wouldn't do that. just bringing up a point for clarification purposes with my bias touch on the subject. my apologies if i offend.
granted, it wasn't WCW either. good catch.
Actually - the title of the thread is fine: the subject is indeed the Oct 18th 1986 broadcast of World Championship Wrestling on TBS....
Now as for the NWA thing....this promotion, in my view, WAS called NWA at this point....I don't mean it was the WHOLE ENTITY of the sanctioning body of the NWA (although it was the only significant member promotion at the time), that's a completely different thing. Jim Crockett Promotions was the name of the parent company (analogous to Titan Sports): they promoted wrestling cards and TV shows under the banner/brand names Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling, then later the NWA.
The TV shows were called:
NWA World Championship Wrestling
NWA World Wide Wrestling
NWA Pro Wrestling (can't remember if that had started at this time)
not JCP World Championship Wrestling....
They clearly used the acronym NWA as the blanket brand name for their product from the mid 80's until the Turner buyout, when the name was slowly phased out over the next 2 years in favour of the WCW name, just as Capitol Sports/Titan Sports use the name WW(W)F, and Southwest Sports used Big Time Wrestling the WCCW. Everyone referred to it as the NWA, the logo was all over the TV and promotional materials, and it was listed as such in TV listings. IIRC correctly this was pretty much the case going back to them getting the TBS tv in the summer of '85, although before that they appeared to use MACW, JCP and NWA interchangeably. Of course the MACW name was phased out locally by the end of '86....
Obviously this was chosen as you had to have the 3 letter acronym as your brand name when attempting to pass yourself off as a national company....
